The hanging scene in the military barracks was pretty heavy handed, even compared to the general exaggeration. Although I do find it interesting how season 1 connected race to the O.J. case (not that you couldn't of course.) And now season 2 expands on this case to highlight how homosexuality was treated even twenty years ago (the cops being wary about investigating, how they were treated in the military, the idea that many powerful people were closeted allowing Andrew to take advantage, etc.) It didn't seem like they could have stretched this out into nine episodes given what little detail we have, but they're doing a great job of creating a narrative, embellished as it may be.
