Devblog: Customization and Subfactions

quote:

Over 80 subfactions are available in total, with at least six per faction, so some are brand new to the universe, added to help flesh out our single-player campaigns.

Each is different, not only in the colour schemes of your ships, but some also bestow new admiral skills to choose from as well.

So if I'm reading that right then there's no fleet-painter, and your 'colour' (via your faction) also brings mechanical changes with it. Booo.

The first game was similar, and it was great for flavour.

iirc in the original game you had to pick a canon colour scheme, sure, but that scheme didn't effect the mechanics of your navy in any way, that's the part I'm booing specifically.

Having each little sub faction get various bonuses based on their theme is neat though. Something that I wished was in the first game was having Space Marines get different bonuses depending on what chapter you were using.

Yes and no. You could pick a fleet wide colour scheme that had no gameplay effect.
But there was also favours you could buy one out of four options as an upgrade on individual ships. The favours also had cosmetic effects. The Mechanicus favour for instance turned the ship red with bright green windows.

There was an option to turn off the cosmetic effect of a favour to prevent it from overriding the fleet wide scheme, but you couldn't have a whole fleet in mechanics colours without buying the mechanicus favour for every ship.

Yeah it's really minor in an otherwise amazing looking game but it's also a Warhammer game soooooo

I'm hoping they patch in a DoW2 style army fleet painter somewhere down the line.
BFG:A didn't have any ship painting aside from the favours for the longest time.

I've already preordered and am probably up for giving the beta a try, will report back if so. If anyone plays in GMT evenings and fancies doing some 2v2 for it then let me know.

I got the pre-order also since i had 25% off. I'm going to be focusing on doing skirmish vs the AI with all the different races then hopefully try a few MP matches.

Yeah I pre-ordered it a while back and have been looking forward to playing.

I wasn't that great in multilayer in the last game but there were enough equally terrible people that it balanced out.

What always cracked me up was the people getting super pissy about getting rammed to hell and back, when ramming and causing enemy ships to pinwheel through the cosmos was the best part of the game.

There used to be a glitch where the Big Red Button ability for Orks would stay stuck on, causing them to hurtle uncontrollably across the map while blaring a horn and it was probably the funniest glitch you could get.

The original game's MP was fun and unique enough that I preordered this one back in August. Definitely interested in seeing how hosed up this game's balance is what with 9 races and approximately 1,000 sub-factions!

12 different fleets and over 80 subfactions between them.

I was disappointed that they took skirmish progression away but I'm glad that you can field a full fleet from the get go. It would take me forever to have to grind through all 12 fleets.

Well, most of the subfactions are just skin changes. Only a small handful have any gameplay change.

I was hoping each one had a few bonuses here and there. I guess it would be hard to balance with so many, but would it have killed them to have one subfaction get better acceleration, one get slightly faster jump times, one faction get bonuses to macrobatteries, etc?

My greatest MP moment was fighting this MLG guy playing as chaos and he was microing like a champ until i rammed 1 LC into 2 of his cruisers causing them both to explode while my LC had brace for impact so it actually made it out haha. He was raging in chat about ramming being so dumb.

So, I've played the prologue and a few skirmishes.

Love the new UI and general gameplay changes. Most notably, stances are a wonderful change to the orders system, making Run Silent a continuous thing that simply confers no bonus during combat means it's far more viable.

The new objective system for skirmishes gives you a reason to move the battlefield around and not just fight a single decisive battle, which is great. Objective regions are probably too small now - Nova cannons do not scatter so you can just fire your entire stack of Novas into one and boom, dead battleship.

The new boarding/crew mechanics are much more interesting. Had a cruiser definitely on purpose get beat up, then scuttled it to knock out the shields of the entire enemy fleet, allowing a series of lightning strikes and nova cannons wipe out the rest.

Actually pretty sad to see the loss of progression in the multiplayer, solely because I actually enjoyed the lower point matches far more. Give me back my light cruiser on light cruiser match ups! :argh:

All in all, I'm very excited for the singleplayer and less excited for the multiplayer. Prologue was excellent fun - far better than the original's.

Lord Koth

Hilarious, already ran into a progression stopping bug. During the prologue/tutorial, the boarding torpedoes reduced that Hellbringer to a Drifting Hulk... which you can't actually do any boarding actions against, meaning doing the next objective "Complete a Boarding Action" is impossible. And there's no way to skip it as far as I can tell.

I'm actually kind of shocked that one is still in even the closed beta, given just how fast it comes up.

Beta was still downloading when I had to leave for work, so I'll have so wait all day to finally play :qq:

One thing I heard that was worrisome is that you can't customize upgrades on your ships anymore? I loved deciding what upgrades and abilities to give my fleet in the first game. That's a bummer if all the ships have fixed loadouts that you can't adjust.

You can still do that but it's more limited. You get to pick 2 active skills (plasma bomb, augur probe, that kind of thing) for your flagship (whatever you put into your list first). Then you get to pick two fleet upgrades that improves various aspect of your fleet. They can apply to only certain types of ship depending on the upgrade (escort only, battleship only, flagship only, etc).

I'm not too sure, since now everything's on a system where you've got a limited number of uses. Still, three nova cannon shots is a lot.

...On first impression, Chaos seems a bit too strong. Just a tad. Goddamn 18,000 base range weapons on a huge number of their ships, where most/all other fleets are seeing at most SOME 13,500 range weapons on larger ships. Also an upgrade, that states it applies to ALL your ships, with the stated effect of "whenever one of your ships is destroyed, it causes 1-2 crew hits, with normal chances of a boarding action crit, to ALL enemy ships within its identification range." Can you say Iconoclast spam, with the upgrade that increases their identification range to 13,500? Who incidentally provide great spotting and screening/meat shielding for your heavy ships, along with point capping, at the same time.

edit: In general, I'm also not particularly liking the removal of the ability to automate skills. Especially since Tindalos added even more this time around, along with pushing people toward larger fleets, the game is just super micro-managey at the moment.

They've made it much easier to group units and use the abilities whilst grouped though. While I did prefer automating, at least their usability is much greater, and they made a number of them into toggles rather than actives.

Anyone tried this with more than one monitor or 4k and have issues? The game fuckin hates my 4k primary monitor, with the cursor offset a couple inches of its actual position no matter what resolution or window option I set. If I drag the game window to my regular ol' 1080p second monitor it's totally fine but it's in an awkward position on my desk.

Also clicking through the MP options a bit I already miss persistent fleets and accompanying customization, but I can understand why they moved away from it.
