Burn dust! Eat my rubber!

Bully is a game released by Rockstar Games in 2006. In it, you play as Jimmy Hopkins, a 15 year old malcontent who struggles with issues ranging from being from a broken home to trying to fit in with the various cliques at his new school, Bullworth Academy.

Along the way, he makes friends, enemies, finds love, betrayal, hardship, treachery, downfall, and ultimate redemption.

And a healthy dose of hilarity.

It is, as they say, a dog eat dog world, and Jimmy must fight to survive it.

---

Welcome to the LP! If you aren't familiar with Bully (or Canis Canem Edit, as it is known in Europe), it is basically Grand Theft Auto ... without the killing. Or stealing cars. Or guns. Or hookers. Or ... Well, okay, maybe it doesn't seem much like it, but in actuality it plays very much like your standard GTA game. It features an open world that is unlocked steadily as you progress through the game, and the storyline progresses through missions. You can choose to do them, or simply faff about if that's your thing (although you'd probably get bored pretty quick in the beginning/get in trouble for truancy). The game features much of the same witty Rockstar humor that you can expect from other titles.

How it differs from Grand Theft Auto: the level of detail put into this world is breathtaking. Every single NPC in the game is a unique character, with unique dialogue, unique behaviors and motivations. Each one tells a story on their own, and breathes even more life into what is already a fantastic story. Bullworth Academy and its accompanying town are both charming and well-detailed to an almost painstaking degree. The voiceovers and characterizations are spot-on, and the soundtrack is phenomenal.

... Okay, I'll quit gushing about it. Point is, this game is really, really good.

This is a video LP, and will be of the Scholarship Edition version released in 2008 for the Xbox 360 and Windows. I will be playing the Windows version.

The LP is complete! Special thank you to achtungnight for all his hard work in helping out with character bios and behind the scenes info!

Jimmy Hopkins

Our stalwart hero, Jimmy comes from a broken home. His mother has jumped from failed marriage to failed marriage, latching on to whoever is willing to provide her with the lavish lifestyle she craves. Jimmy, unhappy with the turbulent lifestyle his mother has created for him, has become something of a problem child. His reckless behavior has caused his expulsion from virtually every private school in the country. Jimmy's mother, at her wit's end with his rebelliousness, has decided to dump him at Bullworth Academy, a school with the unsavory reputation of being the worst school in the country.

Why, you may ask? For one very good reason: its bully problem. At Bullworth Academy, it seems that bullying is not only not discouraged, but actually CONDONED. The headmaster of the school sees it as little more than school spirit and harmless high jinks. As such, he turns a blind eye to a school cultural issue that has gone unaddressed for too long.

All it will take is a spark to ignite this powder keg waiting to explode. Will Jimmy be that spark? Or will he be the one who helps the school find its humanity, bringing peace and order to an institution on the verge of spinning out of control?

Editor's Note: Jimmy flouts authority, stimulates the economy by stealing personal items from lockers, and gives the prefects wedgies. Jimmy is a good kid.

I loved this game but feel it's EU title is better at describing what it is: Canis Canem Edit. Literally translates to Dog Eat Dog, which is more representative of the situation at hand because the Bullying problem is a symptom of Bullworth's problems, not it's cause.

I did a few videos in advance to give myself a bit of legroom. Feel free to view ahead if that's your thing.

I will be posting them here on an irregular basis (basically whenever I feel like it). This probably translates into: every couple days or so.

That said, part 2 is fairly short so I'll go ahead and throw it up on here soon, along with another character bio, this time of the universally-loved Gary.

EDIT: And yes, I do plan to 100% the game.

Gary Smith

Little is known about Gary's background. He claims, in his own words, to have ADD, and that much of his problems stem from his parents. Whether that is true or not is up for debate.

Regardless, Gary has a very poor reputation at Bullworth. Other students tend to fear and avoid him. Algernon Papadapoulos (known as Algie to his classmates) refers to him as a “sociopath”,
and judging from Gary's behavior, there isn't much to dissuade one from this conclusion. Gary bullies and teases other students mercilessly, especially Pete Kowalski, a diminutive classmate who
has recently befriended both Gary and Jimmy Hopkins.

Gary, despite his horrible personality and reputation, seems to have a preternatural ability to manipulate others into doing his bidding. With increasing tendencies toward megalomania, it appears
that Gary's grasp on reality is slipping at an alarming rate. With this volatile combination, it's certain to be only a matter of time before Gary ends up becoming a far bigger problem than Jimmy realizes.

Editor's Note: Gary's a psycho. I hate Gary. So should you.

Pete Kowalski

Peter Kowalski is a student at Bullworth Academy, and a classmate of Jimmy Hopkins. He prefers to be called Pete, but is generally referred to as “Petey” by his other classmates.
Pete has recently befriended Jimmy Hopkins and Gary Smith, a fact which he is overjoyed by, despite the incessant bullying to which he is subjected at the hands of Gary.

Pete has a very low self-esteem and generally regards himself as something of a loser, remarking that he's “too cool to be a dork and too dorky to be anything else.”
This may have some merit, as he doesn't seem to fit in with any of the school cliques, not even the Nerds.
Nevertheless, the newcomer Jimmy Hopkins, at least, regards him as a friend, though whether one on equal standing remains to be seen.

Editor's Note: I probably identify with Petey more than anyone in the game, save Jimmy.

Beatrice Trudeau

Beatrice is a member of the Nerds clique at Bullworth Academy, and is the first of Jimmy Hopkins' girlfriends.
After Jimmy rescued Beatrice's lab notes from the clutches of Mandy, the popular captain of the cheerleading team, Beatrice fell instantly in love with him.

Her affections (obsession?) for Jimmy have led her to develop some rather startling delusions and departures from reality, however, as she has spun a relationship between
Jimmy and herself out of whole cloth and now assumes the two of them to be in love. Jimmy, despite his protestations, doesn't do much to dissuade her of this notion.

Bucky, a fellow member of the Nerd clique, is obviously in love with Beatrice, but she's clueless to his affections.

Editor's Note: Girls like Beatrice tend to irritate the crap out of me. But that's just me.

My favorite girls in the game are the last girl we’ll meet- no spoilers- and also the two generic girls Christy (redhead with ponytail) & Angie (pigtails & glasses, Asian chick). If you can catch the latter two characters in a cat fight, you should definitely show it off.

Dr. Crabblesnitch

Dr. Crabblesnitch is the headmaster and principal of Bullworth Academy. He is a former alumnus of the school, and takes great pride in continuing its traditions from his youth.
Unfortunately for the students, those traditions amount to a very Spartan mentality where only the strong survive. This has allowed the bullying problem at the school to thrive.

The headmaster, for all his faults, doesn't seem to uphold these traditions with any sort of malice, but rather ignorance.
He absolutely believes that such bullying is a positive experience that builds character and will lead to growth and development.

Editor's Note: While there is something to be said about adversity building character, intentionally fostering hatred and malice seems to be a foolish endeavor.

Miss Danvers

Dr. Crabblesnitch's administrative assistant and secretary, Miss Danvers oversees all the clerical duties of the Bullworth administration.
She also waits on him hand and foot, doing so willingly and with adoration. It is clear to everyone at Bullworth that she is in love with Dr. Crabblesnitch, though whether that is clear to him is unknown.
Rumors persist that the two are in a romantic relationship, but these rumors are unconfirmed.

Editor's Note: One has to wonder WHY she's so in love with him. Attraction to money and power? Genuine love? Fear?

The Bullies (from left to right: Davis, Ethan, Tom, Trent, Troy, and Wade)

The Bullies are the current menace Jimmy must deal with at Bullworth. They take their marching orders from Russell, the overgrown behemoth of a boy who towers over all the other students (and even most grown men).
Each one dumber than the last, they respect brute strength and little else, which is why Russell lords over them.

It is clear that Jimmy will have to put an end to this Bully menace sooner, rather than later. Will Russell be the key to keeping them in line?

Russell Northrop

Russell is the reigning Bully at Bullworth. A hulking brute of a boy, he towers over even grown men. The Bullies all answer to him, and the other cliques dare not cross him.
Russell uses his immense physical strength to his advantage, intimidating others and cowing them into submission.
He has even been known to bully the Jocks, at times, and is capable of lifting a man straight off the ground with one hand.
There are rumors that Russell's size may be the result of a medical condition, such as gigantism or acromegaly; Russell has mentioned that Nurse MacRae told him he has overactive glands.

After Jimmy Hopkins defeats him in a fierce battle under the school, Russell has a change of heart about his bullying ways.
Jimmy explains to him the difference between right and wrong, a concept of which Russell seems to have been genuinely unaware.
Russell appears to possess a child's mind, and obediently follows Jimmy's lead, after being soundly defeated by him.

Now that Russell has been pacified, the other Bullies quickly fall into line. Will this mean the turn of the tide for Jimmy? Or have his problems at Bullworth only just begun?

Editor's Note: Russell is awesome.

And goddamnit I just realised the pun in Rich Kid Blues - The Blue checked outfits that they all wear. After all I think police uniforms are also described sometimes as "Blues". Never occurred to me that the obvious meaning wasn't the whole thing. And yeah Russel's pretty great. Him and Petey are the only characters that don't cowtow to their new leader, and use Jimmy as an example rather than a crutch. Petey attempts to be genuinely friendly towards Jimmy and is the first one to try to stand up to Gary by warning Jimmy about his ability to take things out of context (and is punished for it in the same scene) and Russel is loyal, yet independent.

Together they form the pillars of Jimmy's influence - Pete as the emotionally open yet mentally strong character, and Russel as the physical strength.

Yep. You can, for instance, harass girls who will turn out to be your girlfriends in later chapters. There are also a few "clique" characters that will initially be neutral/hostile to Jimmy, depending on your reputation level with them, that have some bearing on the story. All can be messed with. As far as Gary and Petey, though, they are special cases who only appear on a mission basis, not in free roam. (Too bad, really, I'd love to beat the crap out of Gary whenever the whim struck me).

I would like the chance to randomly beat up Gary too. Also some of the Faction Bosses who don't appear wandering around, even at the end of the game (Darby is one of these). Russell is the only Faction Boss who can appear wandering around, and picking on him usually isn't a great idea.

One thing Antherus hasn't touched on much is the diversity of ways you can interact with characters in this game. I'll discuss this a little, trying to avoid spoilers mostly.

All characters can be picked on in various ways. Be aware that bullying and violence can build your Trouble Meter, however. Directing it toward Girls or Little Kids builds it faster, and directing it at Adults or Authority Figures (Prefects, Teachers, Dr. Crabblesnitch and his secretary, some others we'll see later) faster still.

Get in enough trouble, Authority Figures will constantly chase you and try to grab you, as can be seen in the videos. Jimmy can usually escape or fight them off, but sometimes it can be a challenge. You can knock out other kids, but never Adults or Authority Figures- violence can only knock them down and hold them back for a bit. Apologies are only effective against minor crimes (yellow Trouble Meter, not red), and you have to pass various levels of English Class for the apologies to work and lower your Trouble Meter. Escaping is usually a better idea- and here travel enhancing items like the Skateboard are very helpful. So are Marbles, Stink Bombs, and Itching Powder if thrown at your pursuers. Of greatest help are areas where Authority Figures never appear or follow you like the Boys' Dorm and other hideouts we'll unlock later. Get to one of them, you're safe to relax till the heat's off.

There are many ways to bully people. Punching, wedgies; throwing stink bombs, firecrackers, eggs, etc.; pulling the fire alarm, Kick Me signs, putting people in trash cans- we've seen all that. I'm not sure if we've yet seen Lockering (putting someone into a locker and slamming the door). Shove Taunts we've seen, the special rear Shove Taunt you can do with Girls has not yet been shown off (it is kinda rude). I don't engage in bullying much when I play, though- it's fun but I don't like to set off the Trouble Meter. Something special happens if you're caught and it's high. Antherus has yet to show that off, so I won't spoil it. I hope he addresses it (and the non 100% rewards available) at some point, particularly the unique Trouble-Caught event available in Chapter 3.

It is also not possible as far as I know to get people to give you money for bullying them, although you can be told to pay up for your own bullying by those who bully you. Jimmy has to make extra money in other ways- I'll let Antherus continue showing them off as they're unlocked. The main way in the early game is by completing Missions and Errands.

Positive interaction is also possible as well as negative. It is possible to verbally praise (or mock) any character in the game. There's a large amount of varied lines for this. If you praise certain people, you can also get benefits from them.

The main benefit Antherus has shown off is the ability to kiss Girls for extra Health. For this, you need (in the beginning) gifts for the Girls- flowers or chocolates. As you pass Art Class Levels, your Kisses get more effective. The gifts always work with the Non-Faction Girls- Asian Angie, Redhead Christy. BBW Eunice only likes chocolates. For the Faction Girls such as Beatrice (Nerds) and Mandy (Jocks), you need to complete their Missions to get them to like you first. As has been discussed, you can also get some Boys to kiss you- you have to figure out which ones for yourself, although there are some hints in the game and guides online. Jimmy can't ever kiss anyone outside his age group.

You can also hire Boys from each Faction to follow you around and defend you after you max out their Faction's Respect. Russell and the Bullies have already been unlocked for this via completing Chapter 1, and we'll get Respect from the other Factions in later chapters. You can't hire Non-Faction Boys. It's also not always wise to hire some Factions- Jocks do go after Nerds a lot and Greasers tend to harass Preps and vice versa. You might not think Nerds make effective defenders, but considering they are often armed with Firecrackers and other projectile weapons... Attack your defender or members of their Faction, they stop working for you. Hide too often from them, they can also get bored and wander off. And as is usual in video games, wander too far away and they will stop following you. You also don't want to take people into a rival Faction's hangout unless you want a fight. You can only hire one defender at a time (shame, I'd love to roll with a posse like in GTA San Andreas), it costs $1, and you can't hire the Boys you can Romance after you pass Art 1 (this is key to discovering them).

There are seven Factions total- Non-Factions, Bullies, Preps, Greasers, Nerds, Jocks, and Townies. Adults, Little Kids, and Authority Figures exist outside these Factions. Each Faction has unique members- 7 or 8 Boys, a Leader, and one Girl. One of the Boys in each Faction is always tougher than the others- Davis for the Bullies for example. Usually they're a unique Boss Fight at some point. The Leader is always a Boss Fight. The only Faction without a Leader, a Tough Guy, or a Hangout is the Non-Factions- they have three Girls instead (Angie, Christy, Eunice). They're also the only Faction Jimmy can't hire and whose Respect he doesn't have to worry about. One Faction does not have a Boy you can kiss in it, but I won't reveal which one at this time. The other six all have such a Boy. The only Faction with no Girls (they also have no Dodgeball Team in addition to the Non-Factions) is the Bullies, they also have only 7 Boys instead of 8.

The characters become more defined for many players when they reach Chapter 3 and unlock the Collectible Yearbook Photographs. Before that, they're usually just faces in the crowd and only mean something extra if you encounter them in a Mission or interact with them often for personal reasons (I like redheads and Asian Girls, so Christy & Angie gets lots of kisses in my games). But they do take on more personality over time.

I'll mention what I know of various unique characters as their Bios are mentioned. I'll save Jimmy, Petie, and Gary till after the final mission to avoid game spoilers. I'll also get any characters not Bioed at that point- if this is okay with Antherus. I can stop it if requested.

A lot of this comes from the Bully Wiki.

For the Bullies-

Bullies can be spotted easily by their untucked white shirts. In Chapter 1, they are a frequent easily defeated enemy.

They have no official Hideout, but they are more aggressive in the school parking lot area. They generally wander all over the place, usually picking on everybody, the weak more often than the strong. Other Factions don't usually bother them much. The Bullies are just above the Nerds and the Non-Factions in the school's pecking order- this means they don't often go after the Preps, Greasers, or Jocks. They generally always go after Jimmy on sight during Chapter 1, especially after Defend Bucky. After you complete the Chapter (Defeat Russell), they calm down and don't bother Jimmy unless he bothers them first. This stays in effect for the remainder of the game. They do bother his hired defenders, though.

- Russell is the Leader of the Bullies, the biggest and strongest. He is always nice to Jimmy on sight after Chapter 1- you don't even need to compliment him first to hire him as a defender. Have another defender or tease him first, then apologize, to make him act normally. In early game development, he was originally the Leader of the Dropouts or Punks Factions, but both of these groups were dropped from the Bully story over time. Russell is the most effective defender you can hire, and he also can't be bullied with many special moves, including Lockering and Wedgies. The only ones that work are Shove Taunt and Trip. Russell also has the most unique fighting style among the Bullies with wrestling moves, higher damage and stamina, high blocking power, and the ability to break out of grapples.

- Davis (small, brown hair) is the fastest Bully, even faster than Jimmy when sprinting. As seen in the Mission The Setup, you have to defeat him to get the Slingshot. He is also the most effective runner among the Bullies and the best with ranged attacks.

- Ethan (black guy) claims to be into Ninjas and Martial Arts, but his fighting style is no different from anyone else's.

- Tom (T-shirt, New York accent, brown hair, black eye) is a bit older and more mature than the others. He is the Bully with the fewest on-screen appearances outside free roam.

- Trent (blonde hair, California Valley accent) is the Bully Jimmy can kiss. He's also a member of the Photography and Drama Clubs and talks a lot about how much he enjoys kissing Girls. He has the most on-screen appearances in Missions. He wears an Edna Mask during Halloween.

- Troy (red hair) is a frequent enemy in Chapter 1 but doesn't show up much afterwards. He's the most violent and easily confused Bully.

- Wade (brown hair, big nose) is the first Bully to confront and fight Jimmy at Bulworth. He may be related to Christy, as they share the same last name (Martin). He is the most rage-filled and resentful of the group. He is also the only character who can be hostile to Jimmy without prior bullying from Jimmy and 100% Faction Respect- do the Errand where he steals a Little Girl's Teddy Bear.

Of the other characters so far addressed-

- Dr. Crabblesnitch is an alumnus of Bulworth and a former Prefect. He was also the School History Teacher before he became Headmaster. He occasionally can be seen wandering around the school and can be attacked, shoved, taunted, and wedgied as freely as any other Adult. Be aware, though, that if he starts chasing you, he is one of the very few characters besides Jimmy who can never run out of stamina.

- Miss Danvers is Dr. Crabblesnitch's secretary and the voice on Bulworth Academy's PA system. She may or may not be having an affair with Dr. Crabblesnitch per in-game dialogue. She was originally supposed to give Jimmy a complete tour of the School Grounds during the first game Mission (Welcome to Bulworth), but this was scrapped for some reason.

I'll address Beatrice when we see the rest of her Faction, the Nerds.

Ah, my teenage years.

Also, Gary is nothing like the Boss from Saints Row. The Boss actually cares about her friends. :colbert:

Get in enough trouble, Authority Figures will constantly chase you and try to grab you, as can be seen in the videos. Jimmy can usually escape or fight them off, but sometimes it can be a challenge. You can knock out other kids, but never Adults or Authority Figures- violence can only knock them down and hold them back for a bit

what is your criteria for knocked down? it's entirely possible to KO a prefect or crabblesnitch's secretary by spamming firecrackers at them, and cops in particular have a weird saunter in their AI that makes them possible to punch down. if you can deplete their health they go into the same "OH GOD WHAT A WORLD" squirming heap that everyone else does.
