in college I went to an Amazon presentation trying to get CS majors to apply and the guy straight up said they weren't automating fulfillment centers because they'd have to build capacity for the Xmas rush that would go unused most of the year so it was just cheaper to hire temps as part of his regular presentation with a slide deck and everything

it was pretty revealing at the time and has only become more so in hindsight

I think the official explanation for why the core landed so hard was that it ran out of fuel on the way down. doesn't that mean it leaked more than expected or did they miscalculate the fuel required? well I guess one implies the othet

kinda I guess. worst one for me was spending most of iron man 3 wondering what the gently caress could possibly be causing Richie Richard panic attacks even though I'd seen whatever movie that plot point was from too

not that I'd spend time ~catching up~ on the marvel universe to prepare to watch very nicely rendered destruction but I bet the market is there. the only reason I can think of for someone watching old marvel movies to come to to decide to skip the new one is if they remember they're kinda whatever on average

The only problem is, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) had dismissed Swarm’s application for its experimental satellites a month earlier, on safety grounds. The FCC is responsible for regulating commercial satellites, including minimizing the chance of accidents in space. It feared that the four SpaceBees now orbiting the Earth would pose an unacceptable collision risk for other spacecraft.

remember the other year when the FCC told some company they couldn't use the satalite they paid to build and put in orbit because it interfered with lovely GPS receivers? lmao this is somehow worse

airline seats are unbelievably terrible and i'm convinced that they do it on purpose.

like, the tiny bench seat in the 40-year-old cessna 152 i fly, which has a cabin this big

is still about an order of magnitude more comfortable than any economy-class airline seat i've experienced in my life.

those don't have to function as flotation devices in the event of a water landing because nobody is going to survive that in a cessna anyway

IDK if it's the lense but that looks too narrow for me which I hate more than hard seats because my rear end recovers from them a lot faster than my back does from scrunching up my shoulders for hours

that's probably the right order of magnitude but it's more about preventing possible tragedy than saving an appreciable number of lives. sounds real bad when survivors drown because there's nothing to float on even if there usually aren't survivors to need to float

edit: better article on the site http://www.equipped.com/ditchingmyths.htm

I figured the gear going into the water would flip it clean over and knock the occupants around enough to make sure nobody would be conscious enough to get out but I also didn't bother to check to see if it had retractable gear
