I think they did explain it, but even if not, you can figure it out when his dad is shown as not asian in the flashbacks. I didn't outright love the show but I enjoyed it. All the people commenting on it being a 90's show with modern production are absolutely right, it made me think specifically of the movie Strange Days which had not only a similar vibe, but similar themes of consciousness transfer and snuff prostitution.
