Why is it a problem that MAME was used? Speed runners use emulators with a heavy use of save states all of the time, not to mention exploits and glitches. All of the top Super Mario speed runs for example are with exploits.

Because he claimed he achieved those scores on original hardware, without using exploits and glitches or save states. Like the possibility that he used save states is really messed up.

About halfway through the hotel (I think) right now, and I've started just skipping through the dialogue really quickly.

People say it's a good story and I'm sure it is. But I don't care about story in a platformer.

That's the only place with a lot of dialogue interruptions and it contrasts with the rest of the game. The story is good cause it reflects on the levels and makes them feel more like real places.

In general the story is handled by optional scenes where you can talk to folks if you want, short scenes bookending chapters, and very short and rare interruptions (excepting ch3). It's a game that knows when to talk and when it shut up and I was impressed.

Yea lol. I think it's cool that you can pretty much just focus on the things you care about and ignore the rest, but I wish they did a better job of communicating that.

Honestly I don't even remember the controversy other than the developer being in some way lovely or racist or something.

That is sort of the basics of why it's not really being called out. The controversy around the devs happened three years ago and was mostly lost in the shuffle of all the poo poo hitting the fan back then. Since then nothing has really caught in people's minds, like the only controversy that really stuck was the one about not putting black people in the game and that's only among the most woke of folks.

Also the dev is kinda squirly about how much of a nazi he is, like "I'm not a racist but I just think races shouldn't be together" kind of stuff but more dogwhistley. Like he'll fund a game developer in India but never want to work with a non-white person kind of thing.

So yea I don't think this really means that gamers in general are cool with nazis, or at least not more than they were before. It's just a weird situation involving a lot of factors, and that he's not as stupid as other nazis who have gotten in trouble.

Don't buy the game tho lol

I want to play Into The Breach but knowing it came from the FTL team makes me hesitate. That was another good game that had the tendency to just gently caress me over constantly until I lost all interest. This looks at least less random and more hands-on compared to "pick a quadrant, maybe an advanced ship completely fucks you up, game over" but I want to know how much more skill is involved over loving RNG.

ITB isn't just less random than FTL, it's an extremely good example of a game that makes everything that goes wrong specifically your fault. It also never throws a super hard challenge at you without telling you what's going to happen first, hard battles are clearly marked before you choose them.
