Itís nice to see the Cody McLeod acquisition is working out exactly like everyone thought it would. Gortonís strategy is to have him injure as many players as possible, thus creating demand for a larger trade market. Same reason Burrows attacked Hall. Itís genius, really.

Also they should just do a playoff lottery. Top 16 teams make the playoffs. You find out who you play when Daley opens the envelopes.

Brendan, how'd you like to stay in NY?

This has *got* to be a precursor to some kind of trade, right? Making cap room for old Brooks Orpik I imagine?

please god take Orpik and a draft pick for McDonagh

The "falling off a cliff" thing was something that was thrown out by one of the reporters. Something like "can you explain why his game fell off a cliff"? It's not like Gorton pulled that out of his rear end. He did repeat that he couldn't explain why his game fell of a cliff but it still feels like Rosen is intentionally mis-characterizing that comment.

If Capitals keep playing dumbass man to man defense they will be lucky to make the playoffs. The Metro is tightening up. They look outmatched too often and they only have 11 home games left. I still feel like theyíll make some adjustments and improve but as of right now their coaches and scheme are their second biggest problem. Biggest issue is constant fumblepuck by Niskanen, Orpik and Bowey. People like to scapegoat Orpik - he deserves it to an extent but Niskanen has been the one making horrible turnovers the past few games.

Have they always played this under Trotz and I just didn't pay attention? Seriously that's one of my/the criticisms of AV is that he runs this kind of man on man style defense that when it works it can work really well but is just hard to play and have everyone on the same page at the same time so it often breaks down with a bunch of guys looking around trying to figure out where they should go

It's freaking me out that all the criticism of the Caps coaching is basically word for word my criticism of AV's coaching

Nope. In fact this is a return to the Oates/Hunter years. Like someone else mentioned it can be extremely effective when everyone is on the same page but too often results in long possessions and egregious defensive breakdowns. Iím totally putting words into Trotzís mouth but it feels like ďthis is playoff hockey, boys - If we play this way now weíll be ready in April.Ē I just think itís bad hockey.

They should just let all 32 teams be in the lottery and give less weighting to the bad teams. There is so much parity anyway and Edmonton has shown us all that getting a bunch of number 1ís is no guarantee for success.

Some day, Oilers players will get smart and start insisting on trade clauses (the opposite of NTC) where the Oilers can have a 5-team list of teams they donít have to trade you to for a conditional draft pick. Iím thinking this should go in the next CBA.
