And it would have been a great deal for the Flyers and a pretty good deal for the Sens. Whatever a team would be willing to pay to get Crosby, Malkin, or McDavid for 2 years should be what they're willing to pay to get Karlsson for 2 years.

He's suffered a bit this year due to a quick turnaround from offseason surgery, but a big part of his bad numbers this year are the result of a terrible PDO. You just have to look at the playoffs last year to see what a team would be getting if they traded for him - the Sens were bottom-tier trash in the 30 minutes/game he sat on the bench, but looked like a legitimate cup threat when he was on the ice.

That’s not how pdo works!

I meant his bad +/- and his lack of points. He's got a 7.7% rel corsi this year (almost 4% higher than any other regular Sens skater), but the goalies have been sieves and pucks aren't going in when he's on the ice.

Depending on what comes back, this may allow them to actually re-sign Stone and Karlsson?

I don't get this trade from either team's perspective.

Ottawa's losing one of its worst defensemen (with an anchor contract) AND a barely-AHL-level forward, and in return it's getting a decent 4th liner and whatever's left of Marion Gaborik on a much more manageable contract for The Budget.

e: Nick Shore's putting up pretty good relative possession numbers on LA, while Thompson is one of the worst skaters in the NHL and Phaneuf is a complete black hole for possession.

Did Ottawa...win a trade?

Taking away Guy Boucher's ability to put Nate Thompson on the ice makes it a clear win, even before factoring in that they've also lost Phaneuf.

Now trade Ceci and this team might look decent next year.

I'd be hard-pressed to say Phaneuf is the best player in the trade. He's got a -6.5% rel CF on one of the worst possession teams in the NHL. He's also very slow.

Well, at least while they’re tanking fans can watch top prospect Colin White!

Hope is dead

Dzingel-Shore-White sounds a lot better than most of the alternatives available.

Step 1: Trade young, good Zibanejad for older, declining but also good Brassard

Step 2: One year later, aggressively shop Brassard despite having no other internal options for 2nd line centre.

I have no idea what this team is doing other than desperately flailing around trying to cut salary to save Melnyk money. They trade away their first rounder to go all in on Duchene, and then immediately turned around and started selling assets to try to tank.

Unless the Sens are picking top 3 this year, the best strategy would appear to be to just let Colorado take their 1st this year, because next year’s is almost definitely going to be worse. And if they’re doing this, they may as well go all-in and cut ties with Duchene, Stone, and Hoffman as well. A full-out tank and cap-floor spending would definitely save Melnyk some money.

e: I’m starting to get that feeling of hopelessness that I’m guessing Leafs fans had in the Poulin era. There’s basically no chance of this team being good or entertaining until Melnyk is gone.

Fun fact: the 2nd rounder that the Sens gave up to avoid paying Brassard’s 2 million signing bonus is probably going to be 35th overall or better.

Fantastic asset management by Dorion, definitely worth his recent extension. Next up, ruining the return for Karlsson by shackling him to Ryan in any trade. If that fails, maybe they can give up a lottery pick to get someone to pick up his contract.

The whole Bob thread is worth reading. In brief, even though the Sens aren’t going to be concerned about cap space for the next 4-5 years, they’re completely kneecapping themselves on the Karlsson trade because Melnyk wants to cut the player budget. This is the dumbest team.
