Would the Pels still aim for Monroe even if they add Mirotic? I guess they don't play the same position, so maybe?

https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/959111395261509632

Local reporters say they are still going hard after Monroe.

Looks like the Pels were able to package Omer, Asik, Allen, and Nelson in addition to the first round pick in exchange for Mirotic and a second rounder. That frees up roster spots and salary for the pursuit of Monroe and (hopefully young) roster filler. Better return for the Pels than the proposal a couple days ago.

Getting Monroe for free is great for the Pelicans. He can replicate the passing of cousins, rebound a little, and score in the post a little. Mirotic lets them do more. I like that they're not surrendering the season

Did they actually get him? I know the Celtics are really looking at him, too.

The Twin Towers line-up worked in spite of the era of small-ball because Cousins and Davis are some of the best basketball players on the planet. Monroe is significantly less so

He'd be a solid pickup for a team just devastated by an injury and short on talent but I don't think it'll be a "80% of Cousins, so plug-and-play for 80% the production". They are going to have to get a little more creative in their lineups since you can't play him for 40 minutes and expect him to drop 3 point bombs to cover defensive deficiencies.

Oh, definitely. But even when Cousins and Davis are both healthy, the team would like to play them fewer minutes. Not sure he would stick around for that kind of deal after this season, but that would be ok.

10. Cheering Omer Asik
This was the only happy subplot to DeMarcus Cousins' devastating injury -- a seismic event that could alter Cousins' career and tilt the axis of the league.

The Pelicans suddenly needed Asik again after he missed time due to Crohn's disease, and when he took the floor, New Orleans fans showered him with what seemed like genuine encouragement. They cheered every little thing -- every basket, every rebound, every free throw -- and groaned with the sorrow of nervous Little League parents when he missed chippies. They knew what he had gone through, how low he sunk, and wanted him to rise out of it. (I checked with several folks who attended recent games, and they agree the cheers were sincere -- and not sarcastic.)

It's easy to forget now, but Asik was once a good player -- so good, the Rockets started the bidding for him at three first-round picks. (Spoiler: They did not get three first-round picks.) He set cement-wall screens, rolled to the hoop, and dished canny interior passes. He barricaded the rim, and rebounded everything.

Then he got paid, and became both a punchline and the target of ire from fans who (understandably) grew frustrated with an unproductive oaf clogging their favorite team's cap sheet. Before September, no one really knew what was going on with Asik -- only that he was ill, and not playing.

When he first came back in December, Asik looked alarmingly unready -- almost wobbly on his feet. He was no longer an NBA player.

He has shown glimpses in the past week of the player he used to be. It would be a wonderful story if he got there.

Yeah that makes sense. Is the New Orleans floor slippery or are their trainers bad or is it just the worst luck in the world? This is a question to rival the tootsie pop

A ton of it is freak injury occurrence stuff. Like teammates concussing each other. Backs getting broken by other players. Nearly dying to a bacterial infection overseas then later developing something like Crohn's. Dunking too hard causing your hand to break. Hiding extent of knee injury of team. Undisclosed lower leg injuries from a previous team. Probably some more that I have forgotten, too.

Then there is some that may be related to either trainers or overuse, like Cousins.
