I'm thinking its most likely that White Hair is a half sibling, yeah. And Nellie probably just had a go at her with some fabric shears or something similarly crazed. White Hair says "those" rather than "that," after all, and while learning a trade has historically been looked down upon for gentry, ladies having some skill with embroidery or other similar types of handiwork is usually acceptable. e: I'll be surprised if Nellie tried to kill her instead of disfigure her. Transmigration of some sort does seem likely. Maybe the mansion is only meant for a certain defined set of souls. The stage where the cycle of death and life is brought into relief. If Mell is now Bestia and the WHG is now the WH Blind Girl... Is Pauline Nellie? I suppose we will see. This hideous man/monster and blind woman pairing is fairly tropey so I'm wondering where it'll go.

Maybe the WHG is some sort of romantic monkey's paw. I think the anachronisms are just writer error, though. People underestimate the difficulty of writing period accurate fiction, and this work jumps through several periods and locations.

Server side character encoding issue mainly affecting smart quotes and other smart characters. If you're using Word to write updates, turn off smart characters and replace the quotation marks with the normal type.
