No. The plan was to use an air cannon to simulate the explosion and dub in the sound fx in post. Then there was a problem with the air cannon, so the fx team said "Hey, we could just do a real explosion instead." "Great," said the production team. "It's a go."

Except no one remembered to tell Syl about the change. He was completely unaware that a real explosion was going to happen. But he just rolled with it anyway.

"The Big Finish" does kinda sound like a Doctor Who villain, I guess. From the RTD years, anyway.

The best was from the documentary about Who on Audio from one of the DVDs, where Jason Haigh-Ellery says he was originally going to call Big Finish "Rock Solid Productions", but changed his mind when he realized it sounded like the name of a porn company. Then, after a few moments, he confesses "I know Big Finish doesn't sound much better."

(FYI, they got the name Big Finish from an ep of the Steven Moffat series "Press Gang")

The other best was when Big Finish got the license to produce New Who related audios, and they did an interview with RTD who steadily got more ramped up with excitement talking about the potential stories there were to tell

"They could do a story about The Wire? I loved that villain but we didn't know much about her. Where did she come from? I'd like to know more about The Wire. Give me another Wire story. TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE WIRE! "

I seriously want RTD to do a podcast where he talks about Who every week.

My first exposure to Doctor Who was an ad for Who merchandise in a copy of Starlog in 1984. Fast forward to 1991 and my sister and I had just watched Plan 9 From Outer Space, wanting to see how bad this movie was. Afterwards, our father suggested switching over to PBS to see some bad special effects. Caught a couple of minutes of what I'd later learn was "The Pirate Planet". Couple of weeks later, caught the end of "The Androids of Tara", then a couple of weeks after that, watched some of "The Armageddon Factor". Then properly sat down and watched the whole of "Destiny of the Daleks" which hooked me as a fan.

I remember in 91 going to the mall, and going into Suncoast to look at movie posters, and being blown away by all the Doctor Who videos they sold (at full retail price!) I won a writing award in high school, and the prize was fifty dollars, and you can bet the first thing I did with it was to buy 2 Who videos (Three Doctors and The Deadly Assassin)

The first video I ever owned was a previously viewed copy of The Brain of Morbius I bought at a local video store for 5 bucks

*Funny little anecdote about that lost-now-found-ep "Tunnel of Fear". Apparently rumors were abound for years that a fan had an off air audio copy of "Tunnel" in his possession, but refused to allow a copy of it to be released so others could enjoy it. If it's true, it's funny as hell that his audio copy is worthless now.

I'm suddenly thankful as all hell that none of the Doctor Who fans who recorded the audio of the now-missing episodes as they aired weren't quite so selfish as this.

It's more amazing that due to several fans, every episode that's missing has an audio counterpart. I don't think there's another show like that.

There was a supposedly official Space: 2099 show in development, but I haven't heard anything new about it for a few years. It's probably gone the same way as the Blake's 7 reboot(s) that have been talked about but never happened.

They 'reimagined' (hosed with) the design of the Eagle a bit too much in their concept art, to my mind. "What's the single most iconic and memorable thing about the old show? Yeah, we're gonna JJ that bitch up."

George Lucas changed the design of Han Solo's ship because it resembled the Eagle too much. It became the blockade runner at the beginning.

Still, the 1999 Eagle became the Millennium Falcon

The Brig had a good function in being an authority figure to say "This fellow is on the level," to cut through some of the capture-and-release, even if, in the end, it was usually undermined by the Brig not believing the Doctor or by some other authority figure telling the Brig to go screw himself.

My favorite (I think it was "Invasion of the Dinosaurs"), the Brig's been relieved, and the new man in charge, working in aid with the villains, orders Benton to lock the Doctor up. Benton does so, but after the new guy leaves, looks at the Doctor, and says "You'd better get out of here", turning his back so the Doctor can render him unconscious.
