I have several thousand hours sunk into RSE. (they were released when I was a lonely young teenager, ok?) This gen has some of my favorite starter designs, and a lot of the new Pokemon are really cool. I'm really happy to see someone visiting it again.

Same, I really like this gen's music.

Also, what the hell is going on with the oldale slogan? "Oldale Town/Kotoki Town: Where things start off scare."

Ralts is going to take longer to level up because of its XP curve. The Ralts line has the "slow" curve, while Mudkip's line is "medium slow" (same as all the other starters). The XP curve defines how much XP the Pokemon needs to reach the next level.

Ranmaru (which is a great name for Ralts) needs 339 XP to go from level 9 to level 10, while Nobunaga only needed 141.

I also like FreeSamples, but honestly Gumball would be a super cute name for Zigzagoon.

Blaze Dragon posted:

No kidding. Azumarill went from totally worthless in Gen 2, to having a good ability but not much else in Gen 3, to actually being able to use that ability in Gen 4, to powerful enough to be OU in Gen 6.

Sadly, since Gen 7 didn't keep adding Megas, we didn't get the obvious next step. Maybe next gen.

I second these choices and expect more Conquest naming for the rest of the party. Plus Ranmaru is just a perfect fit for a male Ralts.

Also time to gush a bit more about Hoenn! Namely, Grass types. Hoenn has the best Grass types. Sure, there are some pretty good Grass types in other places, but if I have to mono-Grass a region, it will be Hoenn, and indeed, that's exactly what I did when ORAS came out! Seeing how I had used Blaziken in Y and all, OR was a mono-Grass run and a very fun one too! Steel-types were a giant pain in the rear end though, but I still had a lot more fun than I would have with a normal run. With Pokemon as great as Mega Sceptile (not a fan of the normal one), Ludicolo, Shiftry, Breloom, Cradily and Roserade (okay, Gen 4, this was an OR run after all), and that's only the ones I used, Hoenn has a lot more choices! If you're into the weed, I can't think of a better place to be.

And you talked about the Wireless Adapter - I still have mine! Alongside a Link Cable too! Sure bring back memories, even if they're pointless now that consoles come with ways to connect without the need for more peripherals. Not like I ever got any use out of the Wireless Adapter anyways, what a weird gimmick. Still!

Agreed, Hoenn's grass types are great. I think the next best would be Alola, but that's cheating, the entire Gen VII dex is amazing.

No, it doesn't count as a regular buff. You can still raise the stat by 6 stages in battle.

It would be terrible if it counted as a stage.

Also, Team Aqua/Magma not primarily using Water + Ice/Fire + Ground Pokemon (even in the remake) really annoys me. At least the manga corrects that.

I feel like I've seen more Multi-Battles in these last two updates than I have in all of ORAS.

You know, that's a good point. I think the first time I played RSE, I kept expecting their whole environmentalism thing to be a front for a more nefarious plan, because they all had Dark pokemon.

But no, they weren't evil, just stupid.

I've always done the cave before Brawly. Dude's just too tough, I'd rather get the exp first, and it's not like Flash is ever really needed, much less in Gen 3.

Plus I nearly always run Torchic so evolving into Combusken gives me an easy way to use Peck for Flying damage. Not like that does a lot...

Same here, the XP is too useful.

Aron's line gets some nice buffs in later generations. Metal Sound (Steel-type Counter) in Gen IV, Heavy Slam (damage is based on user's weight relative to target's) and Autotomize (+2 Speed and cuts weight in half) in Gen V, and a Mega Evolution in Gen VI that boosts its already absurd Defense to 230.
Aron is designed around the Rock Head ability, which prevents recoil damage from most attacks. That means Take Down and Double Edge, which it learns but doesn't get STAB for, are suddenly risk-free. Even better, Aron gets Rock Head (150 base damage Rock-Type attack that gives 1/2 damage as recoil) as an Egg Move starting in Gen IV.

It's never going to be a top-tier pokemon, thanks to its typing. Fighting and Ground types are just way too popular. But it's definitely a great choice for the main story, and Aggron is my favorite pokemon.

I think it was also responsible for the much needed decline of HMs. Gen 4 was absolutely spoiled with them, and over the following generations they became less important, all the way to Gen 7 where they've been replaced entirely.

AI isn't easy to do. It works in 95% of the battles, and they don't want it to be too good because this is a game for children.

Route 120 is one of my favorite tracks in the whole series. It's so upbeat and adventurous!

RSE was the playground secrets generation. Anyone who lived through the first Pokemon craze remember the stories: pushing the truck to find Mew, a level 100 Charizard being able to Cut through the borders that stopped you from going out of bounds, Missingno... Those urban legends (some of which were true!) were a huge part of Pokemania.

Game Freak tried to capitalize on that by adding mechanics that followed the same mold. The Regis are the best examples of that (the directions for unlocking the chambers sound like urban legends), but I would count Feebas and Mirage Island as other examples.

Unlike every other Pokemon on the team, Shuppet is in the "fast" group. This means it needs only 800,000 XP to reach level 100, significantly lower than the 1,250,000 that Ralts will need, for example. Expect li'l Calbrena to need way less training than anyone else!

Interestingly, Shuppet is one of the few Pokemon in the fast group that isn't Normal or Fairy.

With better writing, it would be an inflection point in your rival's character arc. They realize they aren't going to beat you, you're just going to get better. No matter how many gym leaders they beat, you're still going to be better.

So they stop focusing on Pokemon battles and devote themselves to completing the Pokedex. The problem is the game does very little to show you that! Your rival just kind of disappears.

Maybe that makes sense... If they're no longer a competitor, the main character doesn't care about them anymore. But also, a lot of players try to complete their Pokedex too. That would make your rival look when worse if you finish it before them! But they could add another rival battle, showing off rare/interesting Pokemon with egg moves or something.

The early berry growing mechanic was not fun because it required way too much time investment for very little reward. The useful berries required so much watering to get any kind of usable yield -- it felt like no matter how much I watered my lum berries, I'd only get 1 back.

Not saying XY handled it well, it was a bit silly and I never actually bothered trying to grow anything there because I didn't have Fly yet. I liked how Sun/Moon handled it though, though I'll admit it really lowered the effort required.

Holy poo poo. Who is writing Pokemon Special, and can they please get some therapy? I know that series tends to be darker than the games, but it sounds like the RS arc goes way too far.

Beating the poo poo out of your son and telling him you're doing it because you love him is practically a cliche of child abuse. And apparently it's all because of the thing with the Salamence, which honestly sounds like a gaping plot hope. Ruby almost defeated the Salamence, which is impressive, but no one else was able to stop it? If this had happened before the move, Ruby was still a child and barely a Trainer at all. Why would Norman even need to take the blame? Shouldn't they be glad a child was able to defend themselves against a rampaging dragon?

Reading that post has left me feeling sick.

And I know they were going for some kind of bookending with destroying Weather Institute in the second fight, but that opens up a whole new set of problems. Were there any consequences for Norman destroying the Institute? Or is it ok when a gym leader does it, and you only blame people when a Pokemon does it?

Or maybe the first time, everyone was going to blame the Pokemon, but Norman insisted it was his fault. He made it a whole big deal and then failed the exam when everyone else was just trying to move on.

Or have I already put more thought into it than the author did?
