Meet the controlled opposition for the upcoming March 2018 Russian Presidential election: Ksenia Sobchak She's a reality tv star/talk show host/professional socialite who is trying to appeal to the "forgotten" Russian voters in rural areas.  Some think there's something fishy/fake about her candidacy quote:Sobchak has cited the Decembrists, 19th century aristocrats who forfeited their palaces and were sentenced to exile for challenging the ultimate power of the tsar, as one of her inspirations. Some skeptics accuse Sobchak of being a pawn of Putin bent to undermine opposition candidate Aleksei Navalny; the Kremlin often handpicks a high-profile liberal candidate to run in elections as part of its policy of "managed democracy" wherein Putin attempts to control the entire process. Other skeptics suspect Sobchak's candidacy is mostly about building her brand. Sobchak does not believe she can win against Putin in 2018, but has stated she's in it for the long haul: "Of course I want to be president, I want to win, but I also want to be sincere. In a system created by Putin, it is only possible for Putin to win. I am realistic about who will become the president." Under current Russian law, Putin may not run for President for a third consecutive term in 2024, just as he was barred from running for President in 2008.[19] Aleksei Nalavany, a lawyer activist who represents the "actual" opposition to Putin, has been banned from running. He is encouraging people to protest by not voting at all in an effort to delegitimize the election. So a huge chunk of Russians not voting is pretty much the only way to show that they weren't offered a choice. It'd be like if the Republican had been barred from running and people had to chose between a Dem or Libertarian or Green or any of the other third party nothings. It's clearly rigged, but the results wouldn't reflect that on their face. But yeah that's stupid. Nalavany or no Nalavany, it was always going to be a historic 99% for Putin with a historic 99% turn-out. For the record, Sobchak has said that she'd drop if Nalavany was allowed back in.

russian presidential elections are such an obvious and semi-public charade who's main function is to legitimize putin. not turning out is more of an act of defiance than voting for whatever sockpuppet he selects as his opposite number, since the votes themselves have no real effect on the outcome.
