Pre WW1 every power in Europe had built up super fancy armed forces and then signed tons of mutual defense pacts and they all couldn't wait to test their new toys. If it wasn't Germany / Austria / Franz Ferdinand it would have been some other proverbial straw breaking the camel's back. Blaming the Germans is pretty drat reductionist, even more than the first sentence in this post. Conch Shell Corp posted:The Großer Generalstab was convinced they needed a massive aggressive war that decade. So yeah true but you could say basically the same about any major power during the time. They weren't just signing pacts and building up armed forces for shits and giggles. Moridin920 fucked around with this message at 20:52 on Feb 14, 2018 |

quote:When war did come in the circumstances we know, no one bears more responsibility than the Germans, not because they deliberately started it to sate their thirst for conquest or something like that, but because no other country had the capacity to do more to hinder war yet did so little as the Germans did (this ofcourse greatly helped by the fatalism of the German officer corps). Fair enough.

The reason ppl are still angry with Japan afaik is that Japan is super loving incredibly difficult to get a meaningful admission and apology out of. Meanwhile Germany made it illegal to display a Swastika outside of very specific historical instruction purposes. So yeah WW2 happened long ago but Japan did some seriously hosed up poo poo and if you were Korean or Chinese it very well does sound like some idiot German going "well Germany did nothing wrong really we just lost is all."

I'm on my phone so I'm not trying to flippantly reply to your good post or anything but that's kind of a contradiction in terms imo given how many wars and proxy wars were funded or caused by colonial ambitions.
