Ff7 did not explain well at all that you were actually chasing and fighting Jenova instead of Sephiroth and some of this was the lovely graphics not making clear that "Sephiroth" was transforming into Jenova

I gave up on FF9. It really has not aged well at all, even in the context to the other PS1 games. The battles are so loving slow. the soundtrack calls back to better OSTs like Ff6 but is way less memorable. The writing is just painfully immature, like there's a big dramatic beat where Zidane finds out he's an alien or something and there's an extremely bad Power Of Friendship montage that made me stop playing I then went through ffx and that game is still really good. The battles are fun and fast, even if there's not much strategy. The story is actually really compelling, like the entire main quest being a pointless human sacrifice ritual, you succeed in saving the heroine but the hero dies, etc. The soundtrack is really good, the fun modern jazz stuff is really different from other games.

Tidus's dorkness has a story component because he's too clueless to pick up on the fact that Yuna is on a quest to kill herself and he hates himself for it later The story has layers and is worth replaying for

The FFX battle system would have gone from great to best if the strategy didn't boil down to Substitute In Character Strong Against Monster You also couldn't do interesting customization of the characters until way late in the game
