a ten year old boy finds a cool new vr place where all the funny subversive kids hang out. he lurks for months, finally makes a joke, it falls flat, everybody laughs at him. he flames out hard but someone pm’s him and tells him to ride it out. gradually he gets the hang of the place and is accepted. flash forward years and he’s eighteen, most of his spare time is spent in vr, all his friends are there. he wants to meet his best friend in person, but they’re suspiciously reticent. he does some research into the vr site’s hosting, again it’s weirdly mysterious, but eventually he gets around the blocks and finds an address. he heads to the place and sees... his mother. his mother programmed the whole thing, he’s been talking to bots for eight years

children are issued a watch when they turn three. the watch lets them talk to a funny cartoon dog. the dog grows up with them as their cognitive abilities improve, helping them through every dumb kiddy crisis, but also records everything. when they turn 18, there’s a big ceremony where the dog picks their future for them based on what it’s observed, and society just generally accepts this. a young woman is told to become a receptionist but hates it because she wants to be a firefighter. it turns out that the dog is right and she’s a terrible firefighter
