without knowing anything about it, I would guess the same thing happening across Europe and NA: the neoliberal consensus is collapsing, and center-left parties are going down with it because they’re the ones who actually believed in it, whereas the right only used it as cover for their real principles of nativism and plutocracy

Oh no, they're just fascist-friendly. The only outright fascist party is Fratelli d'Italia (literally the original Fascist Party). None of the other very overt and very illegal (but still uncontested because unlike Germany's our fascist party ban is a joke) fascist parties are in that list, except maybe in coalitions. Parties like Fiamma Tricolore (literally the original Fascist Party, part two), Forza Nuova (literally the original Fascist Party, part three) and CasaPound (formerly a fascist squat named after Ezra Pound, now a "party" of thugs and alleged small-time gangsters)

It's been a complete and utter disaster, every single time. Their latest online platform has been hacked immediately, opening a huge :can: on whether the kid who did the hack is a criminal or someone who has performed a public service (he's neither IMO). Many people in the Italian infosec community have been following the case and (stupidly) serving hot takes for days, because they're in a pretty understandable panic: what if the M5S wins, and they start criminalizing hacking?

An interesting thing about the Five Star Movement is that it's no longer a "movement" at all but a very typical political party. They have completely reformed it since its founding and removed all kinds of "direct democracy" and "participation" and replaced them with a pretty classical hierarchy. No, what's really interesting is that I think most people in the movement haven't even noticed the switch

Another interesting thing is that, like Salvini Premier and other populist parties in other countries, they're apparently being pushed hard by Russian bots

They were bought out is what I've been told as well, but I think the splinter groups that turned to terrorism around the same time also played a part. I'm hazy on history, sorry. All the left I've ever known personally was small local stuff like squats, 0% worker's parties, and the like

While I'm here, I guess I'll post about a friend's project. They created six Facebook bots, gave each sympathy for a specific party (by "liking" their pages), made them follow the same news sources, and then let them scroll their timelines several times a day, reporting on what they saw. The intent was to document "the bubble", and it's already yielding interesting results:

For some reason, fashbot is served almost exclusively photo posts, while the other bots mainly see link posts or a mix of links and photos. Undecidedbot is another outlier, who is shown way more videos than the others

The project is at a, well, embryonic stage, and the subproject specifically about the March elections has only been documented in Italian so far, but I'm rooting for them, even if they look terribly outmatched. And yeah it's all written in a pretty breathless and paranoid style but that's just my homie vecna being his usual self. I mean it's not like we're talking about epto

I've read that they now have an actual data scientist on board, and they may get even more interesting results

Speaking of "digital democracy", the Five Star Movement ignoramuses need not apply, because there's already an ongoing "digitalization" project that's very cool and that I'm participating to in my spare time. They talked about it at the last FOSDEM, and I know some of the people in it, so I know they're legit

By the way, these must be the first true "cyber" elections in Italy. For one, Facebook have decided to intervene directly, with this thing:

It's an automated, itemized summary of the positions expressed by each party on many topics and issues (shown here: agriculture and food). Commendable that they feel responsible, after the Trump fiasco, but I'm very skeptical of it. It also feels inappropriate for an entity like Facebook to do this (I haven't really thought hard about why I feel it's wrong, but I do)

Then there's these goobers, who use algorithms to determine for what party you should vote, based on a questionnaire: http://cosavoterai.it/. I haven't tried it but it'll probably peg me as communist, what else?

Finally, the circus noises in the background: the M5S hack, the shadow of Russian bots, etc.

thanks for the informative posts. i have a question: i read that the PD-led government recently passed electoral reform that all but ensures coalition governments as a necessity to rule. that seems ridiculous in a country that's already notorious for having short-lived governments since the post-WW2 era. that same article mentioned that M5S has the highest approval ratings of the parties in the upcoming election, and if it weren't for the new system, they'd probably have an outright majority in parliament

did they pass this law explicitly to gently caress over M5S, or was there another reason for it?

I'm an overseas citizen and every so often I get my voting papers in the mail. I mostly just ignore them since I don't think I should be voting for policies that won't effect me, and also I don't follow politics there closely enough. But I want to get involved this time in order to learn a bit.

Interestingly enough, Italians living abroad voted against their own suffrage recently, but most Italians voted to keep it or something?

quote:

In 2016, a constitutional referendum was held in order to change the Constitution of Italy. The proposed constitution, put forward by the then Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, would eliminate the seats assigned to the overseas constituencies in the Senate of the Republic.[2] Almost 60% of voters voted against the constitutional reform, which therefore was rejected, and Renzi tendered his resignation. However, Italians living abroad voted the opposite way (with 65% saying 'yes'),[3] thus asking to eliminate their own seats in the Senate.

Anyway how can I vote for the ghost of the Italian socialisti?

Oh I almost forgot: the communist party was successfully destroyed by cold war anti-communism, but what about the socialist party? Well, they were so notoriously, comically corrupt that for decades the word "socialist" was literally used as a synonym of "thieving". Not that they were any worse than other political parties of the time, as the Tangentopoli scandal pretty much wiped the slate clean, discrediting an entire generation of politicians and parties... and creating a power vacuum that was promptly filled by Berlusconi

They must be doing something right, too, as one of their people was stabbed by fascists

OK, a little background. Italian leftists have little to no political representation. All leftist politicians have either been rolled into the neoliberal Democratic Party (e.g. my city's former mayor, promptly replaced with a suit better aligned with the party's authoritarian ideals), or they have switched sides completely - to name two dramatic examples, former Italian communists include xenophobic populist Salvini and theocon Ferrara. Most leftist action is therefore "extra-parliamentary", and since the end of red terrorism, typically takes the form of self-managed initiatives: cultural, sports and entertainment events, fundraisers, free or cheap education and training, "people's" gyms and restaurants, and so on. Invariably, these are held at community centers: both "legitimate" clubs, typically part of the ARCI national association, and illegal squats [non-leftist popular initiatives can count on a third kind of venue: Catholic church property]

Sounds good so far? Well, the problem is, basically nobody in Italy knows. "Centro sociale" ("social/community center") is a dirty word, they're where long haired commie kids go to do drugs and... do drugs. And organize protests. And do drugs. I believed this bullshit myself for years, even if it doesn't make sense

So, whenever anything leftist happens in Italy, good or bad, it's those centro sociale people with their... drugs. And ever since the Genoa G8 introduced the term to the general public, they're considered interchangeable with "the black bloc" - yes, Italian media uses the term as if it describes a specific group. This provides a handy template to instantly and easily 1: dismiss any grassroots leftist initiative, 2: criminalize any protest that hasn't received the blessing of the Democratic Party and 3: dismiss fascist attacks on activists

It's late and this is getting long, so I'll stop here. I'll post examples, but for now, you know how the news of this stabbing (and the many other clashes between leftists and fascists that are happening lately) is going to be received by the general public
