I’m early 20s so I’m definitely still in my hooping prime. To help my shot I’ve been doing a lot more shoulder workouts and more cardio just so I can still have my stamina when I really run for more than four games

The weather hasn’t gotten better yet so it’s still not great to go outside and get shots up. Need the summer and fast

Young goon I strongly suggest you find yourself a decent indoor court so you can save yourself a little bit of the pain and annoyances of outdoor ball. As bad as my knees are, I'd probably be unable to play now if I spent the last 10 years balling outside.

Also, are there any Boston area people looking for an indoor pickup group?

Yeah I don't know the NYC scene very well. I'm probably moving back to Philly sometime this year and one of the biggest things I'll miss is my free access to indoor courts.

I’m actually located in Jersey! And tbh I’ve got access to a couple of different indoor courts and my gym has one. I like using the one at my college since we’re D1 and the gym’s been renovated a few times. My only problem is I teach so I’ve got a really limited amount of time in between class and doing all this work

Honestly I didn’t even realize that outdoor ball would take a toll on my knees as I got older, so I’ll definitely keep that in mind as I go on

Concrete is very bad for the knees it has no cushion and puts all the pressure on your joints

Seeing the pickup ball thread always makes me sad as an Aussie. We have no pickup scene here at all that I'm aware of. I always get jealous of you guys just being able to walk into a gym and find a game. Even more so that you actually have hoops in every other gym. We have to go to specialised basketball stadiums and even then, they're almost always booked out for someone playing badminton or indoor soccer or some poo poo.

I wore Kyrie 2s for hoops last summer, but the tread on those died an honorable death by the end. I'm in the market for a new outdoor shoe, and I'm torn between getting a pair of Harden 2s or something else. I'm not concerned by the cost since I can get them with my job's discount

Yea I've never had a jumpshot or a handle. I've always survived purely on my athleticism, by cleaning the glass and playing hard defense. That type of game does not age well. Especially after numerous ankle injuries :(

Adapting has its own stages of grief, but it's mostly just "denial." I've been there, it sucks. The rebounding on my rec league team dropped off a lot after our top rebounder suffered an ankle sprain after diving for a rebound, of all things. Realized I can still be an aggressive rebounder by boxing out better and trying to keep myself between anyone else and the bucket.

Tonight I played with a carpal tunnel brace to keep my off-hand wrist from moving thanks to my forearm tendinitis and I shot far better than normal, partly because my off hand wasn't pushing the ball off line for once. I might have to keep wearing this thing even after my arm heals!

How did you all work on your weak side/weak handed(?) driving layups? For me, I'll drive to the right and then come to a complete stop before putting up a jumping set shot right near the basket instead of something cooler like a finger roll.

Sounds like he has a problem with the approach too, try doing the steps without trying to shoot, like put out your left foot out first, dribble then take the 2 steps and jump off your left. Oh, and try to alternate sides even if you can do the other side just fine, that way you start switching more naturally instead of going into a very obvious 'going right' mode. Once you get the approach down you can even finish with your left if you wish, but I really recommend you get shooting with the right down, it's very useful, specially in pickup.

I've rolled my left ankle a million times, and had a really bad one like what you're describing back in December. Looked at the bottoms of my old shoes and, while the right one had a ton of wear near the big toe, the left one had almost none. That told me that my mechanics are just hosed up on my left side, so I went ahead and splurged for this: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B009325WFY

Same ones that Steph plays in. It's actually really comfortable and non-restrictive, and I now feel much less dread about having to retire from basketball (I'm also 30)

I think it really comes down to repetition and putting hours in to practice. It'll feel alien at first but you just have to stick with it. I got a pretty late start with basketball in general (around the age of 17) so everything felt awkward for awhile. It wasn't till maybe 3-4 years ago (I'm 33 now) that I started making an effort to get my left hand more comfortable. This past year I've had shoulder issues with my right arm so I've been forced to train up my left anyway. I've found that even little things like running to a court with a bball in my left hand can go a long way with my muscle memory.

I'm at the point where there are some finesse finishes I can do left that I was never even capable with my dominant hand.

The point of my story is that if I can do it at the age of 30, literally any able bodied person can if they try.

I've had a bizarre week of ankle rolls. I twice rolled my left ankle on the same night. The first time was worse than the second, but both weren't severe compared to any real sprains I've had. Yet a few nights later, I started feeling some concerning pain in my right ankle whereas my left feels completely fine. I started wearing an ankle bracer today just as a precaution.

I went back to my old shooting form and am shooting much, much better now. I tried adjusting my shot to be a little more traditional, but all it did was make me think a lot about my shot when I would shoot. Immediately after switching back, I felt way more confident and now I can knock in 3s and get to the rim well.

Well, the most important part is making it, really. Even if I changed my shot recently, there wasn't anything technically wrong with it, it's just a form that hits the back of the rim a lot if you don't put plenty strength into it to give it a nice arch, and I'm currently weak as hell so it doesn't suit me. People are more aware because we've had an NBA season with several garbage jumper rookies, but even Lonzo's slingshot dominated HS, and that's about the highest level you'll see on a pickup court, really. I even saw one time some old guy who literally did granny jump shots, but he still made em because he had the sense to only do them really open.

Is there a consensus on bobbling the ball when catching a pass? Specifically, it hits your hand, you don't secure it as it bounces to the floor and then you grab it to secure possession. Can you now dribble or should it be called a double dribble?

RCarr
Dec 24, 2007

Your dribble can only start after you have possession of the ball, so in that case you are free to dribble once you gain control.

It always weirds me out when people get super aggro with trash talk. Like if I talk poo poo by all means get me back, it's basically an unspoken agreement, but don't act like we're playing in Bed Stuy Do or Die and that there's a 50/50 chance I have a piece in my bag.

At the risk of sounding glib - just play?

One of my games has one woman who regularly plays...other than her team always being shirts there's no real difference. It's a neighborhood open gym, but the games are pretty high level. There are definitely people both better and worse than her. It's the same for my other game that's less public. One or two women who do fine.

If folks are going to be jerks about playing coed they're probably going to be jerks about calls and undercutting and other stuff and won't be much fun to play with anyway.

To be fair, I'm in the pacific northwest now and the games I used to play in Texas had more stereotypical gym banter, but even in that game there was a woman who eventually played pro ball in europe who would show up sometimes and people would be on slightly better behavior while she was around.

Like everything else relating to pickup there's probably good groups and bad groups and you may just have to feel them out.

This is the first I've heard of POSE running. I just did some reading and watched a couple of videos. Is this a legit thing now, with science backing it up? I've never been a great runner, especially with my clumsy flat feet. I think the only good that's come of this is that I rarely do any crazy athletic movements and have avoided major joint injuries my entire adult life. This POSE stuff seems out of left field from everything I've known.

Re: Co-Ed games, there was this 5'3 former girl's high school basketball player who came to some of my group's games for awhile last year. She was legit enough that she knocked down the vast majority of her open jump shots and was fit as heck to constantly run the floor and cut to the rim. At first, a lot of guys played her really soft, but as that started leading to losses, people started realizing they had to play her seriously. It wasn't a problem for long.

The main thing? She became a regular for awhile which legitimized her presence for even the most conservative players. As long as you show how serious you are and keep up a good attitude, I think most normal people would be accepting. The people who aren't, are probably jerks anyway.

I honestly don't know how well accepted it is or whether it's scientific at all, but thinking about where my feet were striking and doing the poo poo in the book helped me a lot, I'd never been able to just run a few miles without discomfort till I did it. Of course that was also the first time I actually considered running as a skill so it was probably that as much as the book itself.

I have flat feet and increased my speed a lot just from changing running technique, but I have the variety that forms an arc when you're on your toes so it's probably easier.

Ah, it's been a long time. I actually stopped playing to try to rehabilitate my injuries, and reinjured it like usual, but good news! it made a lot of a difference, since I healed, I'm moving around much better. As for pickup, seems like it's on a weird stage, where people are copying the NBA's current playstyle, but the defense hasn't caught up to it, and it's just a ton of really open 3s with no one challenging them. It should be my time to shine since defending jumpshots is the only thing I'm actually good at on defense, but often I'm the only one who can rebound on the team, so it takes me out of it. And my rebounding hasn't been doing that great lately, my old style of just boxing people out of the way when I was heavier doesn't quite work, and again, boxing out just doesn't help that much when no one else is going for boards, gotta move around more.

Defense is as frustrating as ever but it's finally clicking I feel, as much as I love blocking shots, it's just not good defense, and I don't jump high enough or recover fast enough anymore to make up for it, saw an old man destroy a 2-1 fast break moving just enough and got inspired. Challenging and going for the defensive board works just fine (though I will still try to block anyone that annoys me I guess)
