Arsonide posted:One of my favorite space strategy games was Sword of the Stars (the first one, I never played the second one). In that game, there were like six or seven races and they all had unique interstellar propulsion mechanics, and that was what made them interesting to me. There was a race that had no FTL at all, just slowboating between stars and building gates. There was a race that used the star network thing we have in Stellaris now. There was a race that drilled their own star network lanes. There was a race that could move wherever they want at a slower pace. There was a race that could move faster in large groups. Anyway, this excited me about the first release of Stellaris, I liked that aspect and I liked it in Stellaris. I liked - was it the space dolphins? They moved in a long series of tiny teleportations, stuttering across the stars.

Is there like a little collection of empire builds somewhere I can look at? I've tried googling and I haven't found anything that's quite what I want. Just some advice about race design? I realise it's not that hard of a game necessarily and you can just do roleplay stuff but I want to see other people's ideas.

I'm having such a nice time with this game, bumbling along on easy settings, no idea what I'm doing. It's all new to me. Galactic council? Sounds awesome! Just made buddies with a species that likes dry worlds so I can finally colonise these stupid deserts all over my space. Learning about psionics! I'm sure nothing bad can come of that! Everything is lovely when you pick that adorable little big-eyed lizard species portrait. Even the species next door that keeps trying to hate me loves me because I bombard them with envoys.

There's a sale going now and I'm thinking I'm going to go with the Ascension pack which seems to be basically every major DLC up to and including Megacorp. I figured I can pick up Federations and Nemesis later if I really like the game. Any recommendations for a lets play or tutorial series on youtube or elsewhere to get my feet wet on understanding some of the mechanics I would have? Is there a "start in Ireland" type of thing a new player should do? I learned quite a lot watching Colorsfade Gaming but he's very, very slow-paced.

I made the most benevolent, adorable race of little fennec fox people to play when I just want to feel comforted and I set the game to super-easy and just bimble around reading all the event texts. There's room in Stellaris for all kinds of gaming. It's really great for 'what if Klingons, but capitalist' or 'what if Vorta, but weirdly aggressive' and you can play out just about any scifi concept you can think of.

In terms of 'is the game as hard as it looks' - no, not really. If in doubt, put the difficulty options down low and just sort of roleplay it. Read all the text, make decisions based on story. You don't need to optimise at low levels. You can worry about that stuff when you have hours in the game and know what you're doing.
