The denouement to Thursdays episode was insanely cool and all, but it really highlighted the one big failing that Matt has a GM, insofar as CR is concerned obviously, IMO. Namely that whenever something like that is happening, he actively doesn't let anyone do anything. In this case I'm thinking more about the stuff in the High Richter's mansion; he just had this minor character setpiece ready and once it started, it might has well have been an actual non-interactive cutscene for all the difference it wouldn't have made. Laura was the only one who even trued to do something when Dayana was talking, sure, but even then his response was "you didn't have it readied beforehand, so you don't have time" and just... kept going with the predetermined script. When Laura DID get to do something afterwards, it failed but even if it succeeded it wouldn't have mattered or changed anything at that point anyway. Part of it is necessary because its a show that needs to stick to rigid time constraints and all, but they pretend its just pure actual play regardless and it works more often than not. I dunno, it might just be me, but those moments were the illusion shatters stand out even more because in every other situation his response is always that they can try to do something. NowonSA posted:So many fun moments from that Grog game, but one quick highlight to further incentivize people to check it out: I am a Unicorn. There can only be one. It was a fantastic character beat on its own merits, but even better was that before Scanlan had his moment in the episode, Sam was acting all excited like he had something cool planned and couldn't wait to get to it. Then AFTER, he was just sat there looking mopey, like he knew he just sabotaged any chance to play for a long while and was maybe regretting it.. And then the end of the exact same episode hits and the rest of the party go to Ank'Harel, have a chance meeting with someone who appears to be a semi-important NPC from the description and... bam, Sam just slams down a new character sheet and everyone freaks the gently caress out. It's probably one of my favourite episodes, period.

In It For The Tank posted:Only Sam recognized the big picture but his clutch feeblemind wasn't enough because even after that everyone still didn't fight Keyleth so she was able to just waltz to victory by virtue of her archetype's broken capstone. The entire thing ended up being a huge slog. It's not really so much that it's inherently broken, but rather that it was both used outright incorrectly the entire time (you can't switch from one form to another immediately; you need to revert to your base form and then change shape again in the next round, like normal) and she was allowed to keep using it after the Feeblemind because ????

Zeratanis posted:This whole thing though, god drat. To me it just seems like Orion sees the others getting attention for specific details of their characters and just goes "hey me too!" Grog is the one who holds the bag of holding, oh, I'll get one myself! Everybody loves Trinket, oh, I'll get my own pet! Vax is dagger dagger dagger, time to use daggers with telekinesis(his obsession with that loving spell is another on its own)! Scanlan is a goofy rear end pervert and people love it, time to make my own comment! Oops shame you aren't a charming person whose been doing it for years at that point and knows the line and when not to cross it, idiot. Maybe I'm looking way too into it? The point is he's such a sour point on an otherwise great thing. The mirror thing that was brought up before sorta plays into that as well. Percy invented stuff, and he wanted a giant glass lens to use against the Briarwoods because we knew at that point that Cylas was a vampire IIRC. That didn't pan out, so Orion decided to try and get a gajillion tiny mirrors instead to create his own Archimedes' death ray. It was never made explicit that it was for that purpose, but given the context at the time it was pretty obvious to like everyone watching that's what he was gonna do with 'em.

Right, but the smut was explicitly a front for something else. He was just looking for spellbooks and wasn't interested in the porn itself, which is why he gave it away so readily and even disposed of some in a bakery.

CuwiKhons posted:God knows I am. I know it's still early on in the party's existence (they've known each other for what? Like two or three weeks?) but I'm starting to be really over Nott and Caleb being their own separate entity from the rest of the group and not sharing information or items unless they feel like it. I think part of it as well is that they've frequently had long conversations about teamwork, working together and Caleb and Nott have always ended up agreeing to it. And then it comes to putting that into practice and every time, they immediately backpedal back to their initial stance and keep stuff hidden and secret until called on it. Even mundane small things. It can be a good character beat and insight into them as people and all, but it's just a really lovely way to act as a player in general and it's not good to watch in a show like this either.

Probably, but it does really make me wonder what their plan is for when Laura's off being a mom and all. In C1, Pike being gone for extended periods wasn't really a big deal because other people had healing spells, which they seem to put a lot of stock in to the point that Laura outright called Healing Word the worst spell for it despite it being objectively the best. Here, it seems to be all up to Jester.

He was gonna try to make an Archimedes Death Ray, because, well, Silas was a vampire and all. Percy also tried to make something similar earlier and failed.

There's also the fairly recent (and short!) Jocks Machina one-shot that was run by 5e Designer and Noted Bad GM Mike Mearls. His books like Priest and Thief etc. are all parts of some grand narrative in which... a generic D&D party is formed. Each book supposedly focuses on the titular job class character getting introduced and eventually joining the party or something. I really don't get it.

The OP for that thread includes Thrilling Intent, which is fantastic but really showcases just how broad the things they're cool with are. That still technically counts as "actual play" in the most literal sense, but you sure wouldn't know it from the show, since it's effectively just animated long-form improv.
