Twice on the show we see martian officers pop a pill that seems to give them tremendous factual recall and extreme sensory acuity. Is that in the books at all, and is what they're taking explained?

IIRC they mention some kind of focus enhancing drug that the Martian interrogator on the Donnager takes during the interrogation, but that's about it. There are other characters with performance enhancing neurochems, but they're not popping pills, and I don't think those pills show up elsewhere.

I don't really know if they will. They aren't really important in the subsequent books and there's a lot of trimming to do to fit everything into the last few episodes.

Sure they are. They're the reason she could do 80% of her bullshit in book 3. They're the reason she has to be in hyperjail a mile underground later on, and they're a major part of her character in the most recent book. Although being a big part of book 7 may not matter seeing as even if the show hadn't got cancelled I doubt they would have made it that far anyways.

The overlapping combat-monster plot role of Amos, Bobbie, and Clarissa could probably be streamlined down for future use. The show has demonstrated a willingness to go different routes often enough that we can't rely on it, I think.

Honestly, by how often cast and crew are talking about how nice everyone is, I doubt they will kill Diogo because they won't want to fire the actor.

Speaking of characters who die... Bull doesn't look to be showing up at all does he?

I think Naomi is kind of going to take his role, not as security, but as the main person who organises the Belter mutiny. Which leaves Drummer as the Sam equivalent?

There's a grizzled older dude showing up in this episode, and mentioned in the summaries that I assume is going to be show Bull. How much like his book character and role he will be is an open question.

I thought that would be show Ashford. Drummer as Pa makes way more sense. I kind of forgot she was on the Behemoth.

So Naomi could be fulfilling the Bull and Sam role.

That was pretty good ending.

Interesting how the dynamic is shifted around with Drummer and the first officer (I didn't catch his name, was it the same as the captain in the book?). I figured drummer would be Pa but I didn't think they would reverse the chain of command.

Him not saying the line is fine IMO -- he's clearly still in the confused not-all-together state. He can show up and spout gibberish a little and make it even more impactful when he has a proper conversation.

I didn't like that the ring Did a Thing though. Like, it goes translucent when the guy hits. In the book doesn't it not react at all but the pod doesn't come out the other side? Doesn't play on TV, I guess.

I think the fact that it hits a visible "wall" also helps to illustrate that it's suddenly decelerating (and that everyone by the ring can see what's happening; I forget how they know about the deceleration thing in the book).

I think they just had his datastream from the ship showing the deceleration, but it's been a while.

IIRC you can't 'see' though a ring into the slow zone but can the opposite way

I found the show first, then picked up the books last year after gorging though the two Seasons when I just had to have MOAR Expanse. I find the TV changes fascinating. There is all sorts of stuff I can't wait to see how they will adapt. The time passage between book 2 & 3 they did in this episode was I thought subtle and really well done. The Behemoth has characters and their dynamics all jumbled up, but it looks like all the elements are still present. It is going to be really fun watching how all that comes together.

Collateral
Feb 17, 2010

I have been thinking how they can adapt books 4-7 (if it gets picked up by the big river corp).

They only really need Holden to take the Roci on escort duty to Ilus (NewTerra)*, perhaps with Bobbi and Prax. The other three could take extended leave while he is away.

When he gets there they have a truncated CB plot, there is an alien ship yard, a time dilation device* and other artifacts which Miller/Investigator activates very early on, leading to the plot beats of Nemesis Games. Only there is another Tachi class corvette from MCRN on escort as well.

As the Roci is approaching the Ilus gate to the slow zone, it is passed by the rogue MCRN fleet. They are told to leave this system, which is now called *Laconia.

The Roci goes through with the Barkeith being the last rogue to go the other way. Soon after the gate actually closes.

Babylon's Ashes and Persepolis Rising can similarly by merged, without the time jump obviously. As the Free Navy ships get chomped by the gatespace kraken, the Laconia gate reopens with Gathering Storm and Heart of the Tempest coming through.

The Laconians have experienced 30+ years during the period the gate was shut due the time dilation device Holden handed over to the Martians.

The last 2 books could be adapted into a last season, perhaps two if they are super dense. I think books 4-7 could easily be condensed to two seasons.

Just some thoughts...

*Re: the time dilation device is central to Murtry going to war with the colonists, eventually Holden works with MCRN commander (who is part of the mutiny), to keep it safe.

e: expanded the Time Dilation Device, so that it gives better motivation for Murtry and doesn't come out of left field.

You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance.

See, my thought was that they merge the Cibola Burn protomolecule stuff into the initial exploration of the ring gates and the slow zone. The stuff where Holden and Miller are exploring the old structures on Ilus can really just be folded into Holden's exploration of the station at the center of the slow zone. The stuff from that book with the colonists and the security force on the planet was nice worldbuilding, but none of it really matters to the protomolecule/intersystem politics plotline that takes center stage. And yeah, it's kinda hard for a TV show to sideline half of its main cast for entire season.

I like the idea of time dilation in Laconia rather than the thirty-year time skip, though. I remember being kinda frustrated to pick up the last book and see that okay, literally nothing has changed, the Roci crew has just been flying around, doing missions and running in place for thirty years without any change in the characters. None of the interpersonal issues they had in the first few books ever amounted to anything, and there isn't any opportunity for new problems between the crew now because man, they've been running happily for thirty years, they should be pretty well used to eachother. Those hints at a relationship between Bobbie and Alex? Nothing happened, and nothing's ever going to happen if it hasn't by now.
