As the year goes on, we move closer and closer to 𝓜𝓾𝓮𝓵𝓵𝓮𝓻 𝓣𝓲𝓶𝓮!

Meanwhile, the ongoing action by Stormy Daniels and her pitbull lawyer Avanetti gathers momentum even as Mueller gets more and more indictments. Confused...? I know I am... If you're not sure what the legal picture is Andrew Torez and esteemed lawyer Thomas Smith have a pod-cast that like most things at the moment is increasingly devoting time to sorting out just what the gently caress is happening.
You can find a description and links to each episode at their site "Opening Arguments". You might mind that the mirror hosted at overcast is better for low bandwidth or mobile users. How the Clock-Drawing Test Is Administered

The clinician (often a doctor, psychologist, or social worker) gives the person being tested a piece of paper with a pre-drawn circle on it and asks him to draw the numbers on the clock.

She then tells him to draw the hands to show a specific time. There are several different times that people who administer this test may use, but many choose 10 minutes after 11.

Additional research identified six features in this test that were important in successfully identifying problems in cognition. These were described as critical clock-drawing errors and included the wrong time, no hands, missing numbers, number substitutions, repetition, and refusal. These researchers concluded that these six errors were predictive in identifying dementia based on the clock-drawing test. Notice that simply refusing to complete the test can be indicative of a problem.

@JohnJHarwood (John Harwood, CNBC, New York Times): Has a lot of sources in the Republican Party and was the first to report on Paul Manafort leaving the Trump campaign in August 2016.
@daveweigel (Dave Weigel, Bloomberg Politics, formerly Slate): "Idiosyncratic libertarian" journalist who is second only to Robert Costa in connections/interviews with Republican officials. Contrary to popular belief, not D&D superstar Joementum.
@BruceBartlett (Bruce Bartlett, ex-Reagan/Bush official): "Lifelong conservative who now thinks the GOP panders to fools, whom he calls wankers. My tweets should not always be taken seriously."

Please don't be a Covok (i.e. a doomsaying jerk). Being terrified by how things are is healthy. Constantly and exclusively posting about things being awful forever is not only low-content, it's using the suffering of others as an excuse to get attention while lashing out at others for not being miserable like you. And certainly don't take glee in claiming things won't matter.

Also, don't engage uglycat. Whether he's mentally ill or not, he's insufferable and wastes everyone's time.

Don't be awful about Barron Trump. He's eleven years old. Every other Trump family member is fair, but let Barron be a kid for just a small bit. In general, just leave people's kids out of it.

Don't try to be the tone police. Trump supporters constantly make death threats and vomit hate speech. It's okay to be assholes to them. In fact, it's your patriotic duty.

The dog rule may be dead, but dog pictures are always appreciated.

Saying "nothing matters" is useless or worse. By posting it you're either being an rear end in a top hat because you support awful people and don't want them punished, or you're letting depression make you into a loser by trying to inflict it on others.

Don't put stroking your own ego about how pure you are over actual electoral and policy success. You feeling nice about never compromising doesn't keep disenfranchised people from dying.

Things are not normal. Stop pretending they are. Stop criticizing people for being rightfully afraid, or for taking steps to protect themselves.

An individual minority or woman being an awful person who enables Republicans is not an excuse to be a bigoted or sexist piece of poo poo. I thought this went without saying. skylined! puts it well here:

tl;dr: The Liberia experiment sorta did work, in that the returned slaves went all Andrew Jackson on the indigenous Liberians, wrote in their constitution that only black people can be citizens or own property, and every president until 1980 was a descendant of ex-slaves and never a native Liberian.

The Liberia experiment sorta did work, just not in the way that we appreciate today. The folks that got settled were called the "Congo people": black freemen, former slaves, and in some cases people off of intercepted slave-ships who'd never gotten to the Americas.

I'm simplifying, but the Congos got to Liberia and pretty shortly started using their superior position, weapons, and American backing to attack the indigenous Liberians. I was going to say "enslave" because that was my understanding, but some googling tells me that slavery was banned there from the get-go, so I'll just say "caused the indigenous Liberians to labor for them under sub-optimal conditions." They steadily grew the country by seizing tribal land, since Liberia was much smaller at the start. Basically, the Congos did to Liberia what white people did to North America, so you can draw some Israel/Palestine parallels there in terms of past experience informing future experience.

Oh, and taking their cue from past experience, the Congos required voters to be (legal not tribal) private landowners, disenfranchising most of the indigenous Liberians. And fascinatingly enough their Constitution requires that to be a citizen or own property in Liberia, a person must be "of Negro blood". So the Lebanese and Indians expatriates who "own" properties in Liberia do so by funding a Liberian friend/employee to buy and own the property, with the unwritten understanding (probably backed by threats) that the expat will be the de facto but not de jure owner.

I worked in Liberia for a small company, and when we were thinking about buying a housing/office space, we briefly considered bringing my American cousin (his dad is black and married my aunt) over to Liberia to "own" the property and "rent" it to the company.

The Congos ended up basically ruling Liberia despite being a small minority, and every single president of Liberia was a Congo until 1980 when Doe (an ethnic Krahn) pulled a coup and seized power. He gets overthrown, and eventually tortured and murdered in front of news cameras while an insurgent general sips a (shudder) Bud Light while watching Doe's ears get cut off.

I'm getting into the weeds, but the point is that "repatriating" former slaves to Liberia was effective in that it got them a techically-democratic state, run by black people and never colonized by white people even during the Scramble for Africa, and under the minority-rule of the Congos themselves.

EDIT: This is kinda weird, but there's almost a Rhodesia/South Africa parallel where certain people wistfully say "yeah, too bad about Liberia, used to be a really nice country, you know, before..." It wasn't a rich country from 1820-1980, but it was relatively peaceful once they got done busting heads, and much like Rhodesia, if you were in the ruling minority it was a great place to live, and yet further like Rhodeisa the ex-ruling minority would be happy to tell you how much better things were for those ungrateful majorities in the "old days".

So, I am heavily pulling over some commentary elsewhere discussing the potential impact of the Stormy Daniels lawsuit. In this case, a bestof'd /r post involving the podcast Opening Arguments.

quote:

Her suit asks the court to decide whether a contract requiring her silence is valid. The contract is anonymized, meaning that both parties in the contract are referred to by pseudonyms (Stormy is PP and Trump is allegedly DD).

This leaves Trump with two options:

1. Deny that he is DD. This means that Stormy is fully within her rights to release all of the photos and text messages that Trump denied the existence of. These were apparently damning enough to merit $130,000 in hush money.

2. Assert that he is DD and is entitled to all the protections in the contract. While this might prevent her from releasing the material, it will essentially confirm (a) that he and/or Michael Cohen committed campaign finance violations and (b) that they set up LLCs to conceal crimes.

The podcast obviously covers the topic with much more nuance and spends much more time on the implications. Highly recommended.

The other important point they make is that Fox News will try to frame this all as salacious tabloid fodder. So, everyone else needs to remind the public that this is a president committing campaign finance violations to conceal criminal acts. Messaging is important.

I guess I've posted a few times in the anime section about my excursion into that genre. But, it just occurred to me that I literally paid to register here without even exploring anywhere else.

Is there anywhere else on here worth exploring? Do I need to don protection when venturing out of the safe confines of the Trump thread?

Don't go to GBS, know that outside of this thread in DnD the main goal of all DnD threads is to tell you how bad Democrats are.

I like PYF, they have a lot of fun topics.

Any of the sub communities are good if you like the topic.

I don't expect any trouble, but we'll be handing these out later...

I just posted an effortpost in the old thread, damned if I'm going to lose it.

I spend 99% of my time on SA either in D&D or the Games forums.

Seriously, to you, and everyone else providing recommendations: thanks.

I've only been registered here for a month or so and only lurked for a few months prior to that. Despite a weird addiction to message boards and message board-like things that goes back to Usenet, I was mostly unaware of this place's existence until recently.

So, for real, thanks for the suggestions. And any more to come. I won't derail this any further.
