It's pretty unlikely they're cloning random peoples phones but it wouldn't be some huge feat of technical wizardry. Pretty soon there will probably be a simple TSA-friendly box with the most common phone cables hanging out to which they'll connect your device, click either the "iphone" or "Android" button, and off it'll go automatically uploading an image to that giant building in Utah.

I once lost my Leatherman for a few months but then the TSA helpfully found it for me in the bottom of one of my bags I was all happy and blurted out "gently caress, that's where that was" and they let me run back and check it with my luggage.
