the only thing that stops me from doing this is the worry that 5 years in ill get rear end cancer, have no insurance, and die. gotta at least save up enough to pay for insurance

this kind of thing sounded really rad to me until one of my uncles tried it and rapidly discovered if he ever left the house to like, buy groceries or anything the neighbors would instantly rob it

guys ripped the dang copper out of the walls after he spent like two weeks out of town and lol if you think hick nowhere cops are gonna give a poo poo

living on your own way out in the country would be nice if you were ever actually on your own

my dad had a hunting camp at one point

at one point some new guy moved into the area and camps started being broken into. mostly city people's who only came up to hunt, but people were pissed cause he was also doing dumb poo poo like leave doors open so weather and animals get in which was viewed as a dick move even when robbing city folks.

one day the guy everyone knew was doing it came back and his house after a hunting trip out of town and well had been blown up with friggin dynamite. (this was back when you could be like "uhhh i have a... uhhh... tree stump" and buy the poo poo with cash if it was under a certain amount)

weirdly nobody heard or saw anything

he moved away

Wyden is definitely way better than the average Dem Senator but the ways in which he’s good are different from Bernie.

And in terms of a potential presidential bid- have you listened to him speak? His oratorical skills are a definite liability.

I haven't heard him speak to a large crowd, no.

And to be clear I do not think he's some kind of socialist wunderkind, but if the Republicans are smart and put up some weirdo libertarian rather than doubling down on the Nazi poo poo, he'd make a much easier to stomach compromise candidate than Biden or Dick Suckerberg.

there's certainly no shortage of worse places in America but how much appetite do you have for slices of whitebread dyed in all the colors of the rainbow?

sf is the actual worst place in America. if those are your choices, move to chicago, it's at least unpleasant in a way that'll make for good stories later

is sf unpleasant even if you're the gilded elite tech bro computer toucher?

i spent a few summers there and the only thing i disliked was COL (I was in school so I was trying to save :10bux: and not going out much)

if you're an elite computer toucher who could actually have a reasonable life there you can also make a nice life for yourself in any city you choose with minimal effort, it's not like there's any shortage of companies hiring programmers and poo poo even in the most dead-end towns. If you're not working a prestige job for Google and getting bussed into town you're living in a mushroomy basement apartment whose doors and windows get buried in the trash your upstairs neighbors toss out the window, getting chased by the screaming one-shoe methhead every time you go outside.

i've floundered a little after grad school and lack practical experience so i think doing a year or two tour will be needed to establish my skills + network, then i can pivot to a better city
