Speaking of classes, my friend and I just picked up the game and I was wondering if there are any particular combinations of classes that we should avoid as being a slog in a duo.

We always play coop games as a duo in a private server because we're bullshitting about life on discord voice chat in the background while playing, resulting in a pretty slow, distractible, loving around and laughing about finding out play style that rightfully drives randoms up a wall.

Yeah as another new player I agree. The game would really benefit from a touch more handholding at first to introduce you to the key mechanics.

But then again just throwing you into the deep end without any real explanation really fits with the company ethos you see in the training cave and every mission start/finish. The dwarf puts the Morkite in the bin or else it's left behind again.

And if Management can screw you out of a performance bonus they will, turn in your secondary objectives before hopping in the pod!!!

Also there's a drop point on the side of the drop pod so unless poo poo is really going bad or you're scrambling to beat the time you've got a spot to unload your booty.

Makes sense. We had a hacking pod drop in a smallish crevasse right up against a wall so Hack-C spawned essentially in the wall, and at one point a praetorian also spawned between the pod and the wall.

Enjoyed a point extractions game with a buddy the other day where we got too preoccupied with taking out a grabber to notice that the mining rig was incoming. He was ever so slightly nearer to it than me and got downed, it was allllmost a 15 second mission.

So, what does a new player need to know? And do you guys use keyboard and mouse, or controller? I like both, so no real preference myself, but some games are balanced around controller usage?

If you see a bunch of chips or blobs of a different color on the surface of the dirt try digging. If the chips/blobs are also in the dirt (and not just on the surface) there's something buried there.

If that something is a big chunk of gold or a bright pink crystal it is tradition for everyone to stand around it and use the laser pointer on it in excitement over how much money was just found.

Press V a lot. Whenever you do something cool, whenever someone else does something that looked cool, whenever you fight off a swarm, whenever you go splat and get revived, whatever. Just V it up.

I swear my autocannon has a hidden mod that lets it act as a targeting laser for my friend's PGL. Me getting started in on a good chunk of grunts only for a grenade to come flying in from across the drat room and instantly delete them all happens too frequently to be a coincidence.

I only pop lootbugs when they are in a spot where the minerals won't fly everywhere or we are very close to being able to afford a resupply.

Or there is like ten of them congregated in a crater and I have a grenade in which case how could you not?

Two player is a lot of fun.

There will be times where you will say "drat this would be easy if one of us was a ______" so if that sort of thing rubs you the wrong way then it might not be for you. For my friend and I we just see it as a fun challenge, like built-in puzzles. you also know exactly who is to blame for calling Molly away right when you are getting ready to deposit.

Heightened senses is a good perk to have because a cave leech can totally wipe the team, and Friendly is less useful because there's just fewer other players running around to accidentally hit.

Just tie the dwarf on top of Molly like the heartstone.

Mined an absurd amount of nitra onto the ground in a refining mission only for a swarm to come in. When I remembered to go back to pick it up there was a loot bug party and all the nitra was gone.

While that would be amazing it feels like there's not enough lingering friendly fire potential to be a true driller primary.

Maybe electrify the whole thing with a hold down secondary fire which lobs the unbroken flak cartridge UT99 style with remote detonation on release that covers an area (and enemies/dwarfs) in electrified bits.

Shifty Pony

I feel like a simple horde mode would be kinda against the spirit of the game since there's the implication that there's no coming back.

I could see a tower defense type deal where you guard a drilling rig that runs until it is destroyed (which wipes bugs heartstone explosion style), with the returns getting greater the longer it runs. Have it hit a nitra vein every now and then for resupply and punch through to a new level regularly to keep the room from turning into one giant crater.

Saw someone on Reddit claim that you don't want to mine until your bag is full because the game has some sort of rounding if the last hit that fills the bag is close enough to the amount needed to fill. Like if you had 43 in the bag and there was was 2.6 morkite in the last hit the game will just delete the 0.6, but if your bag was already full it would drop a 2.6 chunk.

Could be bullshit but also could explain what's going on in the DD where some people get enough but others don't.

Trying to ice spear patrol bots sounds like a great way to run out of ammo after the 2nd bot. Stick to the flamethrower.

edit: Since I page sniped, I'll ask this question again: Some old internet guides suggested using Ice spear vs Oppressors, saying you can shoot them when frozen. I have *never* been able to get the OC to do anything near that, as the windup period stops normal fire and is longer than the Opressor's freeze duration. Tips?

Spray the ground under the oppressor at the very end of your freeze. The timer for creatures to begin warming doesn't start until they are no longer receiving cold damage, and the ice trail the Cryo cannon leaves behind on surfaces does a few seconds of (minor) cold damage to whatever is on it.

At least that's my understanding, it certainly seems to help extending the freeze significantly.

I hate the sand caverns because it is the only biome that I've had the drop pod position itself with the ramp hanging off into a giant chasm so that I absolutely could not get to it as a driller unless I drilled up into the ceiling and came down right above the ramp.
