They tried in the 80s my third grade math teacher told us at the beginning of the year "everything is changing and when you kids are adults there's gonna be two types of people; those who don't know the metric system, and those with jobs" but after a few weeks all our homework was in imperial units again and someone asked what happened to the metric stuff and he said none of it really mattered
