This show is amazing and I am very loving happy it's back.

I was never too worried about the timeskip and I think they executed it perfectly here. The spent five years developing these characters so well that it's easy to fill in the gaps in a three year skip, like it's easy as hell to infer what a Phillip out of the business would be like in that time, or Elizabeth working double time or Paige continuing to be groomed to be an agent, etc. The only character who really needed much exposition for what happened between was Oleg and imo that was handled just fine.

Really looking forward to how this season develops. Pitting the two against eachother has always seemed like it would be the endgame at some point so I hope they deliver.

That Chekhov's Cyanide Capsule is gna make me nervous all season.

e: I loved the feeling that everyone at the agency seems kind of annoyed Phillip is always there now

I just love how understated it is. They don't go for the flashy 'look it's the 80's!' aesthetic and I've always loved the show for that. Just looks like normal rear end people and homes/etc looked back then.

Double posting but you mentioning her made me remember the moment where Elizabeth is listening to the girls talking to eachother about how hard it is to talk to Stan and Dennis about their jobs b/c they never really tell them anything, and all I could think was how Phillip is basically also one of those FBI wives.

god I love this show

e: ^^ and they don't overdo the references like something like Stranger Things did, which nailed the more laid back and normal aesthetic of the 80s instead of the flashy poo poo, but was always kind of winking and nodding at something

At one point I was sure they'd employ timeskips to have this show end with the wall falling, or something, but in retrospect I'm glad they didn't go that route. Seems too obvious.

Who knows though we may still have another timeskip ahead of us before this season is done.

Uh, from what I saw Elizabeth forced the gun in the General's hand under his chin, and forced him to pull the trigger. Paige wasn't armed, and if she had been, it would've completely invalidated setting the scene up as a suicide.

I took it as him willing to kill himself to maybe kill her, and her barely avoiding it. But yeah it definitely wasn't Paige.

Yeah, it seems like Elizabeth flat out lying to Paige about using sex is something that's gonna come back on her. "Oh, and did I mention that your dad spent a couple of years being another woman's fake husband?"

tbf she seemed to come around on it a little bit, on telling her the truth. Just in a roundabout way.

'Well, when you have to get that close to someone to get or learn something then sometimes you cross a line ...' and her basically admitting 'yeah I've hosed people for work' when Paige asks if she's heard stories of other agents doing it, and Elizabeth saying she isn't in contact with other people and doesn't hear stories.

As much as I like to dunk on the show for how non-existent Henry was for much of the show or how overlooked he was by Phil and Elizabeth, it's paying off in spades this season. The time skip has worked wonders in so many ways.

Plus I think a big part of Stan's becoming suspicious something is up, maybe he was right about these two way back when, is realizing just how little he knows about this man he calls his best friend. And just how little Henry knows about his parents lives before having him. That combined w/ the timing of their running off when this Chicago thing was going down, as well as the myriad other suspicous things about the family over the years, and his clearer, fresher mind due to being at a more lowkey job these past three years is the perfect storm for Stan to start looking at them sideways.

I really hope Kimmy doesn’t show up ever again cause that part was always just so full of cringe. What was the deal with her and Philip anyway? Like Philip’s costume obviously didn’t look like a high school student so he wasn’t trying to pretend to be one right?

Also I’m not really that read up on my USSR history but are we led to believe that Elizabeth is working for people trying to stage a coup/overthrow Gorbachev and Phillip and Oleg are trying to prevent that?

Nah he was a cool older dude who had weed!!

A family walks into a talent agency. It's a father, mother, son, daughter and an assortment of friends. The father says to the talent agent, "We have a really amazing act. You should represent us." The agent says, "Sorry, I don't represent family acts. They're a little too cute." The mother says, "Sir, if you just see our act, we know you would want to represent us." The agent says, "OK. OK. I'll take a look."

At this, the mom and dad call in one of the women accompanying them. The two of them kill her in front of the agent and then stuff her body in a suitcase. They call in another friend, whom they kill, then chop off his head and hands. As they do all this, the father calls in a 17 year old and another woman his age, both of whom he fucks in front of the agent at the same time. Meanwhile, the daughter calls in a priest and converts to Christianity right in front of their eyes. As all this is happening, the son takes a photo of the agent's wife from his desk and starts masturbating all over it. Frustrated, the agent himself gets in on the act and starts chasing them around the room until they all stop.

For the longest time, the agent just sits in silence. Finally, he manages, "That's a hell of an act. What do you call it?"

And the father says, "The Americans!"

Stan letting them go just worked in so many ways for me. He loves them. Phil has been his best friend for over 7 years ... but also working the relationship as a spy would. He loves Henry. He relates to doing horrible things for your country. The whole Gorbachev thing and stopping him being taken down is a whole 'greater good' sort of thing where if he doesn't let them go, there's that slim chance it's going to end up making things worse between their countries. It isn't the first time he's given Russian agents some sort of slack due to his own personal feelings for them, or personal feelings for someone they also cared about. Plus I'm sure he's shellshocked to learn his suspicions were actually true, and this family he's been so close with for so long has been working against his country under his nose the whole time. There's so much going on in the scene ugh it's so good.

It's a great culmination of these past seven years imho.

Stan letting them go or not wasn't what made me feel tense in that garage scene. I thought he would and it felt right. What kept me tense was waiting for Elizabeth to potentially do something stupid and go for his gun in the event it looked like Phil talking Stan down wouldn't work.

e: ^^ I was sure the train would pull away and Liz and Phil would see Paige being escorted away with police who had identified her. It was such a gut punch to see her standing on the platform alone. It felt so right.

ugh the whole episode felt so right!!
