Release date

None set yet, most recent estimate is a beta release in 2018 with the full game following soon after.

What is Dreams?

Dreams is an upcoming game/creation tool from the creators of the LittleBigPlanet games and Tearaway exclusively for the PlayStation 4. While it contains a fully playable campaign (created entirely in Dreams), its main focus is allowing players to create just about anything they want. So most likely an endless forest of dicks. There will probably be a lot of dicks. But also games of just about every genre, movies, music, art, architecture and so on. Every single asset can be created by hand very quickly and easily, edited on the fly, scaled, modified, painted etc. and then shared with the community. If another person edits or uses something you've created in their project, you'll still get credit as the game remembers original creators. This goes not just for objects or animations or characters you create, it also goes for sounds and music. You can record yourself sneezing and use it for your animation or as a game mechanic and share it for someone else to use. Your creations can also be exported as 3D printer supported files if you want to have a physical version of your creation.

The game is remarkably flexible; there are systems in place for logic, AI, physics, just about everything is adjustable. You can create a game mechanic and bind it to a button and create animations for it.

How does it play?

You can use either a standard DualShock 4 to play and create in Dreams, or a pair of Move Controllers. Dreams will also support PlayStation VR and co-op creation.

I haven’t really been keeping up with this but it looks amazing. Sadly it seems to be flying way under the radar so hopefully Sony can get the word out better as the release approaches.

I had a lot of fun designing levels in Mario Maker and Modnation Racers but Little Big Planet’s level design toolkit was a little too intimidating for me. The videos make things look easy but it may end up having the same problem.

With this it really comes down to just how many things you can do so it can easily seem like there's a lot to take in. Apparently there's a pretty comprehensive tutorial in the game though, and the streams go a really long way to illuminate how the tools work and it does seem pretty intuitive and open to experimentation. One of their big things is that things you create are never that precious because you can recreate them so quickly. It really encourages experimentation which is a significant thing in something like this.

I'm still pretty blown away that there's an entire music creation suite included with this that you can add samples to on the fly. That alone justifies the price tag for me.

I've been hyped for this since it's introduction at E3 years ago. It looks so whimsical. I hope it turns out exactly the the way they've been showing it.

New video going really deep into the music creation tools, it's completely insane

It's a feature complete DAW system on a game console! The only thing missing is the MIDI in/out

Beat me to it! That is amazing, yeah. I can see myself sinking hours upon hours into this just for music alone.

Dreams will be featured in Sony's E3 conference and there are rumblings of a release date announce. I've heard word (unconfirmed of course) that they'll announce the beta being available on the day of the conference, too.

I saw there was basically a full DAW in the game and went from not caring to day 1 buy. It's looking really neat, have they talked about any ability to collaborate? I haven't had much chance to look into the game much, just saw part of a stream that really caught my eye a few days ago.

I believe you can real time work on stuff with friends. You can also instantly share your creations like an instrument, character, animation, building, etc.

It sounds like it is shaping up to be a game engine designed for a console and mass audience. It is wild and I think will get me to buy a PSVR to add that layer of immersion.

Yea I'm really excited to play with it in the headset, that's another fair selling point. I'm curious to see what comes out of it from some real creative minds. If I'm being honest I'm probably just gonna spend hours dicking around haha.

PSVR being supported at launch is kind of a huge deal, really. That means there will be tons of content being created for it, and you can create your own VR experience in minutes. The thought of creating a whole city out of nothing and being able to walk around it in VR is pretty dang cool to me. Not to mention creating stuff in VR. That's some and then god created the earth poo poo right there.

Also I'm pretty sure co-op is supported but I don't think it's been confirmed yet. You can definitely collaborate in terms of creating assets and sharing them, and as far as I know, you can join a friend and create in a space simultaneously, which is also pretty cool.

E3 stuff starting to come in:

PlayStation Access are doing some videos, the first of which shows the very beginning of the campaign.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rF41hhnTMM

- Two main game modes: Dream Surfing, where you go from one random dream into another, essentially never knowing what you'll find, and Dream Shaping, which is pretty self-explanatory - create something from scratch or remix already made levels, music, assets, whatever.

- You'll have your own "hub" space that you can customize like any other world in the game, and you can put "links" (more like portals) to game worlds/movies/music made by other people that you've discovered if they're something you want to experience again or show off to others.

- Couch co-op confirmed! Online multiplayer coming post-launch.

- With content that you upload, you can set permissions; whether other people can edit them, take them apart, or generally mess with them is entirely up to you. So if you've created a game, you can choose to "lock" it so it plays exactly as you want it to play.

- There are themed community events that you can take part in, create whatever you want corresponding with the theme and have others rate it

Yea gonna be a day 1, sounds like it'll be a pretty awesome creative tool.

Stare-Out

PlayStation Access did two more videos, one on creation mode (which we've seen already) but also one on DreamSurfing, or playing through/experiencing a random stream of dreams available and there's some pretty cool stuff here. You can set various filters for it, so if you want to go through stuff of a specific genre, type (movies/games/music/art), by rating so you only see the highest rated stuff etc.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOtGPUjvU5E

I am getting concerned for this game though, the PlayStation E3 conference was a huge dud in terms of Dreams and not many people seem to get how amazing this thing is. It's a difficult game to market so videos like these are really the only way to show it off properly, it's just getting people to actually watch the videos that's also difficult.

Otherwise E3 was disappointingly quiet for Dreams. One thing that has been confirmed is that there will be a beta this year. So that's something!

I’ve just kind of given up on paying attention to this game until they have a release date. They’ve been doing these info dumps forever but at this point I’m thinking the PS5 will release before this.

It's been a long while for sure, but I'm a little more optimistic I guess. I mean, there will be a beta at some point this year, so the release should be somewhere Q1 2019 if not even earlier. The thing is though that it's going to be something pretty great once it's out and it's kind of baffling to me that there's not more hype for it, especially after what they've shown on the streams. It's perhaps partly to blame on the marketing, though to be fair, it's pretty tough to market a game like this, but so far the hype seems to be very specifically focused on a group of creatives and no one else.

Fun Shoe
I think the game is going to be really, truly something special. The tools are absolutely insane, like, I wanna see a dev team that's not MM get on it and make something awesome. Obviously that will probably never happen unless they have some sort of licensing system whereby people can make money from it, but I'm sure some of the stuff we see talented individuals make is gonna be awesome. I guess the problem with the marketing of it is that a) we've been dripfed stuff over a very long time now which sort of lessens the impact, and b) a lot of people just wanna play cool poo poo, not necessarily make it. The tools also look very complex which could turn a lot of people off.

There's also the issue that LBP was awesome, but there was so much terrible crap in it that sifting through it to find the good stuff often felt like time that could be better spent just playing a different game. There is gonna be a massive amount of crap created, and MM could probably do a better job of showing us the good stuff.

I love the idea of using the tools and playing through creative tutorials that level me up as a creator.

I also love the idea of running through a series of user created levels in VR. Just getting loving crazy poo poo all over the place.

Seriously considering getting PSVR just for this, yeah. Creating in VR like a god sounds cool as hell, and having countless VR experiences to go through at your whim is insane.

Also they might announce the beta release date at Paris Games Week later this month. Everything created in the beta will carry over to the final game. No word if the beta will be open or not though.

They are? Seems like they've kept pretty silent about it since it's not been announced anywhere. But yeah, chances are it's going to be something different since we're 3 weeks away from 2019 and they still insist the beta is coming this year so a beta announcement on the stream maybe?

Beta coming tomorrow (19th) but only for those who have subscribed to the Media Molecule newsletter, others get it on 4th of January, but it will run until January 21st. Seems to be everywhere except Japan. There's an NDA on it, the filesize is roughly 4GB and doesn't require PS+.

The beta is known as the Creator Beta, so no story mode, but that's no surprise.

E: You can still subscribe to the newsletter here, the site is getting absolutely hammered currently and I can't say if it's too late to get into the beta right now. it's too late to sign up to get in on the beta though.
