As a boxing fan I care for all our divisions. Middleweights, lightweights, welterweights, you name it. It's been pretty nice seeing the even smaller weight classes get their share of the spotlight in recent years, but man, you really can't beat the energy a good heavyweight fight can bring. For a lot of people, heavyweight boxing is boxing. You do away with the conditioning of making weight, pound for pound lists and all that jazz and you now have fighting in it's simplest form. The heavyweight champ is the baddest man on the planet, end of story. Part of the reason these other divisions have grown so much in the past two decades is because, well, heavyweight boxing hasn't been all that great. It's lacked stars, it's lacked competition, it's lacked exciting fights and a lot of people feel like the fighters have themselves lacked a fair bit of skill. That's not true today though. The heavyweights are back.

The Champion

Anthony Joshua

Boxing needs stars, and Anthony Joshua looks like he could easily be the biggest star in the sport. At the very least, he's physically the biggest.

AJ has quickly rocketed through the professional ranks since he won his gold medal in 2012. The dude is seriously talented, he's huge and has a crazy physique. His amateur pedigree is excellent, and his skill set as a professional is top notch. He doesn't have any obvious weaknesses, although there's a murmur that he still might have a few untested parts of his game at the top level. I don't really buy it though, he's only ever had trouble one time as a pro, and that was against the great Wladimir Klitschko.

The Klitschko fight is the thing that is really setting Joshua apart from the rest of the heavyweights now. Joshua might have already had a belt at the time, but his high drama TKO over one of the best fighters to ever grace the division is what really made him champion. It was an impressive victory, but it's also his only real achievement at the top level. Look, I think this fight proved Joshua, but on paper a single win over an aged Wlad who himself was coming off a bit of a loss and a bit of inactivity is not ATG material. Parker is easily his next greatest challenge, and with Parker being a young active heavyweight, there will be no doubt over Joshua should he win.

The Other Champion

Joseph Parker

A Mormon Samoan chief and undefeated heavyweight champion from New Zealand, Joseph Parker is one of kind. He also apparently plays piano pretty well, so that's neat.

If you're American this might be the first you're hearing of Joseph Parker, but he's risen as quite a star in New Zealand. He became a champion the way a lot of stars do, he worked through a bunch of low level fighters while steadily building his resume and fame in his home country. Then he picked up a belt and traveled to england to defend it in front of a new audience so he could build to an even bigger fight. Parker isn't content to just lord over the WBO belt in New Zealand, he immediately sought out the hardst fight in the world: Anthony Joshua.

Joseph Parker is a good fighter, but he's the solid underdog in this fight. On his current trajectory it seems entirely possible he'll go down in history as the guy who didn't quite have enough for this era. You see, at 6'4" Parker is tall, but he's not as tall as the other big names, who are 6'6"-6'9". with a 75% KO rate and a solid punch, he's powerful, but falls a bit short of the nearly 100% KO rate some of his rivals have. He's got decently fast hands, solid fundamentals and a good work rate to back up his technique, but he's not otherworldly skilled, not incredibly evasive, not notably awkward, etc. In other words, he's very good but there's nothing about him that's exceptional. In today's world of heavyweight boxing you might need to have that special something. Parker is about as credibly good as you can get without looking superhuman.

This might look like a pretty pressimistic read of Joseph Parker, but don't get too down here, there's nothing bad about being a solidly good and well rounded fighter. I think he's the third best heavyweight in the world right now and he's absolutely a live dog in this fight. He hasn't really had a fight like this where he's had to pull something special. He has struggled in a few fights lately against the likes of Andy Ruiz and Hughie Fury, but Anthony Joshua is nowhere near that style of fighting. They're going to go at it, and they're both going to have to dig deep into themselves in this fight. Parker's heart and chin have never really played a factor in his fights before and I think if there is one exceptional thing about him, it may be that. Do not underestimate this man.

Povetkin vs Price isn't a good fight, but the ring walks here are loving P4P quality

Would you be my new best friends?

I'm embarrassed to admit it but as much as I admire the skill and talent of the smaller divisions, there's just something irresistible about watching two big guys punching with the force of a small truck :sweatdrop:

The KO was nasty though, Price was right out on his feet there.

If the ropes keep you up it's considered a knockdown (or should be)

Povetkin doesn't have much for Joshua I think. He got knocked around by Price, struggled with the size of a bigger guy, looked like he was gassing a bit too. Everything that Price did there Joshua can do better. I'm not sure if Povetkin's just not as good off the drugs or if he's just getting old but I wasn't super impressed.

Is there any rule on how many times you can get knocked out before you simply aren't allowed to box any more?

I think this fight will go the same way as the Takam one, Joshua tees off on his big block head for 10 rounds until the ref steps in to protect the 100% Ko record
