Gotcha. I assumed it was on a 10 scale, but I guess it must mean 5.1 million.

Nah. The scale is 100%. That means an estimated 5.1% of US televisions were watching it.

In the old days, before cable took off, a show being anything below double-digits on a network meant death, but now the market is so fragmented that things like this are roaring success.

A given rating is the percentage of homes that can access a show watching it. For broadcast television, that equates to something approaching every home in the US. Cable ratings will show a higher rating meaning fewer homes viewing (and varies even by channel). But yeah a 5.1 is really good in 2018

I was a Rosanne watching kid. I was into checking it out, but the whole "live audience" thing came off as so phony I couldn't stand it for long.
I should check out one of the original episodes to see if it really did feel more natural.

Digital comics alert: Amazon's gone crazy again and priced 278 Marvel graphic novels at a dollar.

They're clearly feuding with Disney (you can't pre-order physical copies of any of their movies anymore; for contrast, Ready Player One already has a preorder page up and that came out literally five days ago), I wonder if these constant price slashes are another symptom of it.

Wow, that's a very massive - and very random - sale. I'm going to need some opinions here.

First of all, this artist hates Wolverine:

Now that that's out of the way, I'd like some details on these:

New Mutants by Zeb Wells: The Complete Collection
Collects New Mutants (2009) #1-11, #15-21 and material from X-Necrosha #1 and Marvel Spotlight: New Mutants.

It says Complete but I guess that's just a complete run, which is okay with me, but I'd like to know both how good it is and how much someone who has never faithfully read any X-men will be able to appreciate it. I know Sunspot(He's brazilian!) and Magik(She's Collosus weird sister) but that's it.

New Mutants: Back To School - The Complete Collection

Now, since this one was released before, I guess it would help me learn about the characters, but Christ, that's some terrible art. Unless it's absolutely mandatory I'd rather just read a wiki summary about them or something.

Jubilee by Robert Kirkman

This looks like it's totally my poo poo, except for the "By Robert Kirkman" bit. I have The Astounding Wolf-Man, which is pretty much gore porn and I've avoided Invincible for the same reason. I don't know how you could turn something like Jubilee into that but I'm still wary.

Thor by Walter Simonson Vol. 1

There's a 99.9% chance I'm getting this and Vol.2 but 3 ain't on sale and that's a no-go for me. How much am I going to miss?

You're going to miss some of the greatest comics ever, that's how much you're going to miss. Those issues are awesome, but it's mostly set up for the really amazing stuff that's coming up. And without the next set of books, you won't find out what's going "DOOM DOOM DOOM".

Zeb Wells' New Mutants is quite good, but it very much builds on stuff that came before it. I think you can still enjoy it all on its own, but I think you'll get more out of it if you've read the original New Mutants as well as Legion.

Which art are you saying is terrible? The cover above is just from, I think, the last issue of the series (and isn't terrible). The interiors are all pretty different from what I remember. Anyway, it was a pretty decent series but it probably won't help you much with the 2009 New Mutants series. The 2003 one (above) was about a new class of students who were being taught by some of the original New Mutants characters. Most of the rest show up later (although Magik was still "dead" at this point iirc).

Also holy crap I don't remember Bachalo doing interiors on that series (although I personally wasn't too familiar with him at the time).

The Hulk is supposed to be grey in all the panels. Something went wrong with the coloring in Incredible Hulk #1 . I'm not sure I buy the official line that the grey was inconsistent and that panel was the worst of it since the jeep is colored exactly as the Hulk should be, but that's the panel that made Lee go, "Hey, that could work..."

Todd McFarlane visited Stan and put this on Facebook. Nothing hard-hitting ('cept to your heartstrings.)

quote:

MY RECENT VISIT...

"Stan Lee. I wonder how he’s doing?”

It’s a question, I think, many of us in the comic industry have been asking ourselves recently. With a handful of news articles swirling on the internet about Stan, it has led to lots of questions. Through all of it, I really have focused on just one crucial question…

“I wonder how Stan is doing?”

With that in mind, I want to post about my recent visit to see my dear friend Stan at his house last week (March 29th). To be clear, what I am writing is strictly about the one hour visit I had with him. What Stan does with all the rest of his personal time was not something we talked about during my visit.

When I entered the room where Stan was seated he welcomed me and asked that I sit next to him (since his hearing is far from perfect these days). And…how did Stan look you may ask? Like a 95-year-old man. I think we tend to forget that fact, at times, since he’s become so iconic and seemingly timeless. He’s a man who has been around for nearly a century.

For the next 60 minutes, we talked about things like his growing up in New York, his love of comics, his even bigger love of his late wife Joanie and how he was doing health wise. He told me that getting old kind of sucked but said, “what are you going to do?” His stories told me how obvious it was that he missed his wife and, how every day, a pair of ducks come swooping down from the sky to land in his pool and then come up to the glass windows begging for food (which his wife would oblige every time). We talked baseball, movies and he asked what it was it like for me to live next to a giant natural desert preserve in Arizona. Basically, it was every day, normal banter mixed with a few fun stories.

But soon it was getting late and I had to get going. As I got up to leave, Stan grabbed my hand and said, “Todd, thanks for coming by. Your visit is much better than any medicine I could take.”

So, what did I observe on my visit for that one specific hour? I saw a 95-year-old friend.

And for me, at least, that was comforting.

TODD

I saw McFarlane do an interview thing with Stan last year at Emerald City and it was one of the best things I had ever witnessed. Stan was riffing on Todd and Todd was taking it all in good humour. They had a great understanding between the two and it was like watching old friends riff about the good old days. The jokes and banter was great and it really looked like Todd though of Stan as a mentor and father figure more than anything else. I am glad that he still keeps in touch with Stan and visits him.

Got drunk and bought all of Bruce Tim Justice League on Blu-ray. That poo poo really holds up and is a pro loving watch.

It made me realize there's a lot of Bruce Tim content. You got four seasons of Batman the Animated Series, a season of Superman the animated series, two seasons of Batman Beyond, four seasons of Justice League, two seasons of static shock, and one season of Project Zeta.

That's a lot of loving episodes.

Oh, also movies. You got mask of the Phantasm, the mr. Freeze one, I think Superman had one, and the Joker one for Batman Beyond. That's pretty loving good.

Oh, also that Harley Quinn movie that proves that you should never return and make a sequel to something after it's finished. If Frank Miller had awareness heat agree with me and I'm sure Alan Moore would agree with me. It's never a good idea, you will never match up to what you originally did. The expectation in their mind is too hard to match.

Also, I just got to stop getting drunk and buying things. I mean, it wasn't too expensive but it's a really bad habit to have. I'm not made of money. Also, my liver.
