I'm not really feeling the social media aspect and I hope it's something they tie up sooner rather than it being a season-long deal. Especially since with the way it was implemented they've done things that are functionally similar in the past. I'm optimistic about the show's future tho, even if I do feel it's almost one of the weakest season premieres a Lupin series has had.

Watched the first episode. Other than a few of the movies the last bit of Lupin I watched was whatever episodes Adult Swim was airing way back in the day, so I've been out of the loop for a while. It was pretty fun! Stylish, too. Really curious to see how the "Lupin Game" angle is developed in these upcoming episodes.

I was amused by how they got out of the airport. It counts as both absurd and clever. Seeing Lupin get briefly serious later on was interesting. He's only rarely like that. I have the feeling these killers at the end are probably a reference to an earlier Lupin story, no?

I'm by no means a Lupin historian, but I assume it's a hodgepodge of rivals and enemies from past stories and probably some new ones. Also the whole "It's totally anonymous and can't be traced bit" is extra funny since it's been shown that tracking *coin ledgers is stupid easy. At least for the FBI. I hope Lupin gets revenge on the series bad guys by emailing Zenigata their "my_crimes.txt".

Presumably, Ami will be the Lupin gang’s guide to the horrifying wonderland that is the Internet. She’s probably going to end up betraying them, but not in, like, a femme-fatale way, more ‘I have something I desperately need to do and I don’t trust you weirdos’. Or, alternatively, ‘this is probably going to kill me and I don’t want you weirdos involved because I like you’.

Goemon not knowing how to use a camera felt a bit inconsistent with past depictions. Normally I'd just say, "lol, Lupin continuity," but I feel like even in very recent stuff (like the previous episode), Goemon has been portrayed as less clueless about technology than that. Or is the joke the other way around, and Goemon is so young that he's only taken pictures with a phone before?

By the way, another Goemon-related thought; I like that this episode makes clear that he's just one among many assassins with gimmicks involving non-gun weapons in the Lupinverse. (Are these assassins all new characters, or did some of them appear in some Part II episode? I've only watched a few episodes of Part II.)

I know they're unlikely to shake up the core cast but it'd be awesome if she stuck around somehow. She's great and plays off the others pretty well. EDIT: \/ probably. They're all from the original manga, many of them from fairly early on in it. I'm digging the basic premise of the show so far. It is a bit heavy handed, though. In particular I kind of got the feeling the Tesla and energy drink this episode were kind of heavy handed instances of product placement?

Product placement where the name of the product is not mentioned and they're clearly legally distinct parody right. It's fine if you thought it was a bit much, but product placement it absolutely was not. Waffleman_ fucked around with this message at 14:01 on Apr 12, 2018 |

i suppose it's product placement in the same way lupin having a fiat was product placement. even from the first series, the anime has definitely had a focus on accurate recreation of things like cars and guns, which i feel goes more with a romanticism about the tools of thieves and spies than commercialism.

Or is the joke the other way around, and Goemon is so young that he's only taken pictures with a phone before? I was hoping it was going to fall apart in his hands somehow, since one of my few Lupin trivia bits of knowledge is that Goemon can't use tech well and kind of doesn't like it. He didn't seem particularly tech savvy in the past episode to me, and I think maybe at best his character has progressed to knowing some of the basics of tech (like what the internet is) but not being able to use it well at all. My fresh take is that I'm pretty shocked at one little moment they showed in the preview, like it's not major in the grand scheme of things but showing Ami get shot in the shoulder seems like a major plot development to give away in the trailer. Then again, trailer's supposed to make you tune in to the next ep and showing moments like that is probably a good idea to try to hook people, especially this early into the show.

Not a very good episode, that one. It's pretty good evidence that Goemon can't carry a 100% serious story in a modern, non-Japanese setting on his own - it just ends up being unintentionally surreal. And the ~so moe~ assassin girl who speechifies about how she’s only a weapon to be wielded by the evil man who saved her life is a tiresome cliché at this point. It could have been an OK episode if it just took itself a bit less seriously.

It's simultaneously shocking and really sanitized in a way that makes it feel real odd, like they were kept from going as far as they'd wanna? Which might also explain the way they had to do that shot of Goemon chopping off a dude's hands.
