They sure do. From 2006, which I think may predate the use of the idea for film trailers:

I guess Maverick was incredible enough to be sufficient penance for introducing this annoying trend.

I watched this a few days ago, and goddamn, I agree. In terms of visuals, it’s up there with Blade Runner 2049 and Prometheus as the best looking films of the 2010s.

Oblivion is highly underrated IMO, too.

I thought Oblivion was a totally fine 60s/70s throwback sci-fi adventure. Its visuals really outshine the quality of the writing though.

It and Tron both are a bit too indulgently paced for the depth of their narratives. They're cut like Ridley Scott's older films, or Villeneuve's current films, but they don't have enough depth in their concepts or their moods to sustain them. Top Gun leaned into unabashed sentimentality and white-knuckled spectacle instead and worked much better for it.

Top Gun's flight scenes wowed the hell out of me, but the rest of the film stunk imo.

Same for Oblivion too honestly. So underrated.

And it's not just the visuals that rock. Oblivion's sound design is insanely good. The drone sfx on a good sound system blow me away.

This one is still my "favorite"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruY1eT9bXiw

This band (Prep School) has seemingly created no other songs and only has a basic YouTube, a Facebook and a website that is now defunct. Despite the frontwomanhaving given an interview, I am dead certain this was somehow cooked up entirely by marketing execs. The middle of the cover is just too perfectly tailor-made to add people shooting guns in slow motion.

Edit: I have very deliberately avoided mentioning which song they are covering because you do need to listen to it yourself. Just don't have anything fragile nearby in case you punch the table in rage.

Tron 2 is one of the coldest, soulless movies. The most cynically packaged nostalgia garbage for aging genxers.

Oblivion is great though. Tom Cruise runs, jumps, rides a fast bike and is decades older than both of his partners. A totally pure, undiluted Tom Cruise movie experience. 10/10 would watch again.

To be fair, that is a very good trailer. I've never forgotten it. It's probably my second favorite video game trailer, after this one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMsbMK9Odoc

Which I liked so much, I went out and bought the first Assassin's Creed the next day to finally dive into the series, so I could catch up to the game before it came out. Which I did. Which I'd say is a trailer doing it's job.

Tron 2 is undeniably buoyed from preceding a decade of cynical nostalgia that doesn't have Daft Punk and looks far worse.

Nah :(

According to Reddit:

quote:

Tron: Legacy was predominantly filmed on the Sony F35 digital camera, which has a maximum resolution of 1080p. it was finished for a 2K master, and this would be true even if it filmed in a higher resolution because of its heavy VFX, which are typically rendered in 2K anyway. every Disney movie is a 2K master upscaled to 4K, for reference. they have very good algorithms to do so, better than something any consumer can get their hands on, but nonetheless. if Tron Legacy got a 4K disk, it would be upscaled by the same process, although i think the addition of HDR would be a more valuable than the increased resolution.

gently caress. I love Tron: Legacy. Though my favorite scene will always be the club scene. A fight breaks out, and the DJ programs, played by Daft Punk, switch to fight music, because of course that's what DJ programs would do. And the fight is pretty brutal. And then when Flynn comes in, everything shuts down. And you see a few programs fall to their knees in worship, because their literal God has just shown up, while everyone else is fighting to maintain control.

I know people spoke well of the animated TV series, but is it good-good or "actually better written than you'd think" good? I'd be into exploring more facets of that universe, but have a hard time getting into things that are written as kids shows (like Camp Cretaceous) as opposed to things that are written as all-ages shows (like The Clone Wars). Is it more the former or the latter?

If it can stand alongside, say, Roughnecks: Starship Troopers or Men In Black: The Series or Godzilla: The Series that's about where my bar is.

See, and here's my problem. I know I just said that it's a fascinating world to explore. But I'm not sure if I actually want to explore it without Kosinski directing. I like the first movie, but I don't love it. I LOVE Legacy.

I keep hearing about a part 3, and I'll check it out. But if Kosinski isn't directing, which I hear he's not, ehhhhh, I don't have super high hopes. He cracked the code, for me.

This is my way of saying that no, I haven't checked out the animated show. And I hear you about Camp Cretaceous. I watched some of it with my daughter, and that is not one of those, "And adults can like it, too!" shows. It's dreadful.
