the art direction is pretty boring but otherwise this looks like a faithful adaptation of an enjoyable pulp scifi book. i’ll watch it

the murderbot books are charming scifi, and frankly theyre better than the silo books, so i expect this show to be better than silo if only because i can be certain they will adapt one book per season a la reacher to completely bypass the surf dracula/mystery box problems typical of tv scifi

So they are going to focus on "quippy, sarcastic Murderbot" more than on "extremely socially awkward Murderbot", huh. I understand it is hard to adapt books that are 95% inner monologues, but I have a bad feelings.

also I really don't think Skarsgard is a good casting, although I would be glad if they proved me wrong.

There's definitely some social awkwardness in there.

Also Murderbot is usually only quippy and sarcastic in his internal monologue where nobody can hear, and outwardly awkward when he has to interact with people in any way beyond being a SecUnit. That seems to have been retained.

Thread comments + apples track record with sci-fi adaptations had me ready to hate this… but I actually am kinda intrigued by the trailer? Maybe I was just easy to please because I was half expecting Deadpool level narration.

Edit: Okay, I just got around to watching the new Wes Anderson trailer and I also got interested in it despite being very cold on his last several films. Maybe I'm just in an extremely receptive mood tonight.

Anyway a new film by the director of Slow West (Which I liked a lot) popped up in my feed today. Looks cool:

i had imagined a woman, or woman-coded genderless murderbot, probably due to the books being written by a woman. so i dont love skarsgaard either, i was picturing an alison pill type, an actress who is good at bug-eyed discomfort

When I first heard David Dastmalchian was attached to this project I figured it'd be him.

The only thing I've liked Skarsgard in is Big Little Lies. Normally I think he's very wooden. He's kind of doofy IRL though, so maybe that will translate.

I like that they've kept some of the color patterns from the original show. The Torosaurus and the T. Rex look like scientifically updated models but they've got the same colors as 1999.

We really only know the colors of like six non-bird dinosaurs at the this time, so anything is fair game.

Not updated enough. No balls on BBC's part. They should have made all the dinosaurs go full-feather.

Oh Ishida from Shogun is in this. Thought he was a charismatic presence. The fact that he's obviously getting marked early as motivation and that you need a bunch of horrible scenes to justify the revenge plot is making me less than eager to see it tho.

Google and Apple have both implemented new systems whereby every single phone's accelerometers are earthquake monitor and they mass the data to confirm and can get an alert out knowing exactly where it is and how it's travelling before even the fast initial shockwaves have propagated far, more quickly than the formal sensor network will alert (if you're in at least a somewhat populated area so there's enough phones)

Back in 2020 when they were just kicking it off, they've refined it further since then. For an event like that they can get an alert on everyone's phones after the first handful of seconds. Can't do much about the epicenter but it could give much of the broader metro area population enough warning to hop to it even when the epicenter was near the middle of it.
