Back when word came out that James Cameron's followup to Aliens was set in the deep sea with a possible extraterrestrial influence, several competing studios thought, "Ah, he's making Aliens under the sea."

Film projects like Deepstar Six, Leviathan, and Lords of the Deep all ran with that misconception to some degree and rushed out films to beat The Abyss to the box office, but no one really fully embraced "Aliens under the sea."

Underwater looks like it's just 30 years late to the party, and I'm extremely here for it. :colbert:

Hell yes to Deep Rising. Nine years late to hang with The Abyss, but definitely very Aliens flavored. There were multiple reviews at release calling it an outright Aliens clone.

Still a fun ride today:

On the topic of Underwater's promotion, it seemed like Disney was going to let it drown in the crib after aquiring it, since they only released a single full trailer back in August. Over the past few weeks or so however, they've been pumping out a ton of TV spots and social media ads with new footage, so idk what the game is here.

There's a partial script online for Underwater - I don't know if it's early or not, it's basically the base collapse shown in the trailer to the end - and it's written with a lot of wiggle room for how violent the content can be depicted (as written, the whole thing seems kind of boring and it ends abruptly).

Yeah, that's the early spec script from Brian Duffield (The Babysitter, Insurgent (Divergent part 2))that was being sent around in 2015. After Fox picked it up, they apparently had Adam Cozad (Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, The Legend of Tarzan) do a revision.

I'd love to get my hands on that revision. Having read the 2015 script and looking at what footage the trailers have shown, there's certainly some key stuff that's from 2015, but also a decent amount that looks new.

I've had a question I've been meaning to ask in here: In your experiences, what percentage of the 'final' film do you typically have access to for each step of the advertisement process?

Teaser?
First full Trailer?
Second/Final trailer?

I feel like there's teasers that come out while the film is still being shot. In those instances, do you have access to the script to try and fit a tone, or do you just kinda wing it with what you have?

Script comes first

then editor's assembly

then the first feature reel

then subsequent feature reels, sometimes up to like 7 or 8 before the feature is locked.

But then there can be pick up shots to supplement it. There are often times that the film hasn't wrapped when the first teaser comes out. Also VFX can go on right up until release

Or in the case of, oh let's go with Green Lantern, never finish.

So when you're doing the trailers, do you typically have access to the full, most-recent feature reel?
