Most of them will be region B but there's an Arrow flash sale started now going over the weekend. https://arrowfilms.com/shop/april-flash-sale/?pi=1

edit: I ordered Society and the Dead or Alive trilogy which are both listed as region b on the Arrow store but blu-ray.com says they are region free so the region data may not be completely correct on the store.

HEY YOU GUYS!

I noticed on Amazon that there are a few different Infernal Affairs blu-rays. Anyone know if they're all the same transfer? Blu-ray.com only has a review about one of them. I was basically just wondering if it's all the same disc with a different cover.

I only see US/UK/HK so probably not identical discs. The Honk Kong release (MegaStar) is supposed to be better, but probably not worth paying twice as much to import it if you just want the first film. Looks like there's no US release for the second or third though so if you're interested in them imports is the only option. Thr second isn't quite as good as the first but it's still very good and the third is fine. The UK trilogy set is priced well but region B, the HK about $60 to import (I usually use dddhouse).

Blu-ray.com says it's A+B

This is the best place to check the actual region coding on their UK releases, their web store doesn't sell the US versions. They will say region B on the website and on the disk itself but sometimes are not. Anything that's been released in both regions should be safe, and some of the ones they've put out just in the UK aren't locked. For example I have their UK only release of Shivers, it's listed on their site as region B only, but it's not and I just watched it on a US PS4 last week.

The biggest thing is for anyone outside region B to check region coding of anything you'd like to buy on blu-ray.com I find it more reliable than the information on Arrow's web store. Usually anything they've released in the US and UK will be the same disc for both regions and even with shipping their sales are usually a good deal for those of us in the US.

Recommended movies:
The Addiction
Shivers
Society
Irma Vep (region b locked, but it's the only blu release)
The Driller Killer
Lots of Bava and Argento if you're into that
Miike sets, Dead or Alive and Black Society Trilogy

If you're region B native then go nuts.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that the UHD player doesn't play discs from all regions, it's just that UHD releases are all region free so with UHD you just don't have to worry about it. But if you're playing regular blu rays it's still only going to play region A.

That is my understanding as well, and one of the reasons I don't have a UHD player yet. If I'm going to buy a new expensive box just to play discs I would really prefer one that can play any disc on my shelf.

I'll probably be pre-ordering this one, Wheels on Meals is the best. It's really nice being able to play any region.

Is the dvd really garbage tier? I haven't watched that one but have been watching a few Shaw Bros dvds lately and the Celestial Pictures restorations are usually pretty good.

Anyway, looks like there are cheap blu-rays to import from Germany or Japan per blu-ray.com. The German release has English subs, but is 1080/50i and region b. The Japanese will be region a, but have no English subs and according to the site is mpeg-2 lol.

I just introduced a friend to King Hu through the criterion channel, but he’s very anti dub so I was hopeful for a blu of come drink with me. I saw it in a local theatre last year and it looked great, so I was hoping that meant there might be a good transfer.

As far as I know there haven't been any restorations of the Shaw catalog since the early 00s, so even what stuff there is on blu-ray I would expect to come from the same source as any dvds. There's a number of Chang Cheh and Lau Kar-leung movies I'd kill to see get a proper hd release. I was actually just last night comparing right next to each other the dvd and prime video (i think hd, it says 7gb/hr on the quality settings) for My Young Auntie and the video looked pretty much the same to me with the dvd audio sounding a little better. Also, My Young Auntie is a great action comedy and the Prime version is not dubbed like a lot of their Shaw Bros stuff is. It's not Dirty Ho level great, but a good time.

For King Hu specifically, a couple more of his Taiwan movies have been restored. Kino put out the US blu-ray of Legend of the Mountain last year and it's usually quite affordable. Less of an action movie but I love it, the restoration is beautiful and it's probably the best example of King Hu as nature photographer. And The Fate of Lee Khan has a new restoration touring now, I think a blu-ray is supposed to be out this summer. That one is basically Dragon Inn 2 and is also great. I'd love to see a new restoration of Raining in the Mountain (he shot it and Legend in Korea at the same time) or The Valiant Ones (because it's so hard to see) but I expect this is all we'll get.
