I just dumped my old Nightmare on Elm St and Friday the 13th DVD sets because I bought the Blu ray sets. At a fraction of the price of what the DVDs cost 10 years ago too.

BTW Wal Mart has the new F13 blu ray set on the shelves for $29.99 if anyone missed the older one that's going for a couple hundred dollars now.

Only problem with the new set is it doesn’t contain Jason Goes to Hell and Jason X. The old set is the only way so far to get those two on Blu.

I should probably just save these codes to back up my collection or sell them for a buck, but whatever you guys are cool.

I like getting slipcovers but it’s nothing I feel is necessary. Like if there are two copies of a movie on a shelf, I’ll go for the one with the slip over the one with out. No, the real insanity comes with how multiple movies come packaged in a single set. If I can get a series as individual releases with individual plastic cases, I’ll do that over everything in one oversized case. The exception being the collection containing bonus discs like the Star Wars and James Bond sets, them I’ll get that one instead.

I used to work at a used video store and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a mom come in with all the Disney tapes demanding a few grand and I can only offer like $20. If you want actual valuable tapes, Wrestling is the way to go. Couple of them can go for over $100.

So with In the Mouth of Madness coming to Shout!, there’s been some rumblings that means Shout will start distribution for Warner/New Line. Just browsing their library, there’s a lot of titles that deserve a good release.

First DVD was Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, a movie you forgot existed. I might still have my original player too. A massive Sanyo I believe. Almost as big as the stereo receiver.

Big Mean Jerk posted:

My first DVD was a copy of Fargo that came in a bizarre jewel case contraption that had a black tray you slid out from the bottom to access the disc. I cant find any pictures of it online, but I swear it existed.
I’ve never seen one of those, but I have seen some that have tall jewel cases. It was for a copy of Night of the Living Dead. The worst cases though were the snapcases. Can we all agree that the snapcase era of DVD was the worst.

I hate Disney releases. They have one of the biggest, most desired vaults in film history and they know it. They drip feed the same 20 movies again and again with a new release before vaulting it and driving the price up. Anything beyond their top tier money makers gets a fairly mediocre release or sometimes doesn’t get released at all. I’d love to see them get on the boutique label bandwagon and release some forgotten classics with some care.

New Shout Steelbooks in August for Army of Darkness, The Howling and Lifeforce. Lifeforce is getting a new 4K transfer as well. I’m not a steelbook fan, but the new Lifeforce transfer sounds tempting.

I want to be That Guy who buys up all the horror VHS tapes at every single flea market and every junk store but I'm too lazy and hate getting out of the house that early in the morning :(

Flea markets are half the reason I collect so much old junk. It’s dried up for games, but movies are always plentiful. I’ve yet to find any fantastic finds for movies. It’s mostly a lot of late 90s/early 00s action and comedy films you can find new for the same price people are selling them for. Best find yet was a copy of House from Criterion on DVD for like $2.

Heads up, Vinegar Syndrome are having their Midway to Black Friday sale (50% almost everything) going from May 25-28 including two mystery blu rays. One of them they say will not get a second run after it’s initial 1,500 piece first run. They said it won’t be a horror film, so if you like weird porn on BR this is your reminder.

Criterion titles for August

Ernst Lubitsch's Heaven Can Wait (1943)
Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life (2011)
Tomás Gutiérrez Alea's Memories of Underdevelopment (1968)
Susan Seidelman's Smithereens (1982)
Robert M. Young's The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez (1982)

Nothing too exciting for me, but Smithereens sounds like something I might like.

Full UHD discs. I doubt they will redo the standard blu-ray, but I’m guessing they will use the same master that’s currently available on iTunes. And it looks like you can buy them individually. Details are a little scarce right now.

I appreciate how Best Buy is still somewhat catering to this niche market by putting out a lot of pretty nice steelbooks, but it's loving irritating to see a nice Jurassic Park Collection steelbook that I'd probably like to own but we're literally 1 week out from a new movie dropping and then my movie OCD will be telling me it's not a complete set.

This is the reason I try not to buy boxsets unless it has exclusive bonus material.

I really want shout factory to figure the rights to the Wild Style soundtrack. Even Scratch had to hire Qbert to foley-scratch all the footage; fair use wasn't enough since the movie was made before anyone realized that getting rights to samples was a thing.
