Mahasamatman posted:Is there a good US release of Hellraiser 1 and 2? I watched them as a kid during an extended hospital stay and want to rewatch them. There's a "Horror Classics" 2 pack with both for 15 bucks. The transfers are ports of the "Midnight Madness" blu rays from a couple of years earlier, and are good quality.

When you're a kid in a small town, the only things you absorb are what's right in front of you in the 3 media sources you have, so the 80's to me were Reagan and the wind-down of the Cold War, Huey Lewis, Madonna, Hair Metal, Freddy Krueger, a billion bad horror movies, Nintendo, Peewee Herman, baseball, slip n slides, tv hotline number commercials, arcades and skee ball, synth drums, hot wheels and board games. And a lot of broken bones.

A line in this stuck out for me, “You don’t really meet people because of Netflix". Why not? None of the streaming services have any kind of social element, and it seems like an oversight. A Netflix with a friends list, maybe via Letterboxd integration or something, would be cool. Maybe each film can have a lobby where people can join to watch together, or a place to talk about the film after. Filter for your city if you're looking for someone local, hell, integrate a dating component. There's lots of possibilities there. The only thing I've seen that's anything like this is BigscreenVR, and there the choices are incredibly limited unless you know someone with amazing broadband and good taste in movies. That being said, it feels like the actual future of social movie watching.

I once rented a tape of Madman to watch w a buddy and the reels were disconnected. I took the tape apart with a glasses screwdriver, re-reeled and scotch taped it, sealed it back up and watched the movie. And it's a fond memory. The streaming equivalent to that is opening a new port on my router to bypass the firewall. It just doesn't have the same charm.

I'm not familiar how 24/25fps issues are resolved on Blu-ray vs how they were on DVD, but I was surprised to find it was still an issue when I got the Grenada/Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes region A bluray set and immediately noticed the theme was in the wrong key.

Silence was criminally ignored. Barely any marketing, and doa during awards season. Most people I talked to didn't know Scorsese had a release that year, and it's one of his best. One of the only serious, quality films about God released in a long time.

Did the original music licensing contracts for these kinds of shows just include broadcast rights or something? You don't see this kind of issue with movies with licensed music distributed theatrically vs. home video.

I used to record movies all the time as a kid, but I was so OCD that I real-time edited out the commercials. Wish I hadn't. I have a tape I made of a 1992 Halloween night showing of NOES5, NOTLD, and Magic, complete with commercials. I haven't watched it in 20 years, I should check that out in October.

Never in my life have I seen a box set that consists solely of several copies of the same movie. And it's not even some multi-format thing, or some weird series overlap situation, just straight up multiple blu-rays of the same movie in a different case. What in the world.

Yeah, it's a good movie, except for the incredibly cliche and mean spirited reason for the whole movie existing. Still worth a watch though. Taylor Sheridan is usually reliable, with the exception of his incredibly awful tv series Yellowstone.

I still own the only two strictly-DVD players I ever bought. The first is a bulky as hell RCA from 1998 that takes forever to load discs and has no region hacks. In 2001, I upgraded to the Philips DVP642, which was like the holy grail of region free players. That thing can play anything you throw at it.

Digipak is the official name for the square cardboard CD case with the inner plastic disc tray, and they have no snap lock. The snap case DVD concept is owned by Warner.

Aesthetically I actually liked the look of spined-out snappers on a shelf more than standard cases. The trade off in durability was a problem, yeah, but the biggest dealbreaker is that when you had a bunch of them together on a shelf, the snap flap would get hung on the case next to it and you couldn't pull it out, or you'd end up pulling out a bunch at once. It was a pretty glaring design flaw.

Was there ever a release of Blade Runner 2049 anywhere in the world that had a lot special features? The US disc has the three short films and a trailer and that's it. I know the movie wasn't very profitable in the theatre, so the studio wasn't going to spend any more money on a bunch of in depth featurettes, but man does it ever need the multi disc treatment.

Because I'm still a bluray buyer, I prepaid for a couple of movies for cheap online via Walmart and went to the store to get them. I hadn't been inside a Walmart in at least half a decade, and the online pickup is now this giant orange and black tower with touchscreens and sliding glass panels that materializes my poo poo in like 30 seconds.

# ¿ Feb 17, 2020 03:53 |

Eh, anything that minimizes the amount of time I spend inside a Walmart can't be that bad. The big revelation of the experience, though, was that they're probably on the cusp of a total transition into an automated Amazon style warehouse that you can also pick poo poo up from. That monolith looming over the workers is a monument to the end of most of their jobs.
