When it comes to new stuff, absolutely. But it's a buyer's market when it comes to used DVDs these days. I regularly find Like New condition used DVDs out in the wild for like $1 or $2, and if it's not some gorgeous movie where I wanna see it as great as it can possibly look, I'll pick it up. Plus, I have more nostalgia for DVDs than Blu-Rays. Currently I'm obsessed with DVDs that have SPECIAL EDITION in a bar across the top of the cover, usually white text on red. I also love when it has W I D E S C R E E N in black on a gold bar across the top. It's stuff I never though I'd get nostalgic over, but nowadays whenever I see it it makes me smile. Oh, and snapcases! If it's a movie I love and it's a snapcase in great condition, you better believe I'm picking it up.

This is one of those things where you’re not even aware of what you’re missing out on. A casual consumer is going to scan a shelf with fifty different titles on it, not bother making sure they look at every single title, and the ones that catch their eye are what they’ll gravitate towards.

It's essentially a return to paper VHS sleeves, in that sense. Those were always highly visible in video stores.

I'm really excited about the upcoming blu-ray release of Oleanna. It's one of my favorite films/plays and I've previously only ever seen it non-anamorphic. It's apparently a UK Region Free release from Indicator. I haven't bought foreign blu-rays before and I'm in the US. Would Amazon.co.uk be the best place to buy it? Will the shipping be a lot? Are there better places for foreign blu-rays that I should be looking?

So I asked my friend about this, and he pulled data on this for me. During the Criterion / Arrow sales, the margins are pretty much razor-thin, like retail price being maybe a buck or two more above store cost. B&N does it to get people in the store and hopefully buy magazines (which are stupidly high-margin), or again get interested in nerd toys or Nook tablets.

With 10% off Member Discount (+ a 20% off coupon sometimes) is it then a loss?

On the subject of physical media, Amazon is expanding its MOD (Manufactured on Demand) significantly very soon, basically making it so that anyone can publish their films through Createspace not just as a DVD-R like they've been able to thus far, but also as BD-R, or multi-disc sets. I think the future of physical media will be a whole lot more MOD titles: if you want a film, its printed for you, if you don't, it's not.

Yeah those are definitely MOD through Createspace. I self-publish on there and all the books have that. Basically you just upload a PDF of the cover art and PDF of the inside and they print a copy right when anyone orders it. No overhead whatsoever, and your product is right up there on Amazon with anyone else's, and even on the Barnes & Noble site too. It's a great deal, and of the few things I truly love about Amazon.

Is the Criterion release Breakfast Club blu-ray the same transfer as the 30th anniversary blu-ray? And if it isn't, is it noticeable enough an improvement that it'd be worth paying the Criterion price and not the $5.99 that the 30th anniversary goes for? I'm not interested in bonus features, just want to watch the movie.

According to reports from users on the Blu-Ray.com forum, the replacement copies people sent away for of the Creature From the Black Lagoon legacy blu-ray set are still flawed in some ways (inexplicably soft picture, waxy DNR). No word on if there will be replacement copies of these replacement copies, but I doubt it. This will probably just end up being a permanently flawed set. It's a shame, because these movies deserve better, and Universal has done exceptional work on all the other sets.

As many of you know, on June 4th Amazon is ending its Media on Demand department, which means all CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Rays produced on demand will become instantly out of print. Before this happens, I think we should share some titles that are worth picking up before they disappear. Not to toot my own horn, but I've made eight feature-length films, all of them released through Amazon MOD. I have lowered the price on every single one of my titles to $5 each, including the 6-disc collection that has six films. If you purchase any of these, I make $0, because I've set the prices to the absolute lowest I can. I just want the discs out here in the world before they disappear. Here's a complete list of my MOD titles:

- Shredder
- Rehearsals
- Ramekin
- Bed
- Mute Date
- The DVD
- Strummer
- Attack of the Giant Blurry Finger
- The Cody Clarke Collection, Vol. 1 (6-Disc Collection) (Shredder / Rehearsals / Ramekin / Bed / Mute Date / The DVD)
- Shredder / Strummer (2-Disc Double Feature Collection)
- Artifact of a Love (Alternate box art version of The DVD)

Will these things be available in any form after fall of MOD? I got no money.

Still trying to figure that out as there's no 1:1 replacement to Amazon MOD elsewhere at the moment—what they had was truly unique, and I will miss the zero overhead costs a lot. Also a bunch of indie distributors like Gravitas Ventures and a couple others were straight up using Amazon MOD in order to make their discs, so it's not even just the filmmakers that are putting their films out themselves that are hurt by this. I'm a huge physical media nut so I'm always going to make sure that my films will be available physically somehow, but the prices are gonna have to be higher, as I'll have to order a few hundred copies at a time from somewhere so that it's cost effective. I'll try and make sure to work that cost into the budget of my next films.

If a whole bunch of people on ebay are selling a DVD set for a significant discount what are the odds that it's not a bunch of people selling bootlegs? I wanted to know what the Maude complete series set goes for and all online retailers price it at about 75-80 bucks. But then a poo poo ton of ebay sellers have it for a little under 40. Could it be that these are overstock or bulk warehouse dealers or just a sea of bootlegs. I'm not sure what to think because that's a really specific thing to be so widely bootlegged and I can't imagine all the kids are sitting around shouting "I need to see all of Maude!".

They are definitely bootlegs. Shout Factory TV sets get bootlegged a lot—The Nanny, Mary Hartman Mary Hartman, Maude, The Phi Silvers Show, you name it. It's a known problem. A good indicator of this is when you see people complaining on Amazon or eBay about duplicate discs in the set, or very low picture quality, etc.

Part of what make these older shows targets for becoming bootlegs by the way is that nobody necessarily expects great picture quality from an older show, so they can get away with using a single-layer disc in order to cut costs. That's really the racket—take something that would normally be dual-layer discs, manufacture them on cheap and often unreliably faulty single-layer discs, and sell it for half price. Any low picture quality just gets blamed on the show being old.
