WAs Geoffrey a Penders creation? That would explain a lot I didn’t want to know.

In addition to his echidna magnum opus, Penders went into all sorts of inappropriate grimdark and gritty poo poo, traded in weird racial stereotypes and holocaust analogies, and sexualized his talking cartoon animal children characters. And somehow also made it all incredibly boring. Other Archie Sonic creators had mixed records, but Penders was many tiers worse even before he split off and started doing his own horrifying indie echidna thing and tweeting his secret plans for the sonic characters with a hand in his pants. Archie hosed up because the building they never digitized the contracts with their creators and the place they were stored in got flooded/burned down, I forget which. This is the part where people post: a) nonsensical echidna collection 1 b) nonsensical echidna collection 2 c) 13 generation echidna family tree d) crying sonic cover e) SSJ3 Tails f) pin-up future timewarp female characters g) any of the horrifying images of stuff penders worked on after leaving h) all of the above Discendo Vox fucked around with this message at 00:04 on May 4, 2019 |

I mentioned it earlier, so I want to emphasize the 25 years later stories were also in service of getting full body shots of the suddenly bizzarely hourglass female characters in flimsy nightgowns and full leather catsuits. The whole thing was like a glimpse at some sort of perverse meld of this children 6-12 video game comic, transitioning into the nightmarish future IP Penders really wanted to make:

Veotax posted:Also, assuming this is genuine, Tangle and Whisper might be making the jump to an official Sonic game! I am very close to 100% upgrading all the characters in this lovely free to play mobile game, so I for one am looking forward to it

Saoshyant posted:So, is that mobile game any good? There are three sonic dash games at this point: Sonic Dash is the original, a very straightforward three lane endless runner that's got a bunch of characters and ~4 concurrent progression systems, but is very fair and even- you will not feel much pressure to pay anything if you don't want to. Unlockable areas are mostly cosmetic, and almost all unlockable characters have only negligible stat differences; Big the Cat's shields last a bit longer than Metal Sonic, but Metal's magnet power lasts longer than Big's, etc. Periodic events let you unlock characters for free, and they're actually very doable with a bit of practice. Tangle and Whisper will probably come here eventually; almost all new characters are now introduced in Sonic Forces, then available in Sonic Dash a bit later on. Sonic Dash 2: Boom is a sequel set in the Sonic Boom setting- it stopped getting new content after about six months, leaving the prices and XP curve in a very weird place that was intended to support a much more extensive game. Also a three lane endless runner. This game has a "sprite" system of permanent and one time boosts, and a short list of cycling events that you compete with a leaderboard and with basic goal numbers to win ascending prizes of rings and XP. The challenges and completion prices for things in this game are absurd; leveling up one character or sprite takes 300,000 rings, and, with the hyperoptimized method I've developed that relies on a set of already maxed sprites, I can get 10k rings only on a very good run. Event prizes are similarly trivial for the effort involved. Maxing every character and sprite costs millions of rings; the XP system caps at level 100 and is even more absurdly unbalanced. Tangle and Whisper aren't going to come to this game. Sonic Forces is a multiplayer racing game built off of the endless runner construct. It's absurdly complex and introduces like five additional currencies and levels and special events and leagues and unlocks and boosts and special use items...I've not touched it because it's almost entirely competitive, but my impression is that since it's competitive, there's much more emphasis on pay to progress/win. Tangle and Whisper are being promoted as coming here. Discendo Vox fucked around with this message at 00:38 on Jul 1, 2020 |

I can confirm a weeklong event to unlock Tangle is now running in Sonic Dash 1.

Larryb posted:Also Forces is entirely multiplayer only which kind of sucks. I kind of got bored with the other two after a while but I’m having a surprising amount of fun with the original Sonic Dash though. There are several characters and outfits I've seen ads for in forces that I'm hoping for in Dash- Tikal, Chaos, red silk dress Blaze...gotta max em all. I'm also still grinding at Dash 2. gotta max out five more characters and ten more sprites, a combined total of about five million rings...

Agent Rush posted:Same here, Lantern Blaze looks so pretty... Completionism hits hard. Speaking of which, I was in the process of unlocking "Elite Agent Rouge" and was partway up one upgrade path when all of a sudden the next upgrade cost 84,600 rings. For comparison, the most any other upgrade has ever cost, at the very end of a path, is 20k.

Larryb posted:Out of curiosity, is there any actual difference between the various characters in Sonic Dash aside from appearance and animal bonuses? Upgrades max out at different tiers, which can have substantial effects (Metal Sonic is great for grinding rings because you wind up with almost constant magnet). Anecdotally, Big seems to eat inputs on the between zone QTE. Otherwise no, no other differences.

Agent Rush posted:Also for anyone who got the Elite Agent Rouge bug in her leveling, it's apparently only for that one level. The next one after paying the inflated ring cost is the normal progression. It happened because there’s an extra 4 in the value...meaning yes, they are actually manually entered for every character.

Agent Rush posted:They did just do Vampire Shadow and Witch Rouge for Sonic Dash, hopefully they finish the Halloween trio. They gave Vamp Shadow and Witch Rouge last year, and they've gone on to other old characters, so I'm not hopeful. Larryb posted:Also out of curiosity, the most recent update to Sonic Dash has a note saying to keep an eye out for the return of an old legend. Any idea what thats referring to? Not sure, but the rest of the update was a duplicate of an old one, so I'm not sure it's accurate. In practice the update added a link to Sega's social media accounts.
