He had about 6 months left on his suspension when he declared himself retired. So he'd still have to ride that out, although there was a rumor that he secretly re-entered the testing pool in preparation to fight Jon Jones at the end of 2017 but then Jones did what Jones does so who knows if that actually happened or not.

Looks like he and his agent had this planned then. If he unretires (he'd want to retire to get rid of the testing pool hassle), then he'd have to be sidelined for 6 months anyway, so it made no sense to serve out the remainder of his 6 month suspension. Once he had 6 months or less left, then it was time to retire if the plan was to leave open the option to come back someday with 6 months notice.

UFC: Nah, we'll pass

It feels like they kind of need to come down hard on him here or risk losing control of their promotion.

If this was in Nevada, his career would be in a lot of loving trouble since this would basically be repeated violent nonsense where people got hurt, but who knows with New York.

As someone else hinted at, we kinda need the regulators to step in for this one because its not as much of a punishment if Conor can just simply fight for Bellator.

If he's having trouble with the cut, then the UFC and New York should just sanction the fight at a catchweight. Everyone will understand.

possbly yeah, or in the sauna or in a bath or whatever he needs to do. i'm assuming nyc adopted the early morning weigh-ins, so chiesa was fewer than 24 hours out from stepping on the scales. the most drastic parts of the weight cut happen in the last few hours since that's when you can almost kill yourself from dehydration.

Yeah, the evening before the weigh in is showtime if you have a big cut. Usually if you are doing it smart and healthy (or as healthy as possible anyway), you want to get down to a few pounds from the target the night before, go to bed, then make the final cut the morning of weigh ins after your body has had a chance to recover a bit from the stress.

If Chiesa's ahead of schedule then he'll be fine, but if he was cutting it close, then he might end up with a lot of weight left to cut tomorrow morning.

In addition to losing cut time, the medical facility may have also potentially tried to give him an IV, which is kind of counter intuitive to the dehydration plan.

I'm going to assume that they didn't give him an IV, because if they did, then he has no chance in hell of making weight and should just stop his cut now.

Do you guys really think he wont fight again? Jones hit and ran a pregnant lady and fought again, that has to be at least as bad.

This is a hell of a lot worse. It might not be worse in terms of what level of felony or potential punishment, but it is significantly worse in two very important ways. First, there was no real malice in most of Jon Jones' fuckups, in all times for the most part he meant no harm but was making bad decisions that may have eventually put people in danger. We can forgive that.

Secondly, Jon Jones is easy to like even when he's a little bit of a jerk to some of his opponents, but Conor is quickly turning into an unlikable rear end in a top hat, and its a really bad look to charge in with his own personal loving gang. This isn't like a "heel" which you can sell, a lot of people who otherwise may have been potential fans are simply not going to be interested in watching him fight anymore, and its bad enough to potentially do damage to the UFC brand.

Was Jones punished by the athletic commission when he drove into the pregnant woman and ran away? I feel like Conor should be suspended from the sport but this poo poo happened pretty far from field of play

He is directly responsible for the cancellation of 3 NYC fights (2 if you dont want to count Lobov) after rounding up a gang and leading them on a riot against a bus full of fighters.

This is a hell of a lot worse than anything Jon Jones ever did.

From a quick lookup of NY laws, the possible charge is either 2nd degree assault (3-7 years prison), or 3rd degree assault (0-1 year jail). Its not clear to me which type of assault Conor's case falls under.

Rigel
Nov 11, 2016

If 2nd degree assault requires intent to cause serious injury, then that might be tricky. NY might be going with plan B though: bury him under a pile of charges. This isn't one charge of assault, throwing that dolly/hand truck/whatever alone is directly responsible for 3 separate assault charges that we know of, and who knows what else he and his crew may have done.

Rigel
Nov 11, 2016

TMZ is reporting 2 charges for misdemeanor assault (so the 3rd degree), and a charge of felony criminal mischief. the vandalism charge got upgraded to a felony because he caused over $8,000 of damage, and the maximum penalty is 7 years.

They've done it before when one person's going to miss weight and that kind of makes sense if they're wanting to take some of their opponent's purse on a technical level, but when you've already straight up scrapped the fight, lol, what's the point.

Its not new, they've made lots of guys cut weight to get their show money. Often the UFC decides not to pay the show money because they plan to reschedule the fight quickly, like in a month or two in which case you can sleep in and not show up to the scale. But, if the UFC decides to pay you for your show money for a cancelled fight, then they are going to make you earn it on the scale under the theory that if you dont make weight, you weren't going to "show" anyway.

When have they made someone weigh in for a fight that was straight up scrapped and not for weight reasons, though?

From a quick search, they made Tim Kennedy cut weight at UFC 205 to earn his show money even though his fight was cancelled on a Tuesday. This isn't a weird one-off, maybe it hasn't happened recently, but I remember guys showing up to a scale that everyone knew his opponent wouldn't step on to earn show money.

The question now is will Pettis get an extra 2 hours if he misses weight. New York policy is that for championship fights you can get another 2 hours to make weight, but no one is sure if that rule applies to championship fights that are literally scheduled during the weigh in.

FS1 is scheduled to show some silly poo poo called Monster Energy Supercross during the PPV. Are they contractually required to show that, or can they toss that for free UFC? I am going to just presume that Khabib agreed to fight Pettis for the chance to be the lightweight champion, which would then enable him to make a lot more money, attract endorsement offers, and possibly be able to demand that he defend his belt someday soon in russia.

The UFC should have let Max fight at a catchweight from the moment the fight was announced.

Khabib vs Holloway didn't need to be a title fight and they could have just stripped Conor and gave it the Khabib if he'd won a catchweight besides, not like the belts really matter and they're pretty desperate for Khabib to have it.

We just lost a sick fight for kinda no reason.

Except that belts do matter. Champions get paid more and have more leverage on their next opponent and date. Khabib is not going to agree to a non-title fight.
