We're talking narrative fiction in a thread about a work of narrative fiction. We are not rearchitecting the whole of literature. You should read Dubliners. Not only because it's fantastic, but because the techniques he uses to show the nuances of life in early-20th century Ireland could actually be useful for creating a story in a world like the one this thread is attempting to portray. It's easier to understand a setting and, yes, identify with characters, when there's a sense of tangible detail, especially if it's a setting less immediately imaginable than 1900s Dublin.
