Camera 7: Main Promenade
“But seriously, how can you work for someone like that? I’ve seen Neph with warmer personalities. Hand me that integrator, wouldya?”
“Hereya. And Cap isn’t that bad, she’s just… sensitive. Its like, when you hit a patch of genetic memories from the War or the Dark Times and it throws you a wobbleya? Cap isn’t a Kaltoran but she’s old enough to remember the War, and it left its mark. So she occasionally gets a little...”
“Assholishya? Cross your ears!”

Jadzi’s response is drowned out by the station’s Datastream coming back online. Holovid windows pop open every few feet, advertising all sorts of Corporate wares and services. A ragged cheer goes up among a group of newly-arrived Corporates as the casino awakens.

“Heyya, there we go! Soooo, question: where the hell is everyone else. I like helping out, but this station is wayyy too big for just you and the bossdude. Even with the drones.”
*shrugs*”There used to be a bunch more Corps. Cline had a falling out with his domesticated partner, I think that’s what they call their spouses. Anyway, they had a big fight and she frigged off down to Bastion to set up shop, and took the rest with her. Personally, I think Mishpacha’s cursed, so I’m fine hanging out up here.

***
Camera 11: Bio-Drone Maintenance

*gross squishing noises*
“Hmmmm, now if I was retracted secondary motive array, where would I hide? Ah, there you are!” *more squishing noises* “There! All done! Although….” *chirp*”Captain?”
”Yes Kruze? Everything going well?”
“Quite well, I have been able to return 80% of the Flesh bio-drones to operational status. It has occured to me though, that I could repair an additional 10% of the bio-drones if I were to use parts from the captured pirates.”
“..... I’m going to have to say no to that one Kruze. The pirates are worth more in bounties, and I’m pretty sure using non-standard parts would void the drones’ warranties.”

***
Camera 2: Control

[pleasant voice]“You are locked down and safe Future’s Hope, the refueling drone will be with you shortly. Welcome to Bastion High, please be sure to visit the shopping kiosks in t-”*de-oop* [normal voice]“.... Oh, well gently caress you too!”
“Language Cody. They probably thought you were a recording. At least you aren’t out here manually aligning sensor arrays. Speaking of, how’s the picture in there?”
“Ahhh, its a drat sight better than it was. Still some shadows, but I think that’s the best we’ll get without a full refit. Whi- loving MEYNARD YOU PIECE OF TURD!
“First, language. Second, is Meynard there threatening you? Please give me your safe-code Specialist Johns.”
“Capitalism Rules. No the wonder twins just got the DataStream back online, and I’m seeing that the Kaltoran ship that just docked is here to scout for settlements. And it looks like a Corporate-backed expedition came through last week. Which means my data broker Meynard totally overcharged me for his so-called ‘exclusive info’ on the new colony rules. Looks like we’ve got competition.”
“Ah, an opsec breach. I’m sure Captain TenSixth will happily let me break this Meynard’s legs for this infraction.”
“loving-A Granny.”

***
Well, good news and bad news. Goes with the territory I guess. At least the new backdoors I’ve installed into the station’s systems seem to be working fine, I was able to surf the station cameras without a single peep from security. But now Stationmaster Cline is speaking to me, so I flow back into my body. He’s cleaned himself up a fair bit in the last few hours, but his suit is still rumpled and hair unkempt. Maybe its possible for Corporates to button down after all. He indicates the large boxy case that he brought to my table in the ‘Executive Mess’.
“The Breakly’s Consumer Goods ship that passed through dropped a promotional copy off, its their new BoxShop™ concept. Looks like a chunk of the database got corrupted in the attack, but the nanofab is operational and its still got a few useful templates. Its the least I can give you for helping us out like this.”

He makes himself a drink, and offers you on with a confused smile. You accept the glass.

“Thank you. I have a sampling port with a decent sensor suite, I find it useful occasionally. Your comm said you had a proposition for us?”
“Ah, yes. A bit of infrastructure work. Not too flashy, but I think it’ll definitely pay dividends in the coming days. I’m not sure if you’re aware, but the comms situation on Mishpacha is pretty much poo poo. None of the old satellite system survived the War, and orbital space is full of debris. Now Bastion High can cover most of the continent of Star due to its position. But outside of our umbrella, you’re pretty much deaf and mute unless you have a ship above you. I’ve got my hands on a few comms satellites that should work, two for geosync along with Bastion High and two with stationkeeping drives that we can put above the poles. It’ll be a little patchy, but it’ll theoretically cover the whole planet. I just need someone with a ship and the know-how to clear out some of the debris.”

***
The Jenni

Due to Granny’s sheer bulk and Kruze’s length, the cargo hold is the only place on The Jenni that you can have an all-hands meeting. Its a bit more difficult now that half the hold is full of your equipment, but everyone finds a comfy spot. You listen to their status reports like its new information, and tell them of Cline’s proposal. Jadzi immediately goes to work on her tablet, holographic equations spilling into the air.

“Yeah, we can totally do thisya. I can rejigger the Electro-Gravity emitters to project a weaker but wider field. Basically just plow spots clear for the commsats. Shouldn’t take more than a week, and maybe there’s some cool stuff in the debris field.”
“Eh, that would put us even further behind the the other two expeditions. I say we find some locals with a shuttle and let them do the heavy lifting. The commnet still gets set up, but we get to start surveying.”

====
Bastion High is operational again, and you gain 2 Influence.

Decision 1: Cline’s Proposal
A: Nope!
We’re too busy, he can find someone else.
B: Subcontracting
Find a local crew to do the grunt work. The commnet work proceeds, but no Influence for us.
C: Let’s Do This!
Do the work yourself (can gain Influence)

Decision 2: The BoxShop™
The BoxShop™ will construct a Workshop onboard The Jenni. Workshops take up 1 Cargo space (we have 3 left), and gives narrative and mechanical bonuses to the skill they are assigned.
A: Medbay
You will have access to more involved medical treatments and gain a bonus to healing
B: Surveyor’s Workshop
A place to help process and store the planetary data needed to find a good settlement local.
C: Command Hub
Databases and commsets dedicated to keeping you in touch with your subordinates and allies.
D: Hack It
Try and restore full functionality to the device, increasing your options. (This can fail, and let me know what kind of workshop you’d like)
E: Store It
This might be more useful in the future, either in our settlement or as a trade item. Pack it away in the hold, it doesn’t take up much space.

Get all the Influence we can, and keep the workshop-in-a-box as our wildcard. Might end up being critical planetside, and if we suddenly find a pressing need for one of the workshops we can just set it up then.

While attempting to restore full functionality could pay off greatly, I agree with Cryo, let's keep it in storage for now. Maybe later we can acquire an uncorrupted database, or trade it for an influence bump. We can revisit the possibility of deploying it shipboard later too.

More influence is good, and those satellites could be useful.

We want to make sure our landing spot for the first base is as good as possible, let's get that survey system up and running ASAP, as useful as it could be to keep the workshop for later.

Oh, thoroughly compromise the commsats while we're gonna be sitting around with them in the cargo holds for a week anyways. Never hurts to be able to listen in on or even cut your enemies out of the network.

Yes I'm aware my suggestions are apparently always "break into the nearest computer system and make us some back doors" but it's useful, damnit.

Yes, that's odds of success. Failure would mean killing the unit or maybe producing a random workshop, not grey goo. 'Nanofab' is a marketing term, its basically a fancy 3D printer.

Bastion High is going to be part of the network, so you've already backdoor'd it. Cline is a Corporate after all, he needs to be able to control the network in order to charge for it.

1.B, Subcontract it out while getting a move on because Mishpacha is a deathworld in the 40k sense. I'm worried that if the other prospectors get a sizeable lead on Team Jenni ShitBucket, our crew will get straddled with pickings varying from "inimical to posthuman life, little profit" to "infested with giant feral neph beasts, less profit than the last one" if they get left behind during the setup phase.

2. A, a Medbay. Because Mishpacha is a deathworld in the 40k sense.

Until we've got enough set up that projects can be continued while we're away, it's not worth delaying out setup for any reason.

Supplementary Vote 1: Backstory

It has been discovered that you have a shadowed past, concerning the Great War. We’re going to define it, but a little history first.

The Archons were completely uninterested in the arts of war, so they were unprepared when X’ion returned with its Nephilim army and vengeance in its heart. First they armed their child-species: the Kaltoran, the Ursai, the Twillager, and more. This failed against the horde. Then the Archons created the Legion, master-crafted to prosecute the war in all its forms. This too failed to push back the Nephilim advances.

In desperation, the Archons dusted off the long-neglected robotics technologies of their Human parents. Great metallic war-machines of all shapes and sizes were constructed, and then armed with the most devastating weapons the Archons had dared research. To operate these ‘Mechanoids’, the Archons repurposed AIs discovered in an ancient Human archive.

This worked. The Mechanoid army fought the Nephilim to a stand-still, and even began to push back in some sectors. But then, across the entire galaxy, the Mechanoids turned. They attacked any form of biological life, regardless of side. For you see, the Archons had made a grave error.

That archive did not house ancient AIs, it was a node of the vast Palantor Network. Hundreds of thousands of the stored Human consciousness (including yours) had been ripped out of their digital paradise and cut down to fit the limited robotic forms. This was too much and most descended into a homicidal rage, dedicated to wiping out all organic life in the galaxy. Some recovered their sanity, becoming the first Palantor. Others were ‘rescued’ by later Palantor salvage teams and rehabilitated.

S1: You were...
A: an Orphan. You were ripped out of the Network and reconfigured by the Archons, but the War ended before you could be placed into a warform.
B: a Disciple. A Mechanoid footsoldier, but still powerful enough to tear through entire squads of organic enemies.
C: a Prophet. A combination of heavy-weapons platform and general, you controlled the ebb and flow of any battlefield you fought in.
D: a Harbinger. You were a Mechanoid spacecraft, full of fighters and drop-pods and horrible weapons. Worlds burned where you walked.

S2: You escaped by...
A: My own design
Your sanity returned on its own, and you were able to exfiltrate yourself from the Mechanoid network.
B: Some help from ‘friends’
Your physical form was discovered by Palantor scouts, and they took you in for rehabilitation. It was not a pleasant process.

Please use the S1/S2/Supplementary designation for this vote, I don’t want it to get mixed in with the main update votes.

Crystals?
Mishpachan Orbit
Mishpacha’s really quite beautiful from space. Star’s green jungles, Orphan’s multicolored ice flows, Spur’s purple fungal blooms. Granted, most of those things would kill you if you were actually there, but its nice from a distance. The start-up code for the last of the satellites flashes in the corner of your vision as you float in the void, only a few more minutes before its online. Generally you let Jadzi or Cody handle the technical stuff, but Jadzi is currently babying the reactor core and Cody has locked herself in her room to perform ‘damage control’. And unlike the others, you only need an insulated suit to be comfortable in the vacuum of space. Suddenly, you’re not alone.
“God that’s an awesome view. When’s the last time you saw something like that?”
“Teagan’s World. 274-h had just finished sterilizing the southern hemisphere when it was needed in deep space. Hello Jenni, its been a while.”
“Now what have we said about dissociating like that? You sterilized Teagan’s World. You were the Harbinger 274-h. And you crawled up out of that darkness, and are trying to make amends. In your own strange, very cranky way.”
scoffs “Amends. You should talk to Ms. Jinx about my amends.
*laughter “Yeah, you probably could have handled that a little nicer. But then again, I don’t think you were ever a super nice person. Even Before. And speaking honestly, Old You would have vented the station’s entire atmosphere at the first sign of trouble. Baby steps.”
“Aren’t you just rainbows and puppies today. Thanks. You should stick around for a bit, meet my ladies-”

But she’s gone, replaced by the hissing of an open comms channel. Faint, but getting louder. Some sort of garbled message, followed by a distress signal. And then you see it, slowly tumbling towards you out of the thinner debris field. A lifepod, scorched and dark.

****
The Jenni, Midships
Kruze taps the hardscreen displaying an external view of the lifepod being slowly maneuvered into position by our docking armatures.
“Definately Legion, that’s the insignia of the 12th Assault Wing. Highly decorated, fought well against the Eden Brood during the War. I was gifted the skull of one of their former commanders when I passed my mentor’s practical exam.”
“... we should talk about your tendency to overshare someday.”

Our conversation is cut off by the sounds of the arms locking down and the airlock cycling. The atmosphere sensors read green, so I popped the seal. Kruze scurries in, medkit strapped to her chest. The pod is large enough for several Legion, so I am able to follow her in. Not that we have to go far, the body of a Legion woman is slumped over the center console. Kruze examines her, but even I can tell the woman is already dead. Not even the legendary Legion physiology could survive that many energy burns. Kruze shakes her head, confirming the diagnosis. She also points out a parcel that’s been placed into the pod’s locked storage bin.
“She was critical when she entered the pod, but she’s practically on top of the emergency kit. Instead she felt it more important to secure that data cache…”

****
The Jenni, Cargo Bay

Hydra’s funerary dirge finishes echoing through the ship as she joins the rest of us. I nod to her solemnly, and motion the holoview to display the woman’s tagID.
“Her name was Second Decanus Brisa Augustus, of The Furious Agrippa. We’ll be returning her remains to a local Auxila office when we make port. But what really concerns us is what was found in the pod. Hydra?”
“Yes sir. The secured parcel was a data transit enclosure, standard Legion issue. However my Auxila authorizations aren’t working which most likely means they were acting under the Operations Branch. Special projects, covert ops, the like. We might be able to access it through… back-channels, but I would recommend sending along unopened. Operations Branch can be a bit… territorial, especially with non-Legion.”

She flicks a vid onto the holoview, an explosion frozen onscreen.
“Additionally, it seems the Second Decanus was the ship’s scribe, the officer charged with keeping the official log. She had her personal recorder active when The Furious Agrippa met its fate.”

Hydra activates the vid and the explosion finishes, rocking the point of view. It steadies and swings around, framing a ship’s bridge of Legion design. A handful of Legion work their stations, their helmets and suit lights indicating the ship has already lost pressure. An officer, possible the ship’s commander by his rank bars thrusts a familiar parcel at the viewpoint and gestures back.

Suddenly, the video is swapped by a light powerful enough to be painful even in holo-form. The camera compensates, and you can see again. A beam of light is passing out of the far side of the bridge, and the entire structure separates and floats off. The view turns and stumbles through a doorway, slowly making their way through the ship. Several times there are more flashes of light, and the view re-routes away from newly cut free ship sections. Eventually the view makes it to the lifepod, and locks away the parcel.
“Her suit registered her death a few minutes later. It and she both sustained massive radiation and thermal damage. I am not familiar with the anti-ship weapon used, and it isn’t listed in the Auxila archives. It closest resembles a cutting laser, but the energy and focusing requirements are beyond even Legion battleships.”

The rest of the crew voices their ignorance on the weapon, but you stay silent. For while neither the Palantor or Mechanoids field a weapon like that, you know that Humanity was capable of feats undreamed of by their ‘grandchildren’. Such as perfectly-efficient matter/energy conversion. Your musing is interrupted by Cody’s sounds of annoyance.
“Hayek’s Balls Granny. I thought I had big news, but it seems a bit of a let-down after that… that.”

I indicate that she should continue, we need to get a handle on the actual colonization part of our plan. She nods and flicks a map of Mishpacha onto the holo. Two points on the continent of Star and one point each on the continents Spur and Orphan light up.
“So. You all know that I was able to glean a few sites to check out when we got here from my sources. But now we have competition, which changes things. Firstly, the Breakly’s Consumer Goods group landed in Bastion a few weeks ago and haven’t left. They’ve spent most of their time filming holovids and locking down all the local cartographers with exclusive non-competes. However...”

She smiles her Smug Smile #3 before continuing.
“It seems that the production assistant has gotten himself in a bit of a bind with a local Draz cartel. I squeezed him a bit, and if we’re able to make these problems go away he’ll give us a copy of their data. Said something about rivals making for better drama. Now the Kaltorans, they were here to expand the settlement of New New Eden. Problem is, no-one can seem to find it. Looks like the jungle swallowed it up without a trace. So they’ve spent the last week shooting probes down, either trying to find New New Eden or a fresh site. I tried to work them, but they just kept hanging up on me. Rude.”
“They probably thought you were a recording…”

====
So, we have successfully established a basic planetary telecom network: 2 Influence. We are also storing the BoxShop™ for later use. The results of the Supplementary Vote means that we are Good At ZeroG/Vacuum Operations, and that Jenni has a more friendly relationship with us.

Decision 1: Secret Legion Data
A: Pass It Along Unopened
Its not our business and/or its not worth angering the Operations Branch
B: Hack It, Then Pass It Along
Hey, at least they get a copy eventually. What’s the worst that could happen?
C: Data? What Data?
Hack the data and keep it for yourself. What the Operations Branch doesn’t know can’t hurt you.

Decision 2: Locations to Start Scouting
A: Get The Corporate Data
Help the PA deal with his angry suppliers and he’ll totally hook you up. With data
B: Sweet-talk The Kaltorans
Have someone who’s not a smug Corp try and negotiate with the Kaltorans
C: Ruined City on Star
This ancient Kaltoran city hasn’t been completely overrun by the jungle. This site has more salvage opportunity and more jungle danger.
D: Coastal Mountains of Star
A spur of mountains shelters several coastal valleys. This site has more minerals opportunity and more Feral Nephilim danger.
E: Interior Iceplains of Orphan
The glaciers of northern Mischpacha contain large seams of volatile chemicals. This site has more fuel/chemical opportunity and more environmental danger.
F: Fungal Highlands of Spur
The higher elevations on Spur are not completely overrun with fungus, making research and extraction less dangerous. This site has more bio-tech/medicine opportunity and more environmental danger
G: Do New Scans
Who knows if our old data is accurate or that our competitors will deal us square. Spend time doing new scans of the planet.
