Rangers have never had a first overall, right? I don't think Calgary, Dallas, Arizona, or Vancouver have either.

I think everyone else in the lottery has done it before.

I agree that the owner is making a hilarious mess of things I'm just saying Peters did miss 4 years in a row and that's enough/should be enough to get any coach fired.

Nothing really, but he didn't necessarily do anything right either. The team is just average.

His biggest fuckups are probably the Parise and Suter contracts that take them until they're like 40 years old, although Suter is still a good player at least and probably won't drop off for another 2-3 years.

I really badly wanted either of them when they were UFAs. Shero offered for both but the Pens kinda dodged a bullet there although Parise/Crosby would have been fun for a few years at least. Parise in his prime would have been the absolute perfect winger to Crosby. They skate/play similarly. It's actually kinda scary. He looks like a Crosby brother or some poo poo.

Congrats Caps fans. It was a long time coming.

Pens ran out of gas and had some injuries. The rest will be good for them. For off season moves...I dunno. The roster when healthy is still pretty good. I'd consider moving Letang for a less mistake prone top 4 dman and especially if they could get some young assets/cap space out of it but there's also an argument for keeping him. Mistake prone or not he still drove possession better than any other Pens d.

Don't think all the things he brings are easily replaced though, so it'd have to be a ransom if they did move him.

I guess a defenseman but I don't know why they'd want to trade him. He just scored 90 points, he's got an excellent cap hit, and they've got him for a few more years.

Maybe Mike Sullivan hates him like every other coach has, but that hasn't gotten in the way of them winning two cups with him and him being a very productive player.

Kessel is super important for the powerplay and I could see it struggling without him. Despite having Crosby/Malkin Phil is actually the quarterback. Sid plays more down low and Malkin is often a triggerman.

The PP can be good without him. It was in the past. But it has been best in the league and awesome in the playofs with him and I'd hate to lose that.

But I guess we're gonna trade him because Sullivan like every other coach can't stand him. Dumb. At least we won two cups before GMJR decided to panic and overreact. Or maybe it's all bullshit. Oy vey. But Friedman confirmed it so there's something there.

My takeaway is that the Penguins are attempting to sell high on Kessel - his production is great, but his underlying numbers are worrisome and he's getting to the age where a lot of players drop off offensively.

I just don't like it unless the return is overwhelming. They're going to be the Canucks in a few years anyways, might as well try and win Cups now instead of worrying about what type of player Kessel will be near the end of his contract.

Unless they do something whacky like trade Kessel and sign Tavares or Carlson with the cap space. I guess that would make them better. Seems unlikely though.

I dunno. I'd guess a "good" return would be a top 4 defenseman who doesn't carry an obscene cap hit, and maybe a top 9 LW. High ask though.

Sometimes it's as much dumb luck as anything. Scouting goaltenders is really goddamn hard to do because it's all the tougher to tell how their success in juniors/minors will translate to the NHL, if it will at all.

Ron Hextall stocked up hard on goalie prospects in what's basically a "law of averages" approach. Carter Hart's as close to a sure thing that the Flyers have had in ages, but even then it's still a roll of the dice as to how he'll perform in the big league. It's kind of funny because he almost took so many as to create a logjam, but then Stolarz's knee went out again. It created a problem in that Stolarz was pretty well set to be the Next Big Thing, which potentially left a gap between the Elliot/Neuvy tandem and whoever would be next up (likely Lyon), then Hart became a huge revelation in the WHL.

Coaching is another story though. There was understandably a lot of laughing at the Flyers taking Steve Mason from the Jackets, but Jeff Reese completely reinvented him, and he wound up having a banner year in 14-15. Reese leaving the team for reasons still unknown seemed to piss him off, and Mason was later sent to Winnipeg. Similarly, Reese did a lot to help Bobrovsky get refined and up to speed in his early years.

Matt Murray had like an 894 save percentage in his draft year, then 920+ from then on out until this year.

Goalies are voodoo.
