Spoony signal-boosted Brad’s show back when it was completely unknown by reposting it on his own site. I’m not sure where exactly in the timeline this is, though. It may be that Spoony got introduced to CA through Brad rather than the other way round which I had always assumed.

i meant this at the people saying they were surprised at him siding with doug when he collaborated more with the ctc people. Like if someone says or does horrible things in their videos it’s of course you can judge them for that, i just meant that you shouldn’t assume that you know someone because you’re familiar with their videos

I don't think there is anything wrong with Elvira and I think she's being used as the really cool end of the spectrum, and Joe Bob is a big old racist rear end in a top hat.

Elvira's cool but Joe Bob wrote for a nazi magazine (Taki's magazine) for years and doubled down on twitter when people said that was bad. Although apparently his cohost from his new Shudder show spent a long time explaining things to him and he genuinely didn't understand that Taki Theodoracopulos is literally a national socialist fascist and he did apologize after that (I did not see these tweets). So if he's willing to learn and grow, he's still better than 85% of boomers.

Oh, okay. I've only ever heard him and his shows mentioned in reference in videos talking about horror films. Outside of that, I didn't know what else he had done.

It's almost the plot of a niche japanese cartoon, of seeing elders and veterans being bested by people almost half as old as said videogame.

Speaking of niche: Here's a 20 minute video on how Disney Theme Parks translate bare chested characters into on the site performers.

And I was somewhat busy with other matters to pop by on this thread when the Internet Archive stuff exploded, but here's a good example of a video that wouldn't be possible without it: Whang talks about The Icy Hot Stuntaz!

You probably have seen a certain map floating around these days from CHAZ/CHOP that details its progress almost like a parody of Brown Moses Syrian coverage maps + mid 2000's RTSes, that got featured on several places, including Tucker's program and the big moist boy's twitter feed. Well, the person behind that map went on Film Critters!

It's trash writing, but it's about what I would expect for a Star Wars book. At least there's no attempted jokes in this passage. Someone in the Twitter thread said "It reads like a DM description of a scene in a tabletop session before asking to roll dice." which sounds about right.

wendig seems to have the superpower to use exactly the wrong simile for any given thing. 'unzipping' is a word that implies revealing something, but lasers are just, yknow, shooting. back of your teeth, instead of just 'he can feel his teeth rattling' or whatever.

The big reason IMO that passage just loving deflects my eyeballs away from it at mach 2 is like... the tense? The prose is pretty boring but every time I see a verb I am immediately thrown out of the image. The last couple of sentences are a great example of that: the tenses seem theoretically consistent, but the way the last sentence starts is incredibly disorienting. I think this is because the operative verb in the previous sentence was not related to the act of curling up into a ball ("forming a cannonball"), but the jump ("jumps into the air"), and because that sentence started with "then," meaning that past tense would probably feel more natural than sticking with present.

I think I get what he's trying to do with this, though it's a terrible idea and he's executing it terribly.

Basically it's a fast-paced scene with a lot of action and danger, so he's trying to rush through things while using his word choices to disorient the reader. It's the literary version of an inept filmmaker using lots of fast, jarring cuts and strobe lights during a fight scene to try and evoke the tension of being in a fight.

Re-reading it, I realize now that it's all meant to be present tense (active voice?), and I wonder now if the whole book is like that. The only other book I know of that does present tense all-throughout is Know No Fear by Dan Abnett, but in that book, there was a reason for doing it in that style, and it was far better executed.

I can imagine a better version of this same idea would probably emphasize a connection to a specific character's disorientation and confusion in this moment to tether the audience's awareness to their own, not just try to present a rapid, nonsensical flow of events.
