Same, I knew about a nebulous "lootboxes are bad" since I played TF2 back in the day, and I just assumed everyone copied that garbage. I didn't realize they were using casino-like skinnerbox poo poo to scalp children out of money. Disgusting.

To give TF2 and to a lesser extent Dota a bit of credit they at least let you "cash out" by selling your stuff for new games. Dota still pulls lootboxes, battle passes (I think they actually invented it), and one-time offer/fomo stuff - and in recent years they've even limited trading of items - so Valve is hardly clean, but being able to bypass a lot of the bullshit with the steam marketplace is at least something.

Ehhhhhh it’s dumb but unless I missed something it sounds like relative chump change that the IRS isn’t going to be homing in on. Which is kind of his point.

Again, very stupid, especially since it is something a particularly unhinged person could use against you, but he’s lucky enough that it’s small potatoes stuff. So sadly I wouldn’t anticipate a Boogie Tax Fraud Trial.

I'm admittedly willing to give TF2 more of a pass than I should because I know largely how the trading scene works so getting weapons and items isn't that complicated in reality. A single 2.50$ key is enough to give you enough metal to buy basically every weapon in the game and it's only on reskinned promotional ones that you'll hit snags on. And buying something bumps you from free-to-play to Premium anyway.

Still, I'm pretty sure they stopped letting cosmetics drop randomly anyway so gently caress em regardless of the marketplace fluctuating (Since they're not in control of that anyway).

in all likelihood yes, i was merely pointing out that something being very minor does not at all preclude the irs from nailing your rear end to the wall anyway, especially if you're poor and/or not white. of course boogie is neither of those things so he will likely be just fine.

doesn't the ability to cash out into store credit make it more gambling-like and insidious, not less?

I suppose it does make it more like literal gambling. It does let individuals play the odds to try and make money, although the Dota system is that you can't get the same item again until you've gotten every item once so they're actually playing for the chance bonus item. I think most people though buy lootboxes to get that one cosmetic they like, and for those people getting a return on the ones they didn't like is nice. It is insidious in that it enables actual gambling, but the alternative of items having no actual value, most of a crate not even having value to you, and the totally random nature is also quite lovely just in a different way.

You're probably right, though, that it's ultimately worse than Overwatch type boxes. I was thinking more along the Dota market and I don't think very many people are rolling Dota crates to make money. They're rolling CS:GO crates instead because the potential return is much higher.

You link your account to a website, a bot contacts you on steam and you give them the stuff you’re selling, and once it’s confirmed the money is sent to your account.

If you have something common like a key to open crates with you can just put that on the Steam Marketplace and wait for someone to buy it. You can do that with basically anything really.

This is incredibly unsurprising considering Jim Sterling still gets the stalwart defenders of Overwatch pulling the ole "it's just cosmetics!!!" routine. Fortnite managed to sneak in by blowing up right at the same time as multiple games (Battlefront 2, etc.) were getting nailed for lootboxes and other predatory poo poo. Compared to them Fortnite seems downright wholesome.

If you're talking about third party stuff it does break down though thanks to the insane scale of prices for certain items. And those prices only exist because specific cool effect + specific cool hat had a 0.00001% drop chance from a specific crate that doesn't drop anymore.

If you're talking about buying direct from Valve, well, that has the same general problem that Fornite has which is the prices on cosmetics are bonkers. It was always uniquely bizarre in Valve's case because you would often be faced with spending :10bux: on a single hat for a single character or spending that same :10bux: on like, four quality games in a big Steam sale.

yeah it'd drive me nuts because there's nothing worse that someone who's incredibly wrong acting condescending. no bullshit is one of the dumbest ones i listened to (him or that count dankula guy). he had a youtuber called naked ape on and ape just started screaming shut up shut up shut up over and over until destiny had to end the call. then made a video saying destiny was autistic.

That old man has some kind of cognitive impairment. He didn’t seem to understand anything destiny said and just kept repeating his questions without even changing the wording whenever destiny asked a clarifying question (ie “what’s a beta male? I can’t tell you if I am one or not if I don’t know what they are.” “ARE YOU A BETA MALE?”).

I know conservatives are dumb pieces of poo poo, but I can’t believe that self-hating old gomer appears to have a radio show with callers who aren’t just endlessly dunking on him.
