It seems weird to accuse Ms. Ellis of being smug especially in comparison to the RLM guys, who refer to dumb regular movie-goers on a regular basis in Half-in-the-Bag and made a fake podcast to make fun of nerds. I guess "speaking as if one knows that they're talking about" and "direct mockery" can both be smug in different ways?

I finally got around to watching Dan's Fifty Shades video and I really appreciate that he brings up its fanfiction origins beyond the "lol fanfiction" that most do. I find fanart as a medium strangely fascinating, but there seems to be little critical discussion about it outside maybe as a vehicle for female power fantasy. But from the start, as Dan mentions, it had a huge social component not just among fans but between fans and the authors because the authors themselves are also "just fans" of the original work. Then you get things like AUs that might be used by multiple people and it's an interesting source of communal storytelling. And drama, of course, but that's just people. So.. Thanks (unironically) for making me think about fanart, Dan!

One thing I noticed is it seems like the majority of the "subjects" (or, the more famous end of the parasocial relationship) the covers were male. I'm hesitant to read much into it because it could just be the pool she was pulling from (LPers) is male-heavy. I just noticed it because the non-internet examples I tend to hear about are usually female news anchors getting stalkers. I'm really excited for her next video already!

Who the gently caress even cares that someone's wearing a hat in the first place, much less why?! "Why are you wearing this specific article of clothing, remove it for me" is such a weirdly invasive thing to ask even as a friend. The video she linked is aggressively uncomfortable

AriadneThread posted:it's a new lindsey ellis video about the slow and painful grinding of souls into profit Man, the part about the cake channel including producer interaction freaked me out because I had just noticed a similar thing in two separate nail art/education channels. I don't even know if they were temporally related, I just noticed that if I watched older videos on either channel, it was just the host and maybe a silent model, but at some point the cameraman just... becomes a character, I guess. Not gonna lie, I've always had a fairly negative reaction to "Calls to Action" in videos, though I knew it was probably unfair and I couldn't really articulate why. Like, intellectually I know it's the exact same thing as the fast food guy asking me if I want to add a cookie for a dollar, I have no obligation to buy to cookie or smash that like button, and I don't hold it against the fast food guy, so what's the difference? I think this and other videos like StrucciMovies's on parasocial relationships made me realize it probably is that transition from a Person to a Brand/Personality giving me some, I dunno, dissonance. Ordering fast food is a ritualized process, I ask for a thing a certain way, they ask me certain questions, and then they give me thing in exchange for my money. I'm either in my car at the specialized building or inside the specialized building. But with a video, I could be laying in my bed and with most of these more YouTube Personality videos there isn't nearly as scripted a quality to them, so when the Call to Action comes along, it feels weirdly invasive. Like, dude, you invited me into your house to have a chat and now you want to sell me a thing? wait oh my god youtube is a giant tupperware party

I don't know why this bothered me so much, but women in LA Noire all looked terrible to me. They just overlayed the hair texture on the head, so every single woman looks like she has a hideously deformed skull. With the men it wasn't noticeable because they all had short hair and wore fedoras. Why not give the ladies hats?

Mr.Radar posted:Jim Sterling's recent video about how "game news" websites are increasingly about pop culture in general more than they are about games caused Linkara to make a Twitter thread about Channel Awesome's failed "Awesome Comics" web series (circa 2016) and how that suffered from the same issue to an insane degree: I like that Jim pointed out that YouTube kind of has the opposite problem -- it's a platform of niches. I've seen a lot of content creators, particularly Let's Players and the like, start expressing burnout with doing the same thing over and over, and wishing they could branch out or do something more creative. But how do you convince people to watch your first attempts at something when they could watch dozens of other people who've already refined it, the same way you've refined your own niche? I wonder if it's the same kind of existential crisis I had just before I left my last job and found a better one
