If we are comparing video games to existing artistic mediums, I think installation art is the best fit. Video games are interactive digital installations that you explore and derive meaning from, and the subtler environmental storytelling tends to be a lot more interesting than the surface level narratives. Game designers should be studying installation artists, not movie directors. Also, Emily Short made this great list of things you must know about as a game designer, to not be a complete fraud: https://emshort.blog/2018/09/02/an-incomplete-list-of-things-id-need-to-know-in-order-not-to-be-a-complete-impostor/

Babysitter Super Sleuth posted:Hey Pirate Jenny, have you ever read that one loving incredible forums story about George Lucas telling a fan what happened after the end of Return of the Jedi? It's extremely apropos to the Death of the Author discussion, even if it's almost certainly bullshit. I don't know if it's the same thing, but I googled it and came across this article: https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-...s-a8398606.html The Independent posted:According to the interview, the three movies would have centred on something established during the ill received prequels, midi-chlorians. Established during the Phantom Menace, the microscopic life forms were said to live everywhere and within everyone: yet, Anakin had the highest count of midi-chlorians that Qui-Gon Jinn had ever seen.

As far as Anakin knew, she was safe and in the ownership of someone who actually treated her very well while was off training. Why don't they just buy her and free her, though? Surely, the Queen of Naboo can afford to purchase a single slave.

Clerical Terrors posted:The fallacy in Thompson's argument wasn't that media does not influence people, it's that he tended to claim it worked almost like brainwashing, that kids playing violent video games would almost immediately reproduce the violence they saw by virtue of having seen it. This is wrong mostly in how oversimplified and presumptive it is. Watching The Big Bang Theory probably won't make you talk like Sheldon and carry a soundboard with a laugh-track anywhere, but it does lodge ideas in your head. And if those ideas only ever get reinforced and never contradicted they can influence people's reasoning in unnoticed ways. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqxEFNFOVTw Innuendo Studio has a great video about what research has actually shown on this topic. Briefly, media doesn't directly affect your personality, but it does affect people view of the world. Violent media don't make you violent, but they can convince you that violence is more widespread and accepted than it really it is. People react to such ideas in different ways. Violent people may be more likely to resort to violence, because they think people won't care, whereas non-violent people might decide to stay home out of fear of widespread violence. Similarly, sexist media won't turn you sexist, but it might lead you to believe that sexism is more mainstream and accepted than it really is, making you less likely to call out your friends for sexist attitudes.

GTA was best back when they couldn't afford music licenses and had to hire obscure indie musicians to create original pastiche pop hits. Those were amazing and gave the games a lot of character. If I wanted to play actual pop songs while playing the game, I could just do that!
