At the risk of continuing this discussion, what exactly did Contra do that upset people so much? Last I heard, the worst thing she said was "I don't really know much about non-binary issues, and think that addressing non-binary people issues has its own difficulties that trans-acceptance doesn't," which, while maybe poorly worded, isn't exactly a terrible thing to say.

The last few pages were spurred by essentially this exact question, actually. Not meant to be lovely, but I’d read back through.

Making stealth in a fallout game less powerful would be incredibly trivial to do but would that make the game more fun?
It’s not about redesigning it with the express intent of making it “less powerful,” it’s about making it more engaging and more fun. Combat is something Bethesda has a lot of problems with and “I hang back and take potshots while encountering minimal resistance” is not exactly the way I want to experience my 60-odd hours of time in their worlds (though I think a bunch of people pick it because the other options aren’t fun either and stealth is the easiest). Fallout 76 is unbearably boring because it turns out Fallout isn’t really any fun when it focuses on combat and grinding at the expense of nearly everything else.
Something like the Sniper Elite games do a much better job of making you feel like an unseen bringer of destruction. You’re not gonna take those mechanics wholesale, but there’s definitely Bethesda could do to make stealth more engaging.

e: Tiny Tina is one of the most unfunny characters I’ve ever encountered in a video game.

sonic unleashed was an intolerably boring game with some good fast parts sprinkled in. the best two 3d sonic games are also like, reasonably well regarded but not critical darlings or anything. sonic mania hit because people who weren't moved by colors or generations (or gave up on sonic after 06) got the thing they'd (including christian whitehead) been asking sega for: let someone who gives a poo poo make a sonic-rear end sonic game. no dumb gimmicks, no attempts to shoehorn a different genre in, no jank, just... a well-made sonic game.

the reason generations worked so well imo was for the same reasons you listed here regarding mania, and also that it felt like the most obvious evolution of 2d -> 3d sonic the hedgehog. like what they should have been all along, complete with the 'no gimmicks' poo poo.

the most surprising part of generations to me was that i ended up liking the 3d sections more than the 2d sections. but, the 3d in that game, for the most part, played like 2d sonic. it nailed that feel far better than any other 3d sonic ever did.

God, Sonic 4 was just the fuckin worst. I’m with you on Generations mostly. It did have a gimmick, which was bringing “traditional” 2D Sonic into the mix. And tbh, it was kinda uninspired. They made the right choice in not derailing the good 3D bits with something completely foreign to the series otherwise, but it didn’t fit together that well, to me. Didn’t ruin it for me, but I don’t blame anyone who hadn’t cared about Sonic since long before 06 for not thinking Generations was gonna do it for them.

People only decided Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 were bad retroactively after Sonic being bad became a meme. They were critically acclaimed, groundbreaking games on release. Sonic Adventure 1 has amazing controls and absolutely insane level geometry and setpieces for a game that came out in 1998. Nothing at the time really compared to it. You could do crazy tricks by using Sonic's momentum to fling himself onto background objects, and the game rewarded you for it by hiding items in these out-of-reach areas. None of the later 3D Sonic games ever gave you this much freedom of control or constructed their levels to effectively use 3D space.

i dunno, i'd bet half of the people who enjoyed it were kids when they played it now look back on a game that aged incredibly poorly (say, if they maybe bought the 360 rerelease) and think "ah maybe it wasn't that great in the first place."
also at least nowadays, i don't know how anyone can say sonic adventure 1 has amazing controls. sonic is so fuckin' squirrely!

i know this isn’t strictly a counter, but it’s content that still (afaik) involves individuals other than the person on camera that isn’t realistically going to be monetized. it’s not “main” content, it’s bonus commentary where the barrier to entry is still relatively low, which... i don’t necessarily like it but i get it.

There’s a conundrum here: Boogie shouldn’t be brandishing unless he thinks he’s in immediate danger and is ready to shoot (and potentially kill) the person in front of him. If there’s no need to stop an assailant immediately, there’s no need to shoot at all. And him firing a “warning shot” clearly demonstrates he didn’t think he was in immediate danger. Guns shouldn’t be treated as non-lethal deterrents.

Additionally, the idea of a “warning shot” is absurd: as the guy holding the gun, you’re responsible for every single shot you take. A warning shot isn’t aimed; if he’s not conscious of what he’s shooting at, then he’s being wildly irresponsible.
