There are easy, simple, straightforward steps he could have taken, and he has actively taken steps in the opposite direction. He's not being asked to do some weird performative struggle session in a show trial in the gulags or whatever. This is besides the question of whatever the gently caress "breadtube" is or what pedestals people are putting entertaining video essay people on the interwebs on.

There was no controversy to get in front of when Olly made that post, and since then he's only made that quote from Chinatown I think?

The Lindsey Ellis XOXO talk is pretty useful for understanding the logic of why no one is tweeting about it. It details the playbook for handling twitter storms. Once you reach this level, it's harmful to engage the crowd in any way, so just not tweeting is the best thing for everyone.

The only change I dislike is how they altered the Major's motivation in the end. He was always a grandstanding monologue spewing blowhard, but his entire convoluted scheme rendered down to "kill Alucard for shits and giggles" was a much better sentiment than Abridged Major rambling on about how men can only be masculine in conflict and he started world war 3 just to let the Nazis live again. The sheer pettiness of the original OVA/Manga motivation makes the Major's disregard for his own forces more palpable and makes him a better villain. If anything the abridged series motivation contradicts a lot of his comments earlier in the parody series.

I think they boiled it down perfectly with
"Gentlemen, Ve... are Nazis!"
Everything after that was a detraction from elegant perfection.

it is about a group of poor adventurers in a D&D-esque world delving into a seemingly bottomless dungeon and eating the various monsters they come across because they can't afford provisions. it is easily one of my favorite pieces of fiction ever, everything about it is so perfectly done and the characters are fantastic. The humor's great, the artwork is gorgeous, the detailed habitat and biome information for monsters is fascinating, and the cooking recipes for food that doesn't exist makes me hungry every time. The chapters about how to eat Living Armor are probably my favorite.

also here's a thing that will excite dungeon meshi fans and then immediately disappoint them because it's not an anime announcement it's just an advertisement for the manga

I don't know if the manga is actually any good, but Dungeon Meshi really makes me want to create a custom d and d campaign and roguelike based on it. Maybe, I could even read it.

Watched the first episode of Black Lagoon thanks to you dorks. So far so good. Watching it dubbed with subtitles, since I love seeing the difference between them. Netflix subs are pretty ungainly and my guess would be that they are overly literal translations?

Quite like me some Ross Noble. His material is mostly based on going on an increasingly absurd tangent.

Stand-up as a medium had a huge increase in popularity in a last decade that resulted in a huge number of mediocre comedians getting catapulted into a larger stage than they merited to try and meet the demand. Can't blame anyone for thinking they hate stand-up when the majority of it has been quite poor for a while now.

My understanding was that the Western powers started the rehabilitation of the German army's reputation more or less immediately as a political aid to rebuilding efforts in West Germany, to maintain support for providing aid to West Berlin, and to keep them onside if the USSR started a land war. Plus, they had a lot of senior staff on hand thanks to operation paperclip who would have been much less useful if everyone was holding them to account.

Britain and France wanted more German army officers tried for war crimes and in the UK they refused to repatriate all axis prisoners until 1948 because it was using them as free agricultural workers. The French also supported the complete destruction of German industry and even the American occupation forces had dismantled factories and shipped out technical equipment in their zone. The rebuilding of West Germany didn't happen until after the US shifted its policies in the 50s, the Marshall plan loans weren't created until 1948 when the relationship between the Soviet Union and the USA had broken down.

And frankly the relationship between the Soviet Union and western europe never deteriorated as badly as it did with the Americans, and never cut ties or economic or cultural links with it. And anti German sentiments in the UK remained extremely strong, to the point where the UK panicked when it reunified.

Operation paperclip and the Soviet Operation Osoaviakhim were terrible but they had nothing to do with rebuilding the German military, they were about recruiting scientists for their weapons and rocket programs, if anything they weakened German rearmament by taking many specialists.

I think you've misunderstood me. I meant that there was a conscious effort to rehabilitate the reputation of the army, not an effort to get it back online as soon as possible. Likewise, Paperclip clearly had a materially negative effect on Germany itself, but reputation management was critical in order for America to get it's money's worth out of the people it had snatched without too many powerful people asking why von Braun wasn't in prison or executed for crimes against humanity.

1984 is more of an analysys of the innate psychology of an authoritarian state. It's pretty irrelevant that the party was originally a socialist movement, it doesn't influence their current policies in the slightest, which is being the boot stamping on a human face. It's an interesting question why Orwell, a staunch socialist, mentioned the socialism origin in the book, but I guess is that it's mostly a reaction to some of his fellow lefties at the time being tankies.

Animal Farm is a clear cut allegory for the Russian revolution. Probably directed at the tankies in leftist circles as well.

I remember him getting a boatload of abuse (from rascists) after arguing that illegal immigrants should receive the minimum wage as well, but from the angle that it would reduce the incentive to hire illegal immigrants. I think he was just a standard South Park republican back then. It'd be interesting to see how his views have changed, if at all.

There are very few games that really take advantage of the medium and produce a piece that is using the medium cleverly and not just trying to make a movie.

Stanley Parable, Gone Home, Her Story and Passage are four that get it right. I wouldn't call them the best games, but they are the best artistically imo.
