I think I gave up on FF12 for other reasons as well (which I do regret a bit, since it had an interesting setup from what I remember reading about it later on). I think the entire purpose for the spear was to give players who are re-running the game an easy way to power through the early half. There are a few intentional sequence breaks that let you get to it very early.

They should have just called Dark Souls 2 "Dragon Souls" or something and not pretend it has anything to do with Dark Souls aside from copy pasted weapons and bosses. Then Dark Souls 3 would be Dark Souls 2 and would feel more like a sequel in both story and mechanics.

Honestly the only the time the link cable was required to play the game was multiplayer for Chrystal Chronicles and that was mostly because Square Enix was too lazy to program a way for four players to manage their own inventories. Edit: Oh what is this about that Pac-Man game?
